“Shrinking” star Christa Miller and “The Bear” star Abby Elliott agree that their “mugging” for the camera days are behind them.
Speaking on TheWrap’s “Leading With Laughter: Crafting Unforgettable Characters” panel at Wednesday’s inaugural Women of Comedy Emmy Showcase in Beverly Hills, the two TV comedy actresses shared that as the small screen has evolved towards highly produced limited series and shifted away from the multi-cam sitcom, their style has adapted, too.
“I started in sketch comedy, I really thought that comedy was, when I was starting out, pushing for a laugh,” Elliott said. “I had never really done anything as serious as ‘The Bear,’ and in that, you know, I really had to kind of act.”
Moderated by Whitney Cummings, the panel also included Wendi McLendon-Covey of “St. Denis Medical” and Brenda Song of “Running Point.” McLendon-Covey echoed the “Saturday Night Live” star-turned-sitcom actress, saying the industry...

Season 2 of Shrinking delivered some big laughs, a lot of tears, and a surprising How I Met Your Mother reunion. Jason Segel (who played Marshall Erikson in Himym) stars in Apple TV+'s hit series as Jimmy Laird, a therapist who can't get his own life together after the unexpected death of his wife. Season 2 included a very surprising cameo from his former Himym co-star, Cobie Smulders, as Sofi, whom Jimmy buys a car from for his daughter. While some thought the cameo would be a one-off, it appears that Shrinking has grander plans for Sofi in the upcoming third season.
During a recent panel with the cast of Shrinking, Christa Miller (Liz in Shrinking) and Segel revealed that Cobie Smulders will be back in the show's third season, and what it meant for Segel to have another Himym reunion. "I got to work with Cobie today, who I'm obsessed with,...

Michael J. Fox’s highly anticipated return to television after a five-year acting hiatus marks a reunion with longtime friend, colleague, and Shrinking executive producer Bill Lawrence, who tells Gold Derby that Fox was “a huge mentor” during their days together on Spin City.
Lawrence hints that we may get a classic Fox performance for more than one episode of Shrinking: “[Fox] made the mistake of saying he had so much fun. So I'm like, ‘Oh, you got to come again and again!’" says Lawrence.
“I loved seeing everybody still flabbergasted by Fox's timing, because his comedic timing is just bananas to this day,” added Lawrence, who said he was especially touched by watching Harrison Ford and Fox together: “Watching Harrison not only as a scene partner with Mike, but the respect he gave Mike was so amazing.”

"Shrinking" star Christa Miller, who plays rock-collecting empty nester Liz on the brilliant Apple TV+ series, can portray an incredibly diverse range of women. Even just as Liz, the next-door neighbor to Jason Segel's grieving therapist character Jimmy, she shows her ability to be truly complex, balancing maternal warmth and venomous vitriol all within herself in a single scene. But long before she played the astonishingly great Liz or even snark queen Jordan on "Scrubs," Miller played two wildly different roles on the hit NBC sitcom "Seinfeld." What's even funnier is that both characters interacted almost entirely with Jason Alexander's character George Constanza, first as his potential employer, whom he ends up offending in a major way, and then later as his girlfriend, though it doesn't last long.

"The doctor will see you now," Harrison Ford told a group of Emmy voters as he opened the door to his character's therapy office during a one-of-a-kind set visit for Apple TV+'s Shrinking, held Friday at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank.
Ford and the rest of the cast — Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, Christa Miller, Ted McGinley, and Brett Goldstein — had been filming since 6 a.m., but they stayed overtime until late in the evening to shake hands with Television Academy members and answer their burning questions. The whole ensemble then joined moderator Yvette Nicole Brown and showrunner Bill Lawrence at the Steven J. Ross Theater for a hilarious Q&a (in which some Season 3 spoilers were exposed), followed by a screening of the Season 2 finale.

According to Deadline, Michael J. Fox is set to return to television with a major guest-starring role in the upcoming third season of Shrinking. The appearance marks something of a reunion, as the comedy-drama was co-created by Bill Lawrence — who also co-created Spin City, the series that Fox led for four seasons before stepping away due to his Parkinson’s diagnosis.
The acclaimed comedy/drama follows grieving therapist Jimmy (Jason Segel), who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives, including his own. Harrison Ford stars alongside Jason Segel as Dr. Paul Rhoades, one of Jimmy’s colleagues at the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Center.
It’s unknown who Fox might be playing, but Deadline wonders if it will be connected to Ford’s character, who is revealed to have Parkinson’s disease.

