This 1943 Film Was Douglas Sirk’s Escape Story Until MGM Turned It Into Glittery Propaganda
Image
Douglas Sirk is one of the most prominent filmmakers of the 1940s and 50s, long before major Hollywood studios took charge of the industry. Even before diversity was a thing, Sirk brought a unique immigrant value to his otherwise melodramatic movies after he left his homeland, Germany, to start a new career in America.

Sirk’s first major Hollywood production was the World War II movie Hitler’s Madman, based on the real-life assassination of Nazi official Reinhard Heydrich and the ensuing massacre of Lidice. While Sirk had a different vision for the movie, MGM forced reshoots that turned it into propaganda, and here is what went down with Hitler’s Madman and Sirk’s career.

MGM turned Douglas Sirk’s Hitler’s Madman into a glittery propaganda

Douglas Sirk was born as Hans Detlef Sierck in Germany and rose to prominence during the 1930s with drama films he directed in his homeland.

The 15 Best World War II Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Since World War II began, it's been a prime subject for the film industry to mine. During the war, we were treated to endless propaganda films, designed to rally both the troops and the folks back on the home front, reassuring them that victory was in sight (even when at that time it was seriously in doubt). Since then, World War II movies have romanticized the conflict, shown the gritty truth of combat, and attempted to depict under-explored perspectives.

During the Vietnam War, World War II films even offered a prime opportunity to speak critically about the conflict during a political climate that was anything but receptive to criticism. Whether they were made during the war or decades later, however, World War II films run across a spectrum of different genres, from out-and-out action to heartbreaking drama, romance, and even comedy.

Here are some of the very best World War II movies.

Every Movie Coming to HBO Max in October
Image
It still feels weird not calling it HBO Max. Calling the streaming service Max may never feel normal as it doesn't connotate anything special. Max does have good movies, though make no mistake there. This list definitely has horror movies in mind as we enter into the spookiest of seasons. They range from fun slashers to creepier, more well-crafted films with good themes.

So, with that in mind, shall we take a look at the best movies coming to Max in October 2023?

Friday the 13th (2009) - Oct. 1

In the suite of classic horror movie remakes, Friday the 13th sits... somewhere in the middle of the good section. That being said, it has all the elements that make one of these movies. There are unholy amounts of nudity (more than any movie in the franchise), dumb characters who exist to die, and many memorable kills. With all that said, it seems...

Henry Cavill Shares New Look At Man From Uncle Director Reunion Movie
Image
Nearly two months after filming kicked off, Henry Cavill has shared a new look from The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. The upcoming film marks a reunion between Cavill and director Guy Ritchie, with the two having previously worked together on the similar period genre thriller The Man From Uncle, itself an adaptation of the '60s TV show of the same name. Though a box office bomb at the time of its release, the 2015 film has since garnered a cult following and led to calls for a sequel.

After having shown the first behind-the-scenes image from the action spy movie a couple of weeks back, Henry Cavill has taken to Instagram to share a new The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare look.

Cillian Murphy is an Irish actor who first started appearing on-screen in 1997, and his filmography is filled with critically acclaimed TV and movie performances. Although Murphy is often reserved and private about his life, the actor is quite popular after he took on series of impressive roles - ranging from horrible, evil characters to heroic figures. Murphy can shout and be bombastic and then shrink down and produce internal acting moments that see him using just his facial expressions and mannerisms to express an array of emotions.

Since 1997 Murphy has been working steadily, playing parts in movies, television, and even some music videos. He has struck up lasting relationships with some of the most talented directors in Hollywood, including Danny Boyle and Christopher Nolan. Murphy’s filmography includes sci-fi, influential horror, mind-bending blockbuster fare, and historical television. Despite the critical acclaim of many of his movies, Murphy only has one...

The Horror of the Rich Drives Sean Ellis’ Supernatural ‘Eight for Silver’ at Camerimage
Image
Horror has many dimensions still to be explored, says Dp, director and writer Sean Ellis in describing his film screening in the Camerimage Film Festival’s main competition, “Eight for Silver.”

A dark and brooding story of evil’s long tail, the film is Ellis’ fifth feature since an impressive debut with the surreal “Cashback” in 2006 and follows his Prague-shot true-story thriller “Anthropoid,” a remarkably detailed and accurate account of the most successful assassination plot of World War II against a top Nazi commander, Reinhard Heydrich.

“Eight for Silver” opens theatrically in the U.S. next spring or summer and is also set in the past, on a French country estate where a different kind of overlord tempts fate with evil deeds. But in this case the veil of time allows for an immersive world in which curses, monsters and possession come around to ensure a terrifying dose of karmic payback.

Cedric Jimenez to Direct Anti-Terrorism Investigation Thriller ‘November’ Starring Jean Dujardin (Exclusive)
Image
Cedric Jimenez, the French director of “The Connection,” the Rosamund Pike-starrer “HHhH” and “Bac Nord,” will next be directing “November,” an action-packed thriller set against the backdrop of the Paris terror attacks of 2015 with a prestigious cast led by Oscar-winning Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”), Anais Demoustier (“Alice and The Mayor”) and Sandrine Kiberlain (“In Safe Hands”).

