  • Question is, how long will the continent put up with absorbing the fallout of America’s decline that America shifts from itself to them before the political and economic strain is too much? Right now the Russo-Ukrainian war has upped the tolerance, but once that comes to some sort of conclusion, it’s going to become increasingly obvious that Europe is getting the short end of the stick on the deal and that China is offering much better terms.

It all points, imo, to the American downfall as being one of those “gradually and then all at once” scenarios. Eventually the one key support pillar will crack, we probably don’t even know for sure which one it is, and everything quickly snowballs around its collapse.

  • First off, this is absolutely one of those sort of issues where the particulars of how the question was phrased drastically shift the responses. I’m positive if the second question was phrased without the “may not directly consider” language then you’d see a much different response.

Second, this isn’t the sort of thing that would significantly shift the results for or against Dems because it’s just too niche. This isn’t a, will I have a job in six months, can I afford a mortgage, can I afford groceries, what will happen to me if I get significantly sick, kind of issue. This isn’t high on the priorities of those just scraping to get by. There’s not enough voters whose big concern is “will Hayden get just good enough grades/SATs/extracurriculars that he’ll get into the good private school or will he have to settle for, ugh, a state school.”

  • There were plenty of pre-social media sites where horrible people spouted their opinions that were reinforced by the other users. The difference is back then it was confined to whatever particular site they were on. The original sin of social media is that it funneled everyone into the same five websites. People no longer had online communities, they had the faceless expanse of everyone.

Which is why we ended up with phenomenon like “owning the libs” and “everyone who criticizes my worldview is a Russian bot.” Without community, people just latch onto resentment towards people not like them instead of building bonds within their groups.
