After Beetlejuice 2, Jenna Ortega Names Another Iconic Franchise Born in the '80s She Wants to Join
Image
Modern scream queen Jenna Ortega has been a part of several iconic franchises, given her roles in Scream, Wednesday, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. If she had her pick to join any franchise she wanted to next, she pointed to the one born from the 1984 horror comedy classic Gremlins.

Per IMDb, Ortega was recently at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) to promote her new film, Death of a Unicorn. Reflecting on the movies she loved as a child, Ortega mentioned Gremlins, the film that garnered a sequel along with an animated prequel series. She also made it clear she wants to join a potential third Gremlins film if one ever gets made.

"You know what I used to love as a kid? Gremlins," Ortega said. "Gremlins, would love... Gremlins 3? 4? I don't know. Call me!"

Joe Dante Shares Rare Images from the Darker Version of ‘Gremlins’
Image
It’s no secret that Joe Dante’s Gremlins was originally written as a much darker film than it ended up being, with infamous scenes including Billy’s mom getting beheaded and his dog being eaten by the Gremlins ultimately being axed from the script before production began. The beloved holiday classic of course ended up being a PG-rated movie, but even that final version of the movie proved to be a little too much for some family audiences at the time.

As director Joe Dante himself has explained, “I think people were upset… They felt like they had been sold something family friendly and it wasn’t entirely family friendly.”

In fact, Gremlins is one of the movies that led the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating in 1984, a new rating somewhere between PG and R that felt a bit more suited to a movie like Gremlins.

This whole...

Gremlins Writer Addresses Who Dies in Darker Original Script and the 1 Scene He Fought to Keep
Image
While certainly not without its horror elements, Gremlins has been a beloved Christmas movie for the past four decades. It's just dark enough that it's often recommended as a "gateway horror film" for newcomers to the genre to watch before taking on more mature content, but the original plan was for Gremlins to be much more brutal.

Nosferatu producer Chris Columbus, the screenwriter of the Joe Dante-directed film, addressed what didn't make the final cut from his original script in a new interview with Vanity Fair. He shared how the body count was pretty high, noting how Lynn Peltzer (Frances Lee McCain), Billy's (Zach Galligan) mother, was scripted to be decapitated before later getting her life spared by rewrites. Another planned death was for the dog to actually be viciously killed by the Gremlins rather than harmlessly hung up in Christmas lights.

“Chetz-Wubba!” – The ‘Gremlins’ Novelization Reveals the Bizarre Origin of Gizmo
Image
Novelization fans know the majority of literary tie-ins stick closely to their source materials rather than stray from them, but whenever one does make notable changes, they take notice. Gremlins is one such case. Indeed, the late George Gipe stayed true to the spirit of that Christmas spectacle we have all come to love and celebrate each winter, however, the author also took artistic license — primarily with the adorable face of the Gremlins franchise, to whom he gave an origin that is truly out of this world.

Everyone knows the gist of Gremlins by now: A small American town is overrun by monsters around Christmas, and only one young man — along with his strange new pet named “Gizmo” — can put an end to the holiday horror. Gipe, who also penned the novelizations for Back to the Future and Explorers, didn’t think to change the basic story of Joe Dante...

Sarah Paulson encounters a killer in a deadly fog of dust in the maddening Hold Your Breath trailer
Image
People in the 1930s had it rough. Alongside the Great Depression, one of the most tragic eras in U.S. history, food scarcity was a constant threat while authorities mythologized violent crimes instead of shooting straight with citizens. It’s a good thing there isn’t a deadly dust storm blowing through town while a cold-blooded killer is on the loose. Oh, wait. There is. In Searchlight Pictures’ Hold Your Breath trailer, Sarah Paulson protects her family against the dangers of a relentless storm while a phantom killer runs loose. Grab your masks and hold onto your butts!

Karrie Crouse and William Joines, who regularly collaborates with Crouse, direct Hold Your Breath from Crouse’s script. The duo’s period thriller takes place in 1930s Oklahoma amid the region’s horrific dust storms, where a woman believes a sinister presence is threatening her family from the fog of swirling debris.

Stand By Me Cast & Where They Are Now
Image
Stand By Me is an undeniable 80s classic, and many of its young actors would go on to have impressive careers. Based on the Steven King novella The Body, the film unfolds the dramatic story of four young boys who set out to discover the dead body of a missing boy. Despite its dark premise, Stand By Me is really a touching tale about youth and friendship. Its enduring influence has earned it a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rob Reiner's coming-of-age story has appealed to each generation with its timeless themes and remains one of the best movies about childhood. Set in 1950s Oregon, the film banked on its adult audience's nostalgia for an era of baseball cards and drive-in movie theaters. Revisiting the film today produces another kind of nostalgia for those who grew up in the era it was released, though. The young cast of Stand By Me...

