Ryan Reynolds rose to fame following his role in 2002's National Lampoon's Van Wilder, a comedy that paved the way for many similar roles. However, the actor made his mark in the film industry once he tackled the role of Deadpool, which became an extremely successful franchise, critically and commercially.
Outside of Deadpool, Reynolds starred in only one other live-action franchise: The Hitman's Bodyguard. Although the actor voiced Guy in several films from The Croods animated franchise, and had many films that could've gotten a sequel, Reynolds only reprised a live-action role in 2021 with Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard. The two films weren't massively successful and received negative reviews from the critics, but Tudum reveals that the franchise has just found a new life on streaming.

How to Train Your Dragon will soon surpass the box office earnings of the animated film as it passes another impressive milestone. While audiences have mixed feelings about live-action remakes, they often find success at the box office. DreamWorks' first foray into the live-action remake realm has been a major success so far, and it keeps improving.
In its third weekend of release, How to Train Your Dragon was finally dethroned from the No. 1 spot by F1: The Movie, a sports blockbuster starring Brad Pitt. However, Httyd still took second place, bringing in $19.4 million. According to Variety, the DreamWorks film has now reached $200.5 million domestically, and has passed $450 million at the worldwide box office, with a total of $454.5 million.
After this latest milestone, the live-action remake is now about $17 million away from passing the 2010 animated film domestically and about $40 million from passing it worldwide. Once it passes its predecessor,...

The live-action remake of 2010's How to Train Your Dragon became a box-office smash over the weekend, earning a series-best $83.7 million domestically. The initial previews for the new film highlighted the faithfulness of the adaptation, which in some cases perfectly recreated frames from the original film, directed by Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch) and the remake's helmer Dean DeBlois.
The element that carries over most directly to the live-action redo is undoubtedly the titular dragon, Toothless, whose more photorealistic design matches his 2010 imagining almost exactly.
But during the development of the first film, which was adapted from the book series by Cressida Cowell, Toothless started off with a very different look, one far afield from the sleek, cat-like black design that became essential to the franchise's iconography.
Sanders, during his Gold Standard career retrospective interview with Gold Derby, reflected on his time making the first How to Train Your Dragon, which...

Ryan Reynolds is lending his signature voice and wit to National Geographic’s Underdogs. The docuseries shines a light on the unsung heroes in the Animal Kingdom that often get overlooked by the proverbial cool kids in school such as elephants, lions, gorillas, and sharks. Who better to narrate each of the five episodes than Deadpool himself?! Reynolds is no stranger to the recording booth, working on everything from Great Bear Rainforest to The Croods, and let’s not forget, Detective Pikachu. Each installment of Underdogs centers on a certain subgroup or overarching theme starting with the June 15 premiere spotlighting “Superzeroes” and “Terrible Parents” As one would imagine with the Hollywood A-lister involved, this isn’t your typical educational doc. Rather that celebrates the outcasts, the unseen, and species who deserve our love and attention. There’s Barry the Honey Badger, Happy the Hyena, a pistol shrimp that can fire...

Aside from breaking the laws of aviation, bees were able to break another achievement. The 2007 Dreamworks animated feature Bee Movie made its way to the streaming charts before the week ended, beating out two more recent animation blockbuster hits. The movie made its way back onto Netflix at the start of June, and since then, people haven't gotten enough of Jerry Seinfeld and this story about a friendship between Man and Bee.
According to Flix Patrol, Bee Movie landed at number 3 in the Top 10 films in the United States on June 5, 2025, beating out The Wild Robot and Despicable Me 4, which placed 7 and 8, respectively. The Croods is back, and streaming numbers prove it still rocks, 12 years later. With a solid 71% Rotten Tomatoes score, this prehistoric animated adventure starring Ryan Reynolds has stormed back into relevance thanks to a new surge in viewership on streaming platforms.
Despite flying under the radar for a while, The Croods is once again capturing hearts with its quirky humor, chaotic family dynamics, and Reynolds’ charm as Guy. Its unexpected return just proves some movies age like fine wine, especially when they come with Stone Age shenanigans, fire, and sloth-powered storytelling.

