A few further thoughts about aviation and space travel..

For millenia man had wanted to fly, and had been unable to, despite all the effort. I’m not sure I would call it passive. Europe seems even a bit politically overactive, especially with the doubling of leadership, so there is not just national leaders in the palaces like Macron and Meloni, but also supranational leaders on Mount Olympus like Ursula von der Leyen and Kaja Kallas.

It is idiosyncratic place though. On the political level, Europe today is predominantly a left-wing matriarchy, with a nondemocratic suprastructure. Median age of the native population is approaching 50 years old. And even the younger people are living a pensioner style of life. This creates different priorities than in previous times.

Also, the moat or competitive advantage to the rest of the world is going into all kinds of niches. Until around the middle of the 20th century, the special competitiveness of Europe, in the world, was because of the advantage in engineering, mass production and logistics.

Today, Europe is still best in the world in many areas, but these are becoming niche. You can list some examples. France is most competitive country in the world for tourism, and the best in the world at making gourmet bread and cheese. Switzerland has the best chocolate and banking. Italy has the Pope, and they also are the world leaders in fashion and organized crime. Great Britain are the leaders in prestigious universities, aristocratic ceremonies and the television serials. “Double Irish” was a world leading in tax evasion, with help of “Dutch sandwich”, who are also the world leaders in bicycle lanes. And Sweden is moral superpower and they have the prophetess of the 21st century, Greta Thunberg.

Lebanon with its current borders was a mistake made by France back ~1920. The population mix made no sense. It worked for awhile when the Maronite Christian population plus Druze were able to dominate governance. But that was not properly guaranteed by law.

The ideal partition plan would involve India/Pakistan style migration. Muslims would move north to concentrate there. Christians and Druze would head south. The result would be realigning division to the most logical and durable borders.

If the international community prohibits this obvious & reasonable concept, the result will be an isolated semi-functional southern Muslim canton surrounded by Palestinian Jews, Lebanese Christians, and Lebanese Druze. This is potentially workable, but suboptimal.

If you insist that the lines must be drawn where people live now, the geographic discontinuity locks in a long-term liability. There will be a Muslim entity isolated in the south surrounded by Druze, Christian, and Jewish nations. Is there a religious or cultural imperative attached to these few square kilometers of land? The other alternative is drawing lines that avoid this long-term weakness. It does have higher short-term costs, such as providing honorable and compensated relocation to all those who move as part of fully separating populations. I think it is true that Western Europe does herald itself a bit too much vis-a-vis Eastern. The reality is that geography and climate are huge influences, and I am not sure that Hajnal concept isn’t overreferenced. However, Hezbollah is not really controlled by President Aoun. And, they are well known for oath breaking. If terrorists end the ceasefire, Israel will respond appropriately with necessary counter battery.

Iran is in such desperate financial condition it cannot afford to rescue Hezbollah. Presumably, some element in Tehran has ordered them to stand down. But, it is still unclear who is attempting to lead Iran and if they can deliver.

These are two very idiosyncratic characters but perhaps they do represent to some extent what’s going on in the West right now. I think that 15-20 years ago there wasn’t much debate about what Western institutions in general, including NATO, were trying to defend. Anyone would have said democracy, personal freedoms, humanitarian values, etc. There was plenty of hypocrisy and contradictions but the military actions in Yugoslavia and Libya could be dressed as humanitarian missions. With some more effort even Afghanistan and Iraq could be viewed in that angle of defending a system of common humanitarian values and trying to implement it there. That’s how the mission was sold in the latter years.

But what exactly do Western countries have in common now? Protection of innocent lives in war theaters is definitely not there anymore, if it ever was. Donbas made that clear. As for democracy, you pointed out above how the US electoral system has strong elements of corruption by special interests and I think that Europe has evolved towards something even worse: only some parties are allowed to win and the EU institutions do not hesitate to annul elections when non-approved parties win them. The only things in common that remain are the existence of elections (but even Cuba has that), mass migration everywhere and gender confusion. This is what NATO would currently be defending in a war against some real or imagined enemy.

To make matters worse, NATO has done a terrible job of providing security to its members and has been the crucial cause of a major war in Europe that could have been prevented without too much difficulty. The sooner NATO gets dissolved the better. It’s a fiction, it’s neither defensive nor are there any worthwhile values left to defend.