4K Uhd Blu-ray Review: Albert Brooks’s ‘Real Life’ on the Criterion Collection
Image
In 1973, PBS aired a 12-episode documentary series called The American Family that followed a year in the life of the Loud family of Santa Barbara, California. At first blush the very image of postwar American prosperity and contentment, the Louds slowly unraveled over the course of the show, revealing fissures in the mother and father’s marriage and the tumult of teenage adolescence in a time of rapid social upheaval and growing pessimism.

Critics and academics continue to debate the extent to which the cameras’ presence throughout The American Family, which is widely referred to as the first example of an American reality TV show, merely captured the hidden side of an ostensibly happy family or engendered tension by virtue of the participants’ awareness of being filmed for public scrutiny. And it’s this angle that Albert Brooks explores in his feature-length directorial debut, Real Life, which begins as a...

Gremlins Almost Cast Tom Hanks, But Not In The Role You'd Think
Image
Tom Hanks was a television star in 1982 and, 42 years ago, if what you really wanted was to be a movie star, that was a problem.

Actors had made the transition from small-screen success to big-screen stardom before, but Hanks' claim to fame was as one-half of the cross-dressing duo living in an all-women's apartment building on the ABC sitcom "Bosom Buddies." Though the show was initially a hit, the gimmick quickly wore thin, and Hanks found himself back on the casting market.

Post-"Bosom Buddies," Hanks' sole film credit was in the 1980 slasher flick "He Knows You're Alone," and, to his credit, he was so charismatic that the filmmakers opted not to kill him off onscreen. Still, that's not much to hang your hat on, nor was, unfortunately, two years of mild television notoriety. The biggest sitcom stars of the 1970s roughly in Hanks' age range were getting star vehicle...

Joe Dante in Burying the Ex (2014)
Gremlins at 40: Joe Dante’s untamed classic is a love letter to chaos
Joe Dante in Burying the Ex (2014)
Even in the less conventional summer of 1984, the Spielberg-produced comedy horror was a gleeful rule-breaker

There’s no character in Joe Dante’s Gremlins more beloved than Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton), a struggling inventor from small-town Kingston Falls who travels the country bearing a great sales pitch (“I make the illogical logical”) and a bunch of products that keep backfiring on him. His Bathroom Buddy, a combination shaving mirror/toothbrush/toothpick/nail file/dental mirror, could be a Swiss army knife for overnighters were it not for a misfiring toothpaste button. His coffee machine makes sludge. His peeler-juicer is a kitchen-wide pulp explosion. And his egg-cracker is much more successful at breaking eggs than it’s designed to be.

Yet when Randall comes home for Christmas, he’s greeted to a hero’s welcome from his son, Billy (Zach Galligan), and his wife, Lynn (Frances Lee McCain), who laments...

The Original Script For Gremlins Was A Gory, Violent, R-Rated Horror Movie
Image
Despite a copious amount of violence, multiple deaths, and slimy, goopy scenes wherein little monsters get blended, torched, melted, and otherwise horribly mutilated, Joe Dante's Frank Capra spoof "Gremlins" was released on June 8, 1984, with a PG rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. Producer Steven Spielberg recognized that "Gremlins," in being so tonally whimsical, wasn't quite raw enough to warrant an R-rating, yet also realized that it might be a little too terrifying for the kids who were allowed to see PG-rated movies. Spielberg suggested to the MPAA that it introduce a PG-13 rating to cover films like "Gremlins." It should also be noted that, in 1984, a PG rating was similarly given to Spielberg's violent adventure film "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," so it was high time a stop-gap be included.

The PG-13 rating was introduced on July 1, less than a month after "Gremlins" opened. Weirdly,...

2 ‘Gremlins’ Movies to Keep Your Holidays Scary and Merry [12 Days of Creepmas]
Image
Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Days of Creepmas is nearly at an end, so it’s time to bring out the big guns in holiday horror. The 2nd Day of Creepmas brings a pair of gateway horror-comedies that will keep you busy from Christmas through New Year’s Eve.

When it comes to holiday horror, few can beat Joe Dante’s Gremlins. The charming 1984 classic decks the halls with holiday theming but it’s also unafraid to show its sharp pointy teeth. Dante’s sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, takes a drastically different direction, but its high energy and anything goes attitude make a strong case for annual New Year’s viewing.