While it's a stretch to call any Disney animated movie a "surprise hit," Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois' "Lilo & Stitch" caught critics and audiences off guard during the summer of 2002 by being a visually inventive, hand-drawn hoot of a cartoon. At this point, Disney's best animated work was coming out of Pixar, so it was refreshing to see a wholly original, non-cg feature delight in a way that called to mind the company's in-house heyday.
The tale of an unlikely friendship between a smart, fiercely independent six-year-old and a chaotic, hyper-destructive alien experiment being pursued by his creators, the film exploded off the screen thanks to its colorful Hawaiian setting and anarchic sense of humor. The movie tugged at viewers' heartstrings with its theme about the importance of family (which is infused with Lilo's sorrow over the recent death of her parents), and turned into a merchandising smash...

Nicolas Cage admits that he does not regret passing on a widely successful buddy comedy movie, 31 years after it premiered. Cage has maintained a genre-spanning career, which includes unusual and transformative performances in Vampire's Kiss and Face/Off. After winning an Academy Award for Leaving Las Vegas, he appeared in numerous blockbuster movies, ranging in audience reception, including the National Treasure and Ghost Rider franchises. More recently, Cage portrayed Dracula in Renfield and shocked fans as a demonic serial killer in Longlegs.
Throughout his film catalog, Cage has also had many comedic roles, including Raising Arizona and the self-referential The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Demonstrating that he can be equally funny and romantic, as well as dramatic, Cage has starred opposite Cher in Moonstruck and Laura Dern in Wild at Heart. Kristen Wiig plays an eccentric, if not villainous cat lady in the trailer for Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie from DreamWorks Animation, which dropped an official trailer on Thursday ahead of a Sept. 26, 2025 theatrical release.

Nicolas Cage is a renowned actor with numerous awards to his name, but his latest movie is struggling to gain traction. Having started his Hollywood career in 1981 in the show The Best of Times, he quickly pivoted to the big screen. Cage found roles in Raising Arizona (1987), Moonstruck (1987), and Face/Off (1997), all while earning prominence fairly quickly. In the 2000s, he would star in National Treasure (2004), Ghost Rider (2007), and Kick-Ass (2010), among countless other films. He even gained renown as a voice actor, starring in The Croods (2013) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).
Cage will be starring in Spider-Noir, a detective spin-off from the Sony Spider-Man universe.
If Nicolas Cage's impressive career is not astounding enough, he has also won several awards from major organizations. He earned Best Actor at the Academy Awards for his performance as Ben Sanderson in 1995's Leaving Las Vegas, alongside a nomination for his work in Adaptation (2002). He...

The top five most viewed Netflix movies and shows for last week, listed on Tudum, have some big hitters in there. The movies had over 30 million views, and the top five shows had another 40 million. And that’s just for the week to April 13. That’s a whole lot of watching going on.
On the movie front, viewers continued to love a recent romantic comedy and a couple of prehistoric settings. There’s the warmth and humor from a new family comedy and a fun caper for all ages, with the ever-present scenario of good versus bad. Mind you, these are the goodies in this particular film.
As for the shows, those 40 million viewers have made some great choices. A strong view of society and its problems is a theme for the two at the top. But that's balanced with a touch of animation and that good versus evil theme again.

Netflix’s new medical series has been out for nearly two weeks now, and after debuting with poor scores from critics and audiences from Rotten Tomatoes, it has still been a win for the platform. Despite ratings of 46% from audiences and 52% from critics on the aggregate site, Pulse remains one of the most popular shows on Netflix, sitting at #4 on the streamer’s top TV chart. When it comes to the world of animation, Hollywood has reached new heights with projects such as The Wild Robot, Kung Fu Panda, and Despicable Me, to name a few. But long before in the ’90s, there was one movie featuring the voice of actress Sandra Bullock and Val Kilmer that quietly became a masterpiece – that not a lot of people often talk about.
It was not the usual story about fairy tales, but it was a detailed, deep, emotional story with powerful themes. Apart from the actors, even the iconic Steven Spielberg played a major role in making this movie happen.

Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown are two of the biggest names in streaming, and they have teamed up for a new Netflix hit. After rising to prominence for playing Andy Dwyer on the sitcom Parks and Recreation, Pratt solidified his fame by starring in two highly successful film franchises – playing Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Owen Grady in the Jurassic World trilogy. In recent years, he's also had a consistent presence on streaming, starring in the Prime Video movie The Tomorrow War and the series The Terminal List.