Written by Olivier Demangel, the screenwriter of Mati Diop’s “Atlantics,” “November” unfolds during the five days following the attacks which shook Paris, and revolves around the sprawling investigation carried on by a highly-secretive police brigade called Sdat (anti-terrorist sub-directorate) to track down the terrorists – including the two masterminds — behind the attacks.

Budgeted at $20 million, “November” is produced by Hugo Selignac at Chi-Fou-Mi Films, who had teamed with Jimenez on “Bac Nord,” and Mathias Rubin at Recifilms. Studiocanal is co-producing and is handling French distribution, as well as international sales on the film,...

‘The Seventh Function of Language’ Being Adapted as Feature Film (Exclusive)
Image
“The Seventh Function of Language,” a novel by French author Laurent Binet, is getting the feature film treatment. Uri Singer, the CEO of TaleFlick, a production company that specializes in adapting books into movies and TV shows, has obtained screen rights to the popular work of fiction.

Singer will produce “The Seventh Function of Language” with Midnight Road Entertainment’s Vincent Sieber, who previously produced “The Chronicles of Narnia.”

The New York Times described Binet’s novel as being “at once a buddy-cop plot, a fish-out-of-water comedy and a spy thriller.” A whodunit set against the backdrop of 1980s France, “The Seventh Function of Language” centers on a literary critic Roland Barthes, who gets hit by a laundry van and dies after having lunch with the presidential candidate François Mitterand. But as the world mourns his death, one question arises: What if it wasn’t an accident at all?

Binet’s first novel,...

Holocaust
This four part, eight hour miniseries turns the fate of a family of German Jews into a sprawling drama that covers all the bases of the holocaust horror. It was strong stuff and a big Emmy winner, boosting the careers of James Woods and Michael Moriarty. His warped charisma as a psychotic Nazi is so good that he’s consistently more interesting than the courageous victims. As for Meryl Streep, she became an instant star — everybody remembered her from this. Although it’s been called ‘The Holocaust for Dummies,’ it’s a quality show. Looking from today’s perspective, after forty years of Political Correctness adjustments, I’m not sure any two viewers will react in quite the same way.

Roman Polanski Turns to France and Italy to Back His New Film
Nach einer wahren Geschichte (2017)
He’s been expelled from the Academy, and his last film, “Based on a True Story,” flopped at the box office. But the recent announcement of Roman Polanski’s new movie offers proof that, even after the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the birth of the #MeToo movement, the controversial director can still muster support – at least, in places where #MeToo has been slow to take hold.

The Oscar-winning director, who pleaded guilty to having sex with a minor in 1977 and has been a fugitive of U.S. justice ever since, has managed to raise about €22 million ($25.3 million) for his long-gestating passion project, “J’Accuse,” from backers in France and Italy – two countries where #MeToo has been heavily criticized. (Polanski himself has called the movement “collective hysteria.”) “J’Accuse” now ranks among the biggest-budgeted local movies slated for either 2019 or 2020 in either territory.

Polanski has been able to recruit well-established players and talent for the film,...

‘Anthropoid’: Why It Took 15 Years to Bring an Unbelievable World War II Story to the Big Screen
Image
There are no happy endings in Sean Ellis’ World War II drama “Anthropoid.” But should a new plan to honor the heroes portrayed within the new war drama pan out, the true story’s gruesome history might be forever altered in an unexpectedly positive way.

Ellis’ latest film follows the true story of Czechoslovakian resistance fighters Josef Gabčík (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Jamie Dornan), who undertook the nearly impossible mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich in Prague in 1942. The plan ultimately resulted in the deaths of Kubiš, Gabčík and five other Czechoslovakian fighters — and while Heydrich didn’t die immediately as planned, he did succumb to his injuries soon after, altering the course of the war forever — and while the soldiers have long been national heroes, over seven decades have passed without a proper burial for their bodies.

Thanks to renewed interest in the unbelievable story of Operation Anthropoid,...

Kenneth Branagh
Branagh Repelled By Nazi Holocaust Planner
Kenneth Branagh
Actor Kenneth Branagh's most difficult role was playing Adolf Hitler's "soulless" henchman Reinhard Heydrich in the new TV movie Conspiracy. Heydrich was the mastermind behind a 1942 meeting of top Nazis, which sealed the fate of the European Jewish population. This pivotal meeting is the subject of the new Home Box Office movie, which also stars Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. And Branagh admits that Heydrich was a real challenge for him and ultimately one of his most disturbing acting experiences. He says, "Heydrich was unique for the ferocity and the cruelty of what he did, and the ruthless efficiency with which he did. In my preparation I thoroughly researched him, but I found that when it came to playing him, the inner man seemed invisible. Our scriptwriter, Loring Mandel, tried to do a psychological profile of Heydrich, looking for elements of behavior that may not appeal but perhaps lend to understanding his character, whether it be hatred of parents, a childhood trauma, some physical or mental disability, something that might illuminate his motives. Nothing seemed to make conventional psychological sense. His utter lack of compassion, lack of pity, revealed a man who has a buried conscience. There is something purely evil about him that is absolutely repellent and I'll be very happy not to wear his uniform to play him ever again."...
