After debuting its four hour-long episodes on Thursday, March 13, “Adolescence” scored 24.3 million views through Sunday, March 16, making the limited series the most-watched TV show on Netflix during the week of March 10.

The opening weekend viewership for “Adolescence” outpaced that of other recent Netflix original series, including “The Night Agent” Season 2, which debuted to 13.9 million views, and “Zero Day,” which debuted to 19.1 million views during the week of Feb. 17. Likewise, “Running Point” scored 9.3 million views in its first week on the streamer.

Still, viewership for “Adolescence” was not enough to beat Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt-led “The Electric State,” which debuted to 25.2 million views, ranking as the most-watched movie of the week on Netflix.

The Wild Robot made history for DreamWorks Animation on Thursday when it received three Oscar nominations: Best Animated Feature (Chris Sanders and Jeff Hermann), Best Score (Kris Bowers), and Best Sound. That’s the most bids ever for a single film in the studio’s 30-year history.

“I could not be more delighted,” director-writer Sanders tells Gold Derby via phone from Japan, where The Wild Robot was “on the verge of opening widely.”

“So many people work on these for such a long time, and this sort of recognition is just so wonderful.”

Sanders is now tied with Pete Docter and Hayao Miyazaki with four nominations in the Best Animated Feature category. Sanders previously contended at the Oscars for Lilo & Stitch (2002), How to Train Your Dragon (2010), and The Croods (2013), and is now looking for his first win.

Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot will begin streaming on Peacock on Friday, January 24.

The animated film, based on Peter Brown’s New York Times bestseller, has brought in more than $324 million at the global box office since its September release. It’s also currently available to rent/purchase on Prime Video, Apple TV and other VOD platforms.

Directed by Chris Sanders, The Wild Robot stars Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o as Roz, a robot that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must adapt to the harsh surroundings. Unfortunately, the praise doesn’t translate to box office success. In its nearly four weeks in theaters, the film has earned just over $152 million against a $78 million budget. The movie has nearly crossed the break-even point, however, it wasn’t very well advertised, meaning that Universal probably didn’t see it as a priority compared to established IPs such as Kung Fu Panda 4 from earlier this year.

The Wild Robot is continuing to wow audiences in theaters and now the director has confirmed that a sequel is in the works.

Heading into its third weekend at the box office, the animated film is expected to come in second place again for the weekend. It has already grossed more than $74 million at the domestic box office after just 15 days in theaters and over $111 million worldwide.

Variety will host its third annual “Pixels and Pencils” series at this year’s Scad Savannah Film Festival on Monday, Oct. 28. The panel, featuring directors of some of the year’s most celebrated animated feature films, is presented in partnership with the Savannah College of Art and Design (Scad).