Germany politically clusters more with central Europe and I think it is just relatively more moderate compared to Western Europe. In Gaza, the ratio was 60% male, according to Hamas. Lebanon and Gaza are obviously different, as in Lebanon civilians are allowed to evacuate.

Civilian casualties are unanimously negative. But if we accept this, not just Hamas and Israel, but the international community mysteriously doesn’t prioritize reducing them in Gaza. Civilians in Gaza should have been evacuated on October 8. But we know if a tent city was built a few kilometres away in the Negev, the international community would call it “ethnic cleansing”, and it would have been determined as more illegal than what Israel actually did in terms of the aerial bombing and use of artillery in an urban area.

Fortunately, the issues are religious not ethnic. That makes it much easier. Virtually everyone is exclusively in one easily identified faction. Mixed religion marriages are exceedingly rare. Ethnicity is much harder to use as a dividing characteristic, because no one is 100% genetically pure.

Can the international community do the right thing? That is a fair question.

The underlying problem was created by France and the international community ~1920. It is not going away. They cannot escape ownership of their mistake.

It is a fine instrument for estimating statistical likelihoods. With individual unique snowflake humans one person’s test score means absolutely nothing more than where they ranked on this instrument for estimating statistical likelihoods.

As for Jordan Peterson he is fond of using the term verbal IQ which does not mean anything at all. The IQ test comes up with one estimate of a theorized G, general intellectual ability. The colleges figured out that one number isn’t as good as two so the SAT has two sections–verbal and mathematical. I presume Jordan likes that term because he scored great on the one section and not so great on the other. As for the more tangible reality behind the measurements I am of the opinion that for sure some people are smart and some people are smarter and some people are smartest; however the smartest people do dumb things all the time.

I think most people do not realize the SAT test philosophy has sort of a triage mindset as you explain. IQ/SAT always struck me as a very simple test approach designed to minimize the number of false positives (positive = “promising” college candidate) with less concern over the number of false negatives (false negative = bright candidate who did poorly on the test). In practical terms this makes sense until something better comes along. Maybe your A-One can help since they need to find the mandarins and high priests somewhere. Who knows, maybe the gold is hiding in the false negatives?

Some people forget the US has the best satellite imaging capabilities in the world. Most of the information on satellite reconnaissance seems to be classified. The US government presumably has very high resolution satellites monitoring Iran. The cameras/telescopes probably give much higher resolution than commercially available images such as found on Google maps, covering every meter of Iran. The government has supercomputers which process and scrub through the images to identify damage, repairs, movements, etc. The highest resolution satellites do not give continuous coverage of Iran, but US allies have less capable satellites which improve total coverage. The US also has satellites with radar sensors and others which monitor communications. The location and movements of Iranian vehicles can be tracked.

This does not include the information from hacked Iranian electronics, spies and infiltrators.

While a number of US and Israeli radars have been destroyed in this war, these were exposed and vulnerable. The US has some redundancy with sensors. Reportedly numerous Navy E-2D “Hawkeye” radar aircraft are deployed in the area (5 per carrier, more if needed). These can operate from land bases and have a more modern radar than the E-3 which was famously destroyed in Arabia.

Most episodes make internal sense. Those interested in science fiction require this as a minimum standard for entertainment. The Darmok episode is heavily memed because it is the exception that makes no sense.

Episodes with an obscure problem fixed by a techno babble solution feel shallow unless they are backed up with something else.

Story ideas that can be broken by technology are usually weeded out. TOS included teleporters because they had too little money to film the shuttles taking off and landing every episode. It became a huge problem for the writers because protagonists could beam away from danger. How many stories have contrived creations why the transporter is not available?

The Gaebrielius Landsbergis TCP dream fades slowly but surely.

Construction has officially commenced on the fourth phase of the Galkynysh gas field project in Turkmenistan, a major effort driven by the China National Petroleum Corp to increase natural gas exports to China.

The project, which held its groundbreaking in April 2026, involves drilling new wells and building facilities to process up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas annually.

Galkynysh is the world’s second-largest gas field. This phase is designed to deepen ties between Beijing and Ashgabat, reducing Chinese dependency on the Strait of Hormuz for imports.

The project includes extensive infrastructure to boost production capacity at the Galkynysh field, located in the Turkmen desert.