The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 2 Gremlins movies to keep your holidays going through the New Year.

Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

Kevin Bacon Wasn't Happy With the Fame Footloose Brought Him
Image
Kevin Bacon was not enthusiastic about the fame he gained from Footloose, wanting to be seen as a serious actor instead. Bacon initially didn't fully comprehend that Footloose was a dance movie and wasn't trained as a dancer. The Footloose cast included several notable actors, such as Lori Singer, Dianne Wiest, John Lithgow, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Although for many Footloose is one of the most important films in Kevin Bacon's filmography, and has become a classic, the actor was not very sure about joining the cast. And, in fact, he was not very happy with the fame he achieved thanks to that film.

By 1984, when Footloose was released, Bacon had already made ten films and had participated in two television series. However, there is no doubt that it was the movie that gave him a strong foothold in the business Footloose turned him an icon for teen audiences, which...

Albert Brooks Claims He Came Up With The Format For Saturday Night Live
Image
As the old saying goes, "Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan." NBC's "Saturday Night Live," a highly successful show that's been around so long it can accurately be labeled an institution, is no exception to that axiom. While it feels a little absurd to attribute the success of SNL to any single person given how many comedians and celebrities have greatly contributed to its longevity, it's generally presumed that creator Lorne Michaels is the show's guru.

However, Michaels did not come up with the concept for SNL out of whole cloth, at least not according to actor/writer/director Albert Brooks. Brooks was a frequent contributor to SNL (or "NBC's Saturday Night" as it was called during the first and second season), providing the show with a series of short films.

Yet, allegedly, Brooks was highly instrumental in the development of what the show became, thanks...

Steven Spielberg Almost Had Tim Burton Direct The Twisted Holiday Classic Gremlins
Image
Fans of Joe Dante's 1984 Christmas horror comedy film "Gremlins" may know that screenwriter Chris Columbus initially wrote the script as a mere writing sample. The script was so elaborate — and so horrifying — that it wasn't meant to be even possible. The website CutPrintFilm published an oral history of "Gremlins" in 2016, and a lot of the film's behind-the-scenes details were revisited. The story goes that Columbus wrote a straight-up horror movie that had a lot more violence and had Gizmo — the adorable central mogwai — transformed into the murderous gremlin, Stripe.

A behind-the-scenes feature on the 2002 DVD special edition of "Gremlins" revealed that Steven Spielberg had somehow got his hands on the script, and had expressed interest in actually making it. Spielberg changed a few things about it, however, to make it less horror-forward. Notably, Gizmo was to stay cuddly and marketable throughout, and the character of Lynn Peltzer (Frances Lee McCain...

How A Gremlins 2 Deleted Scene Directly Tackles One Of Cinema's Great Controversies
Image
Some young people look at various tweets, articles, and posts from cinephiles and film historians like myself advocating for proper film preservation and scoff, thinking that, in this brave new world of instant access streaming services and online downloads, the entire history of cinema is at our fingertips and so we shouldn't be complaining.

Of course, this attitude is not only grossly misinformed given modern cinema's unsustainable status quo, but potentially dangerous, at least when it comes to keeping the history of what is still the most preeminent artistic medium of our lifetime alive. If historians are particularly passionate about the issue, it's in part because we're aware of similar threats that menaced film preservation in the past.

One of those threats emerged in the mid-'80s, when media mogul Ted Turner made the rather glib decision to "colorize" classic black-and-white films for television broadcast. The pushback from filmmakers, critics,...

‘End of the Road’ Review: Highway to Hokey Hillbilly Hell
Image
“Nobody messes with my family!” shouts Queen Latifah, aiming a revolver at baddies during a late moment in “End of the Road.” It is one of several points in this Netflix thriller where the blatancy of undiluted cliché has an effect rather more comical than intended. Taking a brisk route from the pedestrian to the preposterous, Millicent Shelton’s slick but silly film diminishes its social-commentary edge by painting an African American family’s cross-country trip in cartoonishly broad terms, imperiled by crazy and/or criminal “crackers” at every junction.

Director and cast do their best — well, maybe not their best, but their competent professional duty — with a formulaic, contrived screenplay. Still, the results do no one much credit, landing closer to overripe cheese than taut suspense, or even guilty-pleasure terrain. “End” launches on the streamer Sept. 9.

