Netflix will keep sailing the high seas.
The streamer has given an early season three renewal to its live-action adaptation of One Piece, announcing the pickup at an annual celebration of Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga in Tokyo. The renewal comes several months ahead of the season two premiere, which is slated for 2026. That, incidentally, is much sooner than the season two renewal for One Piece, which came a couple weeks after the series premiere in 2023.
Additionally, Netflix announced that Ian Stokes will join Joe Tracz as co-showrunner on season three, which is set to begin filming later this year. Stokes wrote two episodes and was a co-executive producer of season one. Former co-showrunner Matt Owens departed the show in March; he and Tracz were co-showrunners on the second season, while Owens and Steven Maeda ran the first season.

On Friday, August 8, the Sense and Sensibility actress, 66, spoke at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, where she was honored with the Leopard Club Award. Thompson recalled how the Potus asked her out the same day she finalized her divorce from Kenneth Branagh. As she recounted, Thompson was in a trailer on the set of the 1998 film Primary Colors when she answered a phone call. It was none other than the business mogul, 79, who simply said, according to the actress, “Hello, this is Donald Trump.” “I thought it was a joke and asked, ‘How can I help you?’ Maybe he needed directions from someone,” she explained, per The Telegraph. “Then he said: ‘I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.

The cast and creators of The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball stopped by TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine’s studio at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about the new season, which revives The Amazing World of Gumball. (Note: This interview took place days before the premiere of the first 20 episodes of the new season on Hulu.) The show’s creator, Ben Bocquelet, was joined by the three new voice stars of the show — Alkaio Thiele, Hero Hunter, and Kinza Syed Khan — along with executive producers and directors Erik Fountain and Matt Layzell. The trio of pint-sized newcomers revealed what they enjoy most about voicing their characters, Gumball, Darwin, and Anais Watterson, respectively. “I love how crazy and off-the-wall Gumball is. You never know what’s going to happen next. The next line could be said in some weird voice, and now I get to do that voice. The lines are ridiculous and unhinged,...

Stephen A. Smith addressed a possible presidential run with Bill Maher on Real Time With Bill Maher. On Friday, Aug. 8, ESPN‘s First Take host appeared on the late-night show, during which he doubled down on “leav[ing] the door open” to a bold political bid in 2028. The NBA analyst confessed that he “can’t imagine” running for president. However, he acknowledged it is still a “possible” option for him. “Listen, life is good, man. I leave the door open,” he told Maher. “I can’t imagine myself doing it, but I haven’t ruled it out because I’m disgusted with what I’m seeing on the left.” Smith continued, “I look at the national voice for the Democratic Party. It is non-existent. As far I’m concerned, a damn construction worker could win the Democratic nomination right now, as bad as it is for the Democratic party. They better get their act together.

“I can’t say anything” about Puppet Spock, Ethan Peck says of the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 episode. Yes, the most fun show on television is going to have a puppet episode in its penultimate season (the third is currently airing). And while Peck can’t say anything specific, he did tell TV Insider his reaction upon hearing about this episode. “‘What? Are you serious? That sounds totally insane. Are we actually going to do that?’ And that was the same feeling I had when we did the musical episode,” he admits. “I don’t see a lot of shows that take swings quite like that, big genre swings like that. So when it first started happening, it seemed like it would just be a rumor, it would never come to fruition. And when we heard about this, we were like, ‘No, come on. Really? That’s just crazy.

Last dinner together before our oldest heads back to college and our second is about to leave home for her freshman year,” Joanna, 47, shared in the caption. “Thankful for the group hug and all the puppies to help me work through my wide range of emotions. The angel Castiel might have rusty people skills, a stoic demeanor, and deadpan sarcasm, but Misha Collins, the human actor behind Supernatural‘s forever third wheel, is charming and full of stories. It’s a natural fit, then, that Collins has created a one-man show, It Seemed Like A Good Idea at the Time, which he tours around the country separate from the Spn conventions he does with costars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. Stops this year for A Good Idea include Oklahoma City, Austin, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, and Nashville. The 90-minute, alcohol-friendly evening is described as having “topics more suited to a therapist’s sofa than a public stage.” A warning: There might be more than a few d–k jokes. “I love telling these very personal stories that bring the audience into some real difficult, emotional terrain, while also having them belly laugh — and they laugh a lot,...

The White Lotus star Sam Nivola boldly suggested that old Hollywood stars with plastic surgery are stealing roles from hopeful young actors. During an interview with Variety published on Aug. 7, the actor behind Lochlan Ratliff in Season 3 of HBO‘s mystery-comedy-drama series, opened up about the state of acting. He bluntly pointed out that up-and-coming talent is having a difficult time breakout out in an industry riddled with cosmetic procedures allowing people to look decades younger. “The old movie stars are getting plastic surgery, and they’re looking younger and they’re staying young,” Nivola, 21, told the publication. “You have these really old people playing young roles. And it’s not giving any space for the young’uns to move in and make a name for themselves.” He added, “With all due respect to those people, one day they won’t be here anymore, literally. And they will have to create new stars.

