The daughter of Bonnie Trompeter Miller and Chuck Miller, she is the niece of Susan Saint James and Dick Ebersol. Her uncle Dick Ebersol and cousin Charles were seriously hurt in a November 2004 plane crash that claimed the lives of four people, including her 14-year-old cousin Edward "Teddy" Ebersol. Another cousin of hers is Willie Ebersol.

Miller had a recurring role on Scrubs (2001), which her husband co-created.

She was on the cover of the premier issue of Maxim Magazine in 1997, wearing a Cleveland Indians jersey. At the time, she was starring on Le Drew Carey Show (1995), which was set in Cleveland, Ohio but filmed in Hollywood.

Close friends with actresses Sarah Chalke and Nicole Sullivan.

Miller has three children by husband Bill Lawrence. Their first child, daughter Charlotte Lawrence (Charlotte Sarah Lawrence), was born on June 8, 2000 in Los Angeles. Their second child and first son William Stoddard Lawrence arrived on January 3, 2003, followed by third child and second son Henry Lawrence (Henry Vanduzer Lawrence) on October 8, 2006.

Had lived with Grant Shaud before meeting her future husband, Bill Lawrence.