Scream 4K
Image
Nobody did better with horror franchises than Wes Craven, who reinvigorated the genre in this relentlessly bloody thriller. Its self-referential gimmick should have been exploited decades before: what if the teenagers in movies were like real teenagers that watch horror movies. . . and that must rely on their movie knowledge when confronted with R-rated carnage? 25 years later the show holds up well, at least until the final revelations. Kevin Williamson’s screenplay and Mark Irwin’s camerawork make Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and Rose McGowan the most attractive and intelligent horror scream queens since Peggy Cummins tried to kick some sense into Dana Andrews.

Gremlins 4K Ultra HD
The exclusive 4K Ultra-hd club welcomes a worthy new member, Joe Dante’s evergreen horror comedy (and Christmas delight) about a cute furry critter and its 2nd-generation horde of scaly, impish demons. These aren’t Gremlins from the Kremlin, but homegrown domestic terrorist monsters, and Dante contrasts their killer antics with a sentimental parody of small town America. No CGI … You will believe that the animatronic rascals can multiply like rabbits, break dance, and run amuck!

‘Ideal Home’ Review
Stars: Steve Coogan, Paul Rudd, Jack Gore, Kate Walsh, Alison Pill, Jake McDorman, Lora Martinez-Cunningham, Frances Lee McCain | Written and Directed by Andrew Fleming

Flamboyant TV chef Erasmus Brumble (Coogan) along with his director and long-term partner Paul (Rudd), are happy going through life playing as hard as they work. But suddenly they have to decide whether to grow-up or continue down their well-trodden path, when Erasmus’s estranged grandson, Bill (played by Jack Gore), unexpectedly turns up at their door, after his father is taken away to serve time in prison. Having another mouth to feed can always come with its strains, but the couple’s fears that they are not yet cut out to be devoted parents become apparent very quickly, with their lavish social lifestyle getting in the way of their duties as responsible guardians. As unsuited as this small family may initially seem, the loving bond...

Footloose's Elizabeth Gorcey Claims an Actress 'Lost Their Virginity' While Making the 1984 Hit
Footloose (1984)
Looks like it got a little loose on the Footloose set.

Former actress Elizabeth Gorcey, who played Wendy Jo in the hit 1984 movie, revealed in a recent interview that one of the actresses on the film lost their virginity during filming.

“I can’t give names, but somebody lost their virginity on set. Not myself! But one of the other actresses,” Gorcey told Fox News.

Gorcey was one of five actresses on the main cast, with Lori Singer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dianne Wiest and Frances Lee McCain rounding out the list.

Joe Dante Looks Back at Gremlins: The Movie that Launched His Career, Forever Changed Pop Culture and Challenged the MPAA
[A variation of this interview appeared in the December 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine] Released more than 30 years ago, Joe Dante’s Gremlins has left an indelible mark on both the horror genre and the entertainment world as a whole. The movie was a true rarity at the time, masterfully blending a heartwarming holiday story with a cautionary tale of what happens when you let nature run amok, Gremlins has become a true classic film that continues to impact new generations of fans.

At the time he came onto Gremlins, Dante had mostly independent projects under his belt, making the project a huge leap for him as a filmmaker. In fact, when he was first approached to direct Gremlins, he thought it was a mistake after receiving Chris Columbus’ initial spec script in the mail one day unexpectedly. “Chris had written Gremlins initially as a spec script and it was intended to be the first, low-budget horror movie out of Amblin Entertainment. I remember...

Interview: Zach Galligan Reflects on Gremlins of Christmas Past
[Originally published in the December 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine] A little over thirty years ago, an inventor named Randall Peltzer walked into a tucked away antique shop in Chinatown in search of a memorable present for his son, Billy. Amidst the store’s candlelit relics, Randall discovered a cute critter known as a Mogwai. Against the owner’s wishes, he bought the Mogwai and later named him Gizmo, bringing him home to become a part of the family.

When Billy unwrapped Gizmo in the glow of the fireplace’s flickering flames, he became fast friends with the furry brown-and-white creature. Gizmo provided escapism to Billy, an aspiring cartoonist working at the local bank to help support his mom and dad. But the creature would unintentionally unleash manic mayhem on the tiny town of Kingston Falls, leading to a Christmas Eve nobody would forget… if they survived.

The star of the dark comedy creature feature, Zach Galligan, chatted with us...

The Future is Back: Revisiting ‘Back to the Future’
“Great Scott, Marty, it’s been thirty years…..!!”

On July 3rd 1985, Robert Zemeckis’ Back To The Future split movie screens wide open with a time travel action adventure that’s yet to be equalled. A film’s film if you will, and a movie so complete in its box ticking it’s almost unbearable. One is inclined to wax complimentary about this masterpiece in hushed tones given the current onslaught of mostly tepid and utterly pointless remakes and reimaginings. One can also only hope that the hacks that some day decide upon remaking this most sacred of cows will find themselves mysteriously crammed into a DeLorian one dark and stormy night and swiftly eighty eighted back to a time where they can do no harm.