Michael J. Fox and “Spin City” fans — you’re in for a treat. After not appearing in an on-screen role since his 2020 appearance on “The Good Fight,” Fox will return to acting as a guest star in the upcoming Season 3 of “Shrinking,” Apple TV+ announced Thursday.
Long a staple of television sitcoms, Fox previously worked with “Shrinking” showrunner Bill Lawrence on “Spin City” and also guest-starred on his later series “Scrubs.”
Mirroring the show’s own depiction of Parkinson’s disease through Harrison Ford’s character Dr. Paul Rhoades, Fox has been living with the ailment for 30 years. In that time, Fox through his organization The Michael J. Fox Foundation has raised over $2 billion for Parkinson’s research and has been a vocal advocate for how the disease is perceived. The last time Tom Howe spoke with Deadline about his musical compositions for the Apple TV+ comedy series Shrinking, the composer expressed the hope he would be able to further unpack the opening theme song, “Frightening Fishes” in a Season 2.
Season 2 arrived on the streamer in October 2024, and Howe got his chance to do that unpacking at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television.
“The nice thing was about going into Season 2, you can do a lot of variations on the theme and also introduce new themes with different characters and things like that,” Howe said on the show’s panel. “And there also was an opportunity for some longer cues. Apple TV+ has released another binge-watchable show, Carême, this time in the French language. Based on the book Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Carême, The First Celebrity Chef, the show’s story explores a fictionalized version of historical chef Antonin Carême.
Benjamin Voisin plays the expert baker who hesitantly becomes part of Napoleon’s consulate as a spy. He initially turns down the job at Tulleries. However, Napoleon holds his father captive, and he seeks help from the nobleman Talleyrand, who has revolutionary tendencies.
Martin Bourboulon’s series is a visual treat, however, it fails to go all the way to become the promised groundbreaking period drama. Food and s*x are the driving force behind this show. When all of that is presented in a visually appealing manner, a show lacking real substance can easily earn a spot on many people’s must-watch lists without much effort.

Martin Bourboulon’s series is a visual treat, however, it fails to go all the way to become the promised groundbreaking period drama. Food and s*x are the driving force behind this show. When you speak with Ted McGinley, it quickly becomes clear why he’s still thriving in Hollywood after more than four decades.

Brett Goldstein, who is widely known for his work as Roy Kent from Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, not only stars in the show but also co-writes it along with Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt. It has been known that Goldstein initially got on board with the team of Ted Lasso as a writer, but later, when they started developing the storyline for Roy Kent, he was inclined towards playing it on-screen. To his luck, his audition was just the thing the makers had been looking for, and thus, he got the part.

Ted McGinley has been a television star for decades, dating back to his debut performance on Happy Days and series regular work in '80s stalwarts like The Love Boat, Dynasty, and Married… With Children. However, for years, McGinley was dogged by an unfounded reputation as a show killer, to the extent that McGinley has said in past interviews that his moniker as the “patron saint of jumping the shark” cost him acting jobs.
So, McGinley is understandably emotional about the universal acclaim he’s received for his performance on the Apple TV+ comedy series Shrinking.
“I’m telling you, I’ve been brought to tears,” McGinley tells Gold Derby. “I’m so used to being the worst, or being told that I’m such a bad guy to add to a show. This has been an amazing journey and experience, and I honestly feel blessed. I’m working in scenes with Harrison Ford.

Harrison Ford is stellar as ever in Apple TV+’s show Shrinking. What inevitably caught the attention of viewers is the interesting dynamic shared by the pivotal characters played by Harrison Ford and Christa Miller. Their palpable chemistry is much talked about, both on and off camera.
Miller plays the role of Liz, who is the trouble-making, nosy neighbor to Dr. Paul Rhodes, played by Ford. She was apparently so in awe of him that Miller’s husband once pointed out that she was being “too thirsty” in her interactions with the 82 year old legendary actor.

The two-time Emmy winner joins a cast that also includes Harrison Ford, Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell and Ted McGinley; co-creator Brett Goldstein recurred in season two.
Details of how Jimmy’s dad enters the show are being kept quiet for now. Season two ended with Jimmy forgiving the drunk driver (Goldstein) who caused the accident that left him widowed — and himself for how he had previously handled his relationship with his daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell).