“Adolescence” debuted as Netflix’s most-watched TV show of the week with an impressive audience for its opening weekend.
After debuting its four hour-long episodes on Thursday, March 13, “Adolescence” scored 24.3 million views through Sunday, March 16, making the limited series the most-watched TV show on Netflix during the week of March 10.
The opening weekend viewership for “Adolescence” outpaced that of other recent Netflix original series, including “The Night Agent” Season 2, which debuted to 13.9 million views, and “Zero Day,” which debuted to 19.1 million views during the week of Feb. 17. Likewise, “Running Point” scored 9.3 million views in its first week on the streamer.

“Adolescence” was by far the most-watched English TV show on Netflix this week, with “Running Point” coming in as the No.

What is it that makes Chris Sanders' animated movies distinct? For starters, there's their visual acuity. His feature debut, "Lilo & Stitch," which Sanders wrote and directed with Dean DeBlois, features warm and inviting watercolor backdrops to match the rich, earthy tones and incredible 3D flying sequences of Sanders and DeBlois' sophomore effort, "How to Train Your Dragon" (still one of DreamWorks Animation's highest achievements). Even the somewhat underappreciated "The Croods" (a film that Sanders co-helmed with Kirk DeMicco) brings its prehistoric setting to life with striking, vibrant hues.
Sanders also has a fondness for weirdos and outcasts who form surprising connections with one another, whether they're a peculiar, tempestuous girl befriending an alien miscreant or a scrawny, yammering Viking bonding with a feral dragon. In a larger sense, his films are about families (be they formed by blood or choice) and communities overcoming their differences to help each...

In a big win that underscored the growing prominence of indepedent animation, Gints Zibalodis’ “Flow,” the moving dialog-free tale of a solitary cat’s journey as it learns to survive after a great flood – that was made with open-source software Blender for just $3.4 million – won the Academy Award for best animated feature. It was the first nomination and first win for Latvia; “Flow” is also nominated for best animated feature.
“I’m really moved by the warm reception our film has had, and I hope that you’ll open doors to independent animation filmmakers around the world,” Zibalodis said, accepting the award. “This is the first time a film from Latvia has ever been nominated. This year’s Academy Awards will mark the 23rd year there’s been a category for Best Animated Feature. The past winners have included a good mix of top earners (the first award went to Shrek!) and some more, shall we say, sophisticated choices. Indeed, last year, the prize went to Hayao Miyazaki, the grand master of Japanese animation, for The Boy and the Heron. Before that, Hollywood’s favorite kid-in-a-toy-store Guillermo del Toro won for his adaptation of Pinocchio. This year’s animation Academy Award is not as easy to predict as some other categories, but we’ve gone to the drawing board, and this is what we’ve sketched out.
Frontrunner: The Wild Robot
There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that The Wild Robot will be the one to take home the prize. For starters, have you seen it? It’s pretty damn cute. Lupita Nyong’o voices...

DreamWorks’ animated feature The Wild Robot boasts a nearly-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%, and now the Chris Sanders-written and directed film has been nominated for three Academy Awards. Per Deadline, Sanders, who watched the nominations from Tokyo, Japan while touring with The Wild Robot, said getting the news of the film’s three nominations was “amazing.”
“(On Monday) we were screening the film and introducing it to the very first audience here, and now to get this nomination has been amazing. Three nominations, it’s incredible,” Sanders said of the film that is based on the series of books of the same name by Peter Brown.
The Wild Robot, which in addition to its 97% Tomatometer Score, has a 98% Popcornmeter, or audience score based on 5,000+ reviews, has earned more than $342 million worldwide since its release in September 2024. The film was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Animated Feature Film, Best...

The Wild Robot made history for DreamWorks Animation on Thursday when it received three Oscar nominations: Best Animated Feature (Chris Sanders and Jeff Hermann), Best Score (Kris Bowers), and Best Sound. That’s the most bids ever for a single film in the studio’s 30-year history.
“I could not be more delighted,” director-writer Sanders tells Gold Derby via phone from Japan, where The Wild Robot was “on the verge of opening widely.”
“So many people work on these for such a long time, and this sort of recognition is just so wonderful.”
Sanders is now tied with Pete Docter and Hayao Miyazaki with four nominations in the Best Animated Feature category. Sanders previously contended at the Oscars for Lilo & Stitch (2002), How to Train Your Dragon (2010), and The Croods (2013), and is now looking for his first win.

