You can love or hate a movie, or character, but it's difficult to proclaim any given story, performance, actor, director, etc., the best or worst, your most or least favored, ever, etc. Superlatives are only correctly used for one of anything - and if you discover one anew, it must surpass all others if it is truly a superlative.
Well, honestly, I have several after watching this picture - and all with regard to the Midkiff character Johnny/Jake.
Hands down, he's the MOST unsympathetic, dull, insipid, uncharismatic character I've EVER viewed.
He evokes the LEAST amount of empathy or trace of caring in any regard for what happens to him, or for the trials he might endure as a result of his duplicity. There is no way a character could be more annoying.
The two female leads are both engaging, sympathetic (for the most part), and certainly a pleasure to view. They were both screwed-up in their own ways, but who in this movie genre isn't? And the conclusion brought proper resolution.
(Whenever I watch a film with a character very annoying, like Midkiff's here, I wish the director would have hired an actor resembling Moe from the Three Stooges - and that "Moe" would proceed to bash him with a mallet, poke him in the eyes, and give him hard slaps, the way he would to Curly and Larry.)

This is a great story about two best friends and One slimeball guy who goes back and forth with their love It is one good movie and Lisa Rinna and Gail O'Grady portray their roles very well. This is one of those Lifetime original movies and it was Terrific I recommended it to some friends and they all loved it just like I did GREAT MOVIE catch it on lifetime sometime It's a winner And thumbs up to Gail and Lisa for their great performances Also the unfaithful Husband Did a great job too hope he is not like Johnnie in real life.
I thought this movie was good. I don't normally watch dramas like this one but I thought I would give it a shot! This movie was like any other movie where you have a married couple going through some marital issues. (Spoiler) The guy finds another woman, falls in love in love with her and divorces his soon-to-be ex-wife. However, the two women start to become close friends when they take swimming lessons together. The guy of course lies to the younger looking lady and ends up losing her as well! It kind of surprised me to see Charlotte Rae from the Facts of Life and Different Strokes shows making a cameo! I like the way it ended when the swimming instructor and the student were seen running towards the ocean to get away from it all!
has a dual role as a dependent housewife stuck in a relationship with Dale Midkiff, who becomes bored, and strays. Lisa Rinna is the other woman, and does quite well, although it is a bit hard to imagine her as a Ph.D.
Without spoiling the story I will just say that this a movie worth watching. Gail O'Grady used to play the bimbo parts in NYPD blue, but I now have to update my movies with her as another favorite.
She plays a swimming instructor to senior citizens, who is excellent at her job, but has emotional problems within her own life (Sally Kirkland plays her flighty, alcoholic mother). She has failed to value herself as a person, putting all her energy into the marriage with Midkiff.
While the direction is a bit flawed, the story line is believable, and O'Grady's performance is worth seeing. There is a surprise ending.

If you like swimming or hate it, this is the film for you. There are lots of funny and enjoyable Senior Citizen's swimming all around and especially a face from the past, Charlotte Rae,(Betsy) "Facts of Life",'79 TV Series, who gives Gail O'Grady,(Susan Miller),"NYPD Blue,'93 TV Series, lots of smiles and support. Susan and Johnny Miller/Jake, are husband and wife and were childhood sweethearts, the marriage is going sour and Donna Hanover (Psychologist)who adds to the problems with her fear of the water and the hots for Susan's husband Johnny/Jake. This is a very enjoyable film and worthwhile viewing. It was great seeing Charlotte Rae, who was a great star in "FACTS OF LIFE" !