So, where to start with a movie this good? Everywhere you look there’s treasure in abundance. Blessed with a phenomenal cast, production and score,...

What Michael J Fox Really Thought Of The DeLorean
In a world where the Jurassic Park franchise churned out another installment, Arnold Schwarzenegger is playing the Terminator again, and the Star Wars saga is coming back with both the old and a new cast, might there be hope for more Back to the Future? The classic film featured time travel, a nutty professor and Michael J. Fox. It has a massive fan base and seems ripe for the same treatment, if not now then a decade from now. But even if you.re secretly holding out hope for a sequel of some sort, Fox doesn.t want you to hold your breath.  According to Radio Times, Fox joined fellow cast mates, such as Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Claudia Wells, Marc McClure, Frances Lee McCain, James Tolkan, Donald Fullilove and Harry Waters Jr., for a Back to the Future retrospective at London Film & Comic-Con this past weekend. While reflecting on...

Class Disparities and Prostitution Tackled in Early Female Director's Drama
Pioneering woman director Lois Weber socially conscious drama 'Shoes' among Library of Congress' Packard Theater movies (photo: Mary MacLaren in 'Shoes') In February 2015, National Film Registry titles will be showcased at the Library of Congress' Packard Campus Theater – aka the Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation – in Culpeper, Virginia. These range from pioneering woman director Lois Weber's socially conscious 1916 drama Shoes to Robert Zemeckis' 1985 blockbuster Back to the Future. Another Packard Theater highlight next month is Sam Peckinpah's ultra-violent Western The Wild Bunch (1969), starring William Holden and Ernest Borgnine. Also, Howard Hawks' "anti-High Noon" Western Rio Bravo (1959), toplining John Wayne and Dean Martin. And George Cukor's costly remake of A Star Is Born (1954), featuring Academy Award nominees Judy Garland and James Mason in the old Janet Gaynor and Fredric March roles. There's more: Jeff Bridges delivers a colorful performance in...

Zach Galligan and Howie Mandel in Gremlins (1984)
30 years since Gremlins: Stars of the Christmas cult classic then and now
Zach Galligan and Howie Mandel in Gremlins (1984)
Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without a heavily tinseled tree, a tipple before midday and Gremlins on the telly at some point during the day.

The Joe Dante-directed black cult comedy sees protagonist Billy Peltzer being gifted with Gizmo, a cute furry Mogwai discovered by his inventor father in a mysterious Chinatown antique store.

Of course the creature comes with three special instructions which, if not adhered to, result in the spawning of grizzly Gremlins hell-bent on havoc.

The Steven Spielberg-produced movie - which is

currently being fast-tracked by Warner Bros for a remake - celebrated its 30th anniversary earlier this year, and here's what the main cast members got up to after the movie's success:

1. Zach Galligan

Zach Galligan plays William 'Billy' Peltzer who becomes enthralled by his unusual Christmas gift - yet careless with the three golden Gizmo rules.

Galligan's notable film roles following the success...

80s Flashback: Remembering the First ‘Gremlins’ Movie
If there was one great gift the 80s gave us, it was the gift of the B-flick, horror movie. Malicious villains like Freddy Krueger and Jason were born in Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th. Both of these films kept children awake at night with nightmares of gruesome deaths. Parents regretted not heeding the “R” rating that drove those children into their beds. I still remember my dad waking up with bruises left from me kicking him in the back. Shame on him for allowing this five-year old kid to watch Freddy eviscerate everyone on Elm Street. The Gremlins was one movie that received acclaim during this era of low-budget horror. The story revolved around a young boy who received a pet Mogwai, named Gizmo, as a gift. However, much like the Amazing Spider-Man, with great Mogwai comes great responsibility. When two rules are broken, all hell breaks...

Footloose - Blu-ray Review
Put on your dancing shoes, that is unless it.s been banned in your small town. Footloose boogies onto Blu-ray with some nice new special features, but an uneven transfer. The film that made Kevin Bacon some bacon is still fun, but also features a thoughtful performance from a supporting member. The Reverend Shaw Moore (John Lithgow) is in the pulpit Sunday preaching against the evils of a sinful life with his wife Vi (Dianne Wiest) sitting approvingly in the choir. One of his new parishioners is Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon) who is not a local but moved there with his mom (Frances Lee McCain) from the big city of Chicago. The town doesn.t take kindly to his...