Chris Sanders is no stranger to the Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination. Every animated feature he has directed — “Lilo & Stitch,” “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Croods” —has been nominated. But none, so far, have won. Some of this is understandable (“Lilo & Stitch” lost to Hayao Miyazaki’s undisputed masterpiece “Spirited Away”) but it still seems odd that one of the kings of modern animation is still empty-handed.
That could change with his latest marvel, “The Wild Robot.” Based on the beloved book by Peter Brown, “The Wild Robot” follows Rozzum unit 7134 (voiced with delicacy and humor by Lupita Nyong’o), a high-tech service robot who washes ashore on a deserted island populated only by animals. That’s where she accidentally destroys the nest of a gosling (voice by Kit Connor), whom she later raises as her son. The film is another wild stylistic swing from DreamWorks Animation, pushing...

The Wild Robot is a win for DreamWorks Animation, but it also marks a surprising first for the studio with a clever reference. Chris Sanders delivers yet another touching story after having directed Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods in the past. The movie follows Roz, a serviceable robot who defies her programming when she becomes a gosling’s mother. The Wild Robot’s amazing reviews prove it even has the potential to win the studio’s third Academy Award.
The Wild Robot’s ending makes a strong case for the relationship between motherhood and nature, as Roz’s nurturing and self-sacrificing qualities shock her hostile animal neighbors and motivate them to work together. The Wild Robot benefits from a star-studded cast and features behind-the-scenes work by some of the most influential artists and storytellers. Live-action remakes of classic animated films may have made boatloads of money, but there is an understandable trepidation about them (if not outright hostility). The trend has grown exponentially this century, from 16 live-action Disney reboots of animated movies and a slew of live-action interpretations of anime to remakes of modern cartoon hits like Avatar: The Last Airbender and How to Train Your Dragon. Lilo & Stitch is being added to the list in 2025, though it may seem to be a rare example of an IP surviving the transition to live-action with dignity and ingenuity. First, because of the direction from the excellent Dean Fleischer Camp, but also because of the involvement of Chris Sanders.

According to Gold Derby’s current combined predictions, “The Wild Robot” is the frontrunner to win Best Animated Feature at the Oscars with 10/3 odds. If it prevails, it would be just the third film from DreamWorks Animation to do so. But the movie may prove to be an even stronger contender than many are expecting.

DreamWorks’ latest animated feature, The Wild Robot, has been received extremely well by both critics and audiences. As of the writing of this article, the movie scores a 98% on both critical and audience scores.
Unfortunately, the praise doesn’t translate to box office success. In its nearly four weeks in theaters, the film has earned just over $152 million against a $78 million budget. The movie has nearly crossed the break-even point, however, it wasn’t very well advertised, meaning that Universal probably didn’t see it as a priority compared to established IPs such as Kung Fu Panda 4 from earlier this year.
While the movie isn’t a huge moneymaker like some other DreamWorks films, it has since gained a cult following, with multiple pieces of fan art from talented creators being made.

"The Wild Robot," the heartstring-tugging new animated film from "How to Train Your Dragon" co-director Christopher Sanders, earned a rare 10 out of 10 review from /Film when it screened at Fantastic Fest earlier this month. The story follows a robot called Rozzum unit 7134, aka "Roz," who emerges from her crate to find that she's been shipwrecked on an island with lots of animals, but no humans. After an orphaned gosling imprints on her, Roz has to figure out how to be a mother -- something that wasn't exactly included in her programming.
/Film's Ryan Scott wasn't alone in giving this film a rave review. "The Wild Robot" has a near-perfect score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, which might be the reason it's racing ahead of expectations at the box office. Per The Wrap, Universal was projecting a $20 million-plus debut, and third-party estimates were in the $24-30 million range.

DreamWorks Animation and Universal’s family film The Wild Robot is charming reviewers and audiences alike, boasting both a stellar 98 percent Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a 98 percent audience score, not to mention an A CinemaScore from moviegoers. Thanks to great word of mouth, Wild Robot came in No. 1 with an estimated $35 million.
If only the love were being spread around.
Francis Ford Coppola — in one of the low points of his long and illustrious career — is watching his new movie Megalopolis get almost utterly rejected by moviegoers (it was likewise maligned by many critics). The film received a disastrous D+ CinemaScore from audiences and only cleared an estimated $4 million in its domestic debut (many rivals predict final numbers will be lower). Heading into the weekend, tracking and Lionsgate expected it to do at least $5 million to $7 million.
