I was playing arma the other day, and when I joined some guy on our team was flipping out and just angrily calling everyone the n word. After a few seconds of this my teammates wordlessly formed a firing squad and killed the guy until they got bored, then vote kicked him. I favorited that server, that’s a good server.

Social media was a mistake. As a Millennial who grew up watching the internet be born in the way we know it today and then transform into what it is now I can say with confidence and authority that social media was where it all went wrong for this world.

It gave people the wrong impression that others not only wanted to hear what they had to say but they could be just the worst types of human garbage while they’re spouting their opinions.

There were plenty of pre-social media sites where horrible people spouted their opinions that were reinforced by the other users. The difference is back then it was confined to whatever particular site they were on. The original sin of social media is that it funneled everyone into the same five websites. People no longer had online communities, they had the faceless expanse of everyone.

Which is why we ended up with phenomenon like “owning the libs” and “everyone who criticizes my worldview is a Russian bot.” Without community, people just latch onto resentment towards people not like them instead of building bonds within their groups.

This is also one of the reasons I really like being here and on Lemmygrad. Sure, they aren’t big communities, but they’re nice. I feel like I can get to know my fellow users here, you can’t really do that on most social media, most social media is all about maximising engagement and upvotes.

Yeah I miss forums because of this. Much easier to filter out the shit. Most forums didn’t even have bots all over them because they were too niche to waste time on. Places like actual Stormfront were much easier to patrol because you knew everyone there was a neo-nazi. No hiding behind their Twitter account with plausible denial.

Agreed. Social media also incentivizes the worst kinds of behaviors.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen people damage public goods, bully people, wreck stores, drama farm, or clout shark because they know it has the potential to pop off on socials or will, in some Rube Goldbergian way, lead to them being able to monetize their lives.
