Congratulations to Ukraine, condolences to the world

Pretty dramatic day in Russia: Ukrainian drones have reportedly attacked four Russia air bases, destroying a significant number of strategic bombers and radar planes. (Tu-95s, Tu-22, A-50)

Russian milbloggers are furious. One calls it a "black day," another says they need to nuke Kyiv.

NEW | Pictures are emerging of the preparation of the operation Ukraine carried out today, using drones inside trucks.

Ukrainian sources suggest the attack has been in the works for the past year and a half.

This is a great list: "52 things I learned in 2024"

Via Twist Street, I wanted to click on nearly every link on this list but here are my four favorites:

1. In the 1980's in San Francisco

there was a racket at one point where gangs would slash seats with knives so they’d have to be re-upholstered, generating overtime pay for BART workers and extra orders for materials suppliers. Specific patterns would be cut in so they’d know who to pay for the 'favor,’"

2. There's a cafe in Tokyo staffed by robots remotely operated by disabled people:

"Avatar Robot Cafe DAWN ver.β” is a permanent experimental cafe operated by OryLab Inc, where people who have difficulty going out for various reasons remotely operate our avatar robots OriHime and OriHime-D from their homes and hospitals, to provide service

3. Russia has experimented with drones trailing several kilometers of fiber optic cable to defeat radio jamming.

4. For the first time since 2015, Casio produced a new flagship calculator

the S100 exudes an air of luxury unlike any calculator before it. The hairline-finished machined aluminum body's exquisite appearance invites being held. A diamond cut is applied to the outer edge, creating an elegant highlight. Everything from the visibility of the gorgeous LCD screen to the satisfying haptic feedback of each button press has been refined to the smallest detail.

"North Korea has accused South Korea of using drones to scatter propaganda leaflets over ... Pyongyang"

TWZ:
According to the North Korean Foreign Ministry, the drone incursions occurred on several nights this week — October 3, 9, and 10
...
Meanwhile, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said they could not confirm the North’s accusations. They did, however, bring up the North Korean practice of sending balloons into South Korean airspace.

"Imagine receiving a traffic ticket in the mail because you were speeding down a Russian road in Kursk with a Ukrainian attack drone on your tail"

Ars quoting a Russian news outlet:

Mash claims that the traffic police are sympathetic and that given the drone situation, "speeding can be considered as committed in a state of extreme necessity." But those who receive a speeding ticket will have to challenge it in court on these grounds.

A member of Canada's soccer support team is believed to have used a drone to spy on the New Zealand soccer practice

Athletic:

A drone was flown over a Ferns training session in Saint-Étienne, France, on Monday, New Zealand’s Olympic Committee (NZOC) said in a statement Tuesday. Ferns staffers reported the drone to police, who detained the operator

...

The COC apologized to New Zealand’s players, federation and the Olympic Committee, saying it was “shocked and disappointed.”

"An average of six drones a day are being intercepted" near Olympics sites.

(Speaking of the Olympics, dancers scheduled to participate in the opening ceremony might strike)

A Houthi drone resembling a simple skiff "piloted" by mannequins struck a cargo ship

Photos and summary here:
The video also shows security personnel taking no action against the USV.

One is seen looking at it through binoculars while two guards hold their Hecker and Koch G3 rifles pointing inexplicably straight up instead of at the USV. The three watch as it steadily approaches for about 30 seconds.

There was a series of mysterious drone swarms around Langley Air Force Base last December

The Warzone:

there were already clear indications, especially from plane spotters using online flight-tracking software, that something unusual was going on in the skies over and around Langley and the rest of the Newport News area last December. This included a flurry of aerial activity, including what looked to be Air Force F-16 fighters conducting combat air patrols supported by aerial refueling tankers, over Newport News and other parts of southeastern Virginia

...

It is important to note that this is not the first time that Langley and other U.S. military bases across the country, including outlying U.S. territories, as well as critical civilian infrastructure, have been subjected to mysterious drone overflights. U.S. warships have also been swarmed off the coasts of the United States. U.S. military aircraft are also routinely encountering drones in various test and training ranges and other restricted military operating areas. America's nuclear power plants have had very troubling encounters with drone swarms. Yet the frequency and nature of the incursions in Virginia sound eerily similar to the bizarre claims of unidentified drone swarms roving over the plains of Colorado in the Winter of 2019-2020. The government response to those incidents was something of a meek sideshow compared to what clearly occurred regarding the Langley incidents

The Cybertruck "has an uncanny mix of features that could make it an incredibly cost-effective militarized drone"

The Warzone:

it's Cybertruck's full 'steer-by-wire' capability that is arguably the most attractive feature in terms of turning it into a UGV. The vehicle has no mechanical linkages between the steering system and the driver's wheel. Driver inputs are interpreted by the computer and then sent to its four-wheel steering system

...

This is especially attractive for unmanned applications. Control inputs could be handled and applied without manipulating legacy mechanical steering systems that exist on every other production vehicle, allowing for seamless uncrewed integration. Commands would go right from the computer to the electrically driven steering system.

And speaking of drones:

dramatic footage has come to light that shows Ukrainian FPV drone operators hunting for Russian armor inside a warehouse, exactly the kind of structure that one would think would conceal and thus protect assets from such attacks
