Netflix will keep sailing the high seas.

The streamer has given an early season three renewal to its live-action adaptation of One Piece, announcing the pickup at an annual celebration of Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga in Tokyo. The renewal comes several months ahead of the season two premiere, which is slated for 2026. That, incidentally, is much sooner than the season two renewal for One Piece, which came a couple weeks after the series premiere in 2023.

Additionally, Netflix announced that Ian Stokes will join Joe Tracz as co-showrunner on season three, which is set to begin filming later this year. Stokes wrote two episodes and was a co-executive producer of season one. Former co-showrunner Matt Owens departed the show in March; he and Tracz were co-showrunners on the second season, while Owens and Steven Maeda ran the first season.

The Writers Guild of America announced Friday that it has expelled two members, Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, for writing on their HBO miniseries “The Sympathizer” during the 2023 strike.

Park and McKellar co-created the seven-episode series, which starred Hoa Xuande and Robert Downey, Jr. and was based on the 2015 novel of the same name by writer Viet Thanh Nguyen. It aired in 2024. According to the guild, Park and McKellar did not appeal their expulsions.

Variety has reached out to representatives for Park, McKellar and HBO for comment.

Beta Film has sold historical epic “Rise of the Raven” to multiple territories ahead of its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Paramount Skydance on Monday announced a seven-year media rights agreement with Tko Group under which Paramount+ will become the exclusive home of all UFC events in the U.S. — pulling the mixed martial arts events from ESPN. Disney’s ESPN had secured a deal that, starting in 2019, featured the Mma promoter’s matchups on TV and pay-per-view in ESPN+.

The seven-year term, which begins in 2026, has an average annual value of $1.1 billion, with an overall value of $7.7 billion over that period.

The cult favorite Syfy/USA series Resident Alien wrapped up its run on Friday (August 8), but the show’s lead star, Alan Tudyk, has given hope for a potential revival somewhere down the line. The Golden Horse Film Project Promotion has selected 14 television series for its 2025 edition, headlined by an adaptation of Yang Shuang-zi’s U.S. National Book Award-winning novel “Taiwan Travelogue.”

Japanese screenwriter Yoshida Erika, known for her work on “Cherry Magic!,” is adapting “Taiwan Travelogue” for World Softest Productions. Producer Maehata Sachiko and Chang Chen-yu are developing the series, which examines colonial-era Taiwan through a romance between a Japanese writer and local interpreter in 1938.

Several projects represent international partnerships. Director Yang Chih-lin helms “Good Days” for Neverland Entertainment, with producer Holly Chan Yu-shan overseeing the Taiwan-Japan co-production about an office worker returning to her hometown.

Jackie Chan reenacted his role in Bruce Lee’s “Enter the Dragon” at Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival.

Chan played a small part in the iconic film. In the past, he admitted Lee accidentally hit him with a stick during a scene – but that didn’t stop him from completing the take.

“I’m no Superman. I am scared,” he admitted. “Before a stunt, I go: ‘Am I going to die this time’?”

During a masterclass at the Swiss fest, he talked about his beginnings.

“One Piece” is setting sail once again, with the live-action adaptation of the beloved manga and anime series getting an early Season 3 renewal at Netflix.

The news came out of the annual One Piece Day celebration on Tokyo, where it was also revealed that Ian Stokes would be joining Joe Tracz as co-showrunner on Season 3. Stokes was previously a co-executive producer on Season 1. Production on the third season will begin later this year in Cape Town, South Africa.

In 1969, the BBC scored a coup. The network tapped none other than Joan Crawford, one of the largest (or larger-than-life) film legends to narrate a documentary — which the U.K.’s BBC Four is now unearthing on August 14 and 15 — about the largest legend of them all: Greta Garbo. Both stars had been under contract at MGM back in the ’20s and ’30s, during the heights of the studio system as well as that patricular studio. The two icons, however, barely crossed paths.

Garbo — an infamous recluse until her dying day — didn’t socialize with her fellow actors. Personal appearances were off the table and, even though she co-starred with Crawford in 1932’s Oscar-winning “Grand Hotel,” the two didn’t share any scenes. MGM actually had to composite a cast photo to make it appear like Garbo was ever in the room with more people than absolutely necessary:

That’s how we felt after watching the premiere of Outlander‘s prequel, Blood of My Blood, which got underway Friday. The spinoff’s first two episodes introduced us to Jamie’s parents, Ellen and Brian, and Claire’s parents, Julia and Henry. By the end of the first hour, via the wonder of time-travel, all four of them exist in the 18th century. The ripple effects of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike continue. On Friday, August 8, the WGA announced that Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar had been expelled from the union for writing the HBO limited series, “The Sympathizer,” while their fellow writers were picketing. This is not the first discipline action from the union in regard to the strike. Reportedly seven writers have been docked for violations.

The historic 148-day strike took up several months of 2023 — mostly simultaneously with the SAG-AFTRA strike — and resulted in a new contractural agreement between the writers and studios that increased wages, set standards for writers’ rooms, and included provisions for streaming residuals and framework for AI regulations. It had a significant impact on the Los Angeles economy, as well as the film industry at large, as studio lots sat dormant and theaters, networks, and streamers felt shockwaves in their release pipeline.

NBC‘s summer disaster docuseries Survival Mode goes beyond the attention-grabbing headlines and straight to the heart of the matter. Over nine episodes, NBC News crews interview ordinary folks, first responders, and loved ones who persevered in the face of utter tragedies — some caused by Mother Nature, some man-made (Amtrak 501 derailment on July 28). The upcoming August 11 episode on the Fort Worth Pileup is a bit of both. NBC has announced that the 51st season of “Saturday Night Live” will hit the airwaves October 4, a date that is still nearly two months into the future. Meanwhile, its been about three months since “SNL” has graced us with a new set of hilarious(-to-mid) sketches, and last season was one of the series’ most eventful, since it was the 50th lap for the pop culture staple. During its half-centennial run, there was even a movie — about but unaffiliated to the series — about the making of its first episode.

The whole 50th ballyhoo led up to an all-star three-plus hour anniversary show that premiered Sunday (naturally), February 16. The audience was like an Oscar or Emmy night roster: Cher, Robert De Niro, Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, Zach Galifianakis, Jack Nicholson, Ayo Edebiri, Steve Martin, and Emma Stone, among many more. Meryl Streep appeared in her very first “SNL” sketch, for heaven’s sake.

With the third season of The Gilded Age ending this Sunday, and the third Downton Abbey movie hitting theaters next month, we couldn’t help but wonder… when the heck are these two Julian Fellowes-created franchises finally going to collide?

It’s a question we’ve been asking since The Gilded Age first premiered in 2022, but now that Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) has married into British nobility, the time feels more appropriate than ever. Come on, who didn’t get Downton vibes from the Duke’s house?
