Stargate has always been unique in that it’s the rare case of a TV franchise that’s become more memorable than the movie that inspired it. Indeed, mention Stargate, and most people will automatically think of the TV show and its spinoffs rather than the 1994 film.

Per JoBlo, the acclaimed director discussed the long-awaited project during San Diego Comic-Con. "The problem there is, it's a very, very difficult IP. Many popular sci-fi series from the 2000s focused on character-driven narratives rather than relying on special effects. The success of these series can be attributed to relatable characters and realistic storylines rooted in humanity. The genre saw a shift towards more relatable storytelling, creating beloved characters and memorable stories that resonated with audiences.

The 2000s produced gems within the sci-fi genre and the best TV series of this era focused heavily on character's stories. For many TV shows today, advanced technology and massive budgets allow creators to rely on special effects to carry the series along. However, the minimal use of special effects in the 2000s meant prioritizing a character-driven narrative instead. Many TV series creators were also aware of the risk that comes with the sci-fi genre. Delving too deep into a series' lore can become complicated and hard to follow, ultimately turning audiences away.

Don S. Davis, known for his role as General George Hammond, left Stargate Sg-1 after the seventh season due to health reasons, including diabetes and heart disease. Despite its popularity, attempts to revive the Stargate franchise have always fallen apart, making it difficult to replicate the chemistry of the original cast. Davis continued to make guest appearances as Hammond in seasons 8, 9, and 10 of Sg-1 and also appeared in Stargate: Atlantis. His final onscreen appearance was in the 2008 TV movie Continuum.

Don S. Davis' General Hammond was a key supporting player on Stargate Sg-1 for the first seven seasons, but why did the actor decide to leave? Most TV shows based on hit movies are doomed to failure, and in recasting the main roles or chopping up the story to fit the demands of an episodic approach, they often fall short. Stargate Sg-1 is the rare instance where the franchise soared because it moved to TV.

The actors of Supernatural, including Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, and Richard Speight Jr., have showcased their directing skills throughout various seasons. Jensen Ackles has directed several episodes, such as "Weekend at Bobby's" and "Soul Survivor," allowing for a unique exploration of other characters and storylines. Richard Speight Jr.'s directorial debut, "Just My Imagination," was a memorable filler episode that earned a Hugo Awards nomination and highlighted character development.

With 327 episodes and 15 seasons under its belt, Supernatural has had many directors guide the actors over the years, and sometimes the actors have taken on this role too. Long-running directors, Bobby Singer, John F. Showalter, and Kim Manners, to name a few, led legendary episodes like "Bad Day At Black Rock," "Lazarus Rising," and "Slash Fiction." However, some of the show's leading stars have displayed their skills behind the camera too, some instances being for particularly vital episodes, such as "Soul Survivor" and "Despair.

The early 2000s were an exciting time when it came to science fiction television. Several shows carried over the weird and eclectic undertones of similar series from the '90s. However, the era upped the ante by including elements that rose from the digital revolution thanks to the internet and cell phones.

As a result, despite the ever-present thematic focus on space exploration, supernatural or extraterrestrial aspects and time travel, 2000s sci-fi also began concentrating on technology and cyberspace. Nevertheless, the additional inclusion of humor with darker nuances separates shows like Invader Zim and Doctor Who from their '90s counterparts.

Invader Zim (2001)

For a show that premiered on Nickelodeon in the '00s, Invader Zim was edgy and, more importantly, ahead of its time. This didn't take away from the traditional science fiction elements it explored, like conquering aliens and space travel.

Jonas Quinn was a big part of Stargate Sg-1 for exactly one season, so why was his stint so brief? 1994 sci-fi movie Stargate seemed primed to spawn sequels, but instead, its spinoff Sg-1 became one of the most popular sci-fi shows of the late '90s and early '00s. This switch worked for the best, considering the titular gateway opened up a wealth of storytelling possibilities for a series to explore. The show couldn't afford the VFX and scope of its big-screen predecessor, but thanks to the chemistry of the main cast - Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge and Michael Shanks - it built a devoted following.

Even when Stargate Sg-1 received spinoffs like Atlantis or Universe, it was hard to beat the original team. Like any long-running series, Sg-1 saw some big casting shakeups, including Anderson reducing the size of his role for the final two seasons.

An unproduced TV movie would have been a stronger ending for Stargate Sg-1's team. Stargate Sg-1 is by now arguably even more popular than the 1994 blockbuster that inspired it. Not only did it run for ten seasons, it also spawned several other shows, including Stargate: Atlantis - which introduced Jason Momoa's Ronon Dex - and the short-lived Universe. Considering how robust the Stargate TV saga once was, this makes the fact it has been trapped in limbo for over a decade all the stranger. While there are occasional reports of a possible revival of the brand, Stargate is currently no nearer to returning to the big or small screen.

In addition to Stargate Sg-1's ten seasons, it also received two straight-to-dvd movies: 2008's The Ark Of Truth and that same year's Continuum. While it wasn't planned that way, the latter ended up being something of a finale...

HBO's upcoming Dead Boy Detectives series has announced the directors who will be participating in the show. The Dead Boy Detectives originally appeared on-screen in Doom Patrol, where the detectives are two boys trying to solve supernatural mysteries. First created by Neil Gaiman, the comic version of the characters are ghosts returning from Hell in the wake of a cataclysmic event, only to remain on Earth to solve crimes together as private detectives due to watching too many detective movies. Though the boys only appear for a short time in Doom Patrol, they captured the attention of HBO executives and earned a show of their own.

Freeform has picked up a third and final season of “Motherland: Fort Salem,” the Disney-owned cable network announced Monday.

“Every time we get to dive back into the world of ‘Motherland: Ford Salem,’ it’s a pleasure and an honor,” series creator Eliot Laurence said in a statement. “I can’t wait to bring season three to the world. We plan to ramp up the insane stakes of the finale with an epic, scary, satisfying ride, all the while getting deeper into witch’s ancient origins.