Hope surfaced that The Bold and the Beautiful‘s Liam (Scott Clifton) wasn’t going to succumb to his incurable illness when his physician, Dr. Grace Buckingham (Cassandra Creech), started acting suspicious. What was Grace hiding? Quite a bit, it turned out. Liam wasn’t ill after all. Grace lied to him that he was dying. The question remained, though: Why would she be untruthful about something so important? The answer was found in a mother’s deep devotion to her darling daughters. Grace may lose her medical license but Creech has earned TV Insider’s Performer of the Week honors for making us feel empathy for Grace, despite her wicked ways. B&b tapped into the history of the Buckingham family, specifically Reese’s (Wayne Brady) gambling debts, to explain why Grace did what she did. She lied to Bill Spencer (Don Diamont), Liam’s dad, that a cool one...

Chan played a small part in the iconic film. In the past, he admitted Lee accidentally hit him with a stick during a scene – but that didn’t stop him from completing the take.

In 1969, the BBC scored a coup. The network tapped none other than Joan Crawford, one of the largest (or larger-than-life) film legends to narrate a documentary — which the U.K.’s BBC Four is now unearthing on August 14 and 15 — about the largest legend of them all: Greta Garbo. Both stars had been under contract at MGM back in the ’20s and ’30s, during the heights of the studio system as well as that patricular studio. The two icons, however, barely crossed paths.
Garbo — an infamous recluse until her dying day — didn’t socialize with her fellow actors. Personal appearances were off the table and, even though she co-starred with Crawford in 1932’s Oscar-winning “Grand Hotel,” the two didn’t share any scenes. MGM actually had to composite a cast photo to make it appear like Garbo was ever in the room with more people than absolutely necessary:

Can everyone time-travel except us?!
That’s how we felt after watching the premiere of Outlander‘s prequel, Blood of My Blood, which got underway Friday. The spinoff’s first two episodes introduced us to Jamie’s parents, Ellen and Brian, and Claire’s parents, Julia and Henry. By the end of the first hour, via the wonder of time-travel, all four of them exist in the 18th century. (For details on the how and why, make sure to check out the premiere recap, which covers Episodes 1 and 2.)

The ripple effects of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike continue. On Friday, August 8, the WGA announced that Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar had been expelled from the union for writing the HBO limited series, “The Sympathizer,” while their fellow writers were picketing. This is not the first discipline action from the union in regard to the strike. Reportedly seven writers have been docked for violations.
The historic 148-day strike took up several months of 2023 — mostly simultaneously with the SAG-AFTRA strike — and resulted in a new contractural agreement between the writers and studios that increased wages, set standards for writers’ rooms, and included provisions for streaming residuals and framework for AI regulations. It had a significant impact on the Los Angeles economy, as well as the film industry at large, as studio lots sat dormant and theaters, networks, and streamers felt shockwaves in their release pipeline.

NBC‘s summer disaster docuseries Survival Mode goes beyond the attention-grabbing headlines and straight to the heart of the matter. Over nine episodes, NBC News crews interview ordinary folks, first responders, and loved ones who persevered in the face of utter tragedies — some caused by Mother Nature, some man-made (Amtrak 501 derailment on July 28). The upcoming August 11 episode on the Fort Worth Pileup is a bit of both. In February 2021 in Fort Worth, Texas, an unusually chilly winter freeze brought black ice onto a highway during a pre-dawn commute that resulted in a 133-car pile-up, six fatalities, and at least 65 injuries. “Everyone coming down the hill and around this turn [on the highway] couldn’t see it until it was too late,” showrunner Chris Cassel explains. “By the time the sun rose, it was just a scene of incredible devastation.” Telling their stories are survivors including Destiny, a young woman who was gravely ...

NBC has announced that the 51st season of “Saturday Night Live” will hit the airwaves October 4, a date that is still nearly two months into the future. Meanwhile, its been about three months since “SNL” has graced us with a new set of hilarious(-to-mid) sketches, and last season was one of the series’ most eventful, since it was the 50th lap for the pop culture staple. During its half-centennial run, there was even a movie — about but unaffiliated to the series — about the making of its first episode.
The whole 50th ballyhoo led up to an all-star three-plus hour anniversary show that premiered Sunday (naturally), February 16. The audience was like an Oscar or Emmy night roster: Cher, Robert De Niro, Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, Zach Galifianakis, Jack Nicholson, Ayo Edebiri, Steve Martin, and Emma Stone, among many more. Meryl Streep appeared in her very first “SNL” sketch, for heaven’s sake.
