A mythical beast - a female wargamer! I got back into wargaming in the summer of 2011 after a very, very long break and haven't looked back since. I must admit that I seem to be more of a painter/collector than a gamer, but do hope to correct that at some point in the near future. My gaming interests span the ages, from the "Biblical" era all the way through to the far future. I enjoy games of all sizes, from a handful of figures up to major battles (see my megalomaniacally sized Choson Korean and Russian Seven Years War armies).

Finished - 28mm WW2 Papuans #2 and New Guinea Volunteer Rifles

Yes, they're all done. I finished painting the Papuans last night, and got the basing done on them and the NGVR today.

Papuan Infantry Battalion

New Guinea Volunteer Rifles

These chaps were an irregular force formed from white settlers in New Guinea at the start of the war. They were poorly equipped with old weapons and equipment, but did excellent work independently and alongside other Australian forces.

While the basing gunk was drying, I decided to assemble some of the MDF kits I'd bought recently:

I'll be adding Stucco effect to the adobe buildings tomorrow, using filler. Of course, I've been an idiot and glued the wooden posts and doors in already, which means I'll have to be more careful than I would otherwise.

I've also got all the metal figures bought recently prepped and washed. I think this weekend will

(Not Quite) Finished - 28mm WW2 Papuans

Almost there - just the vegetation to add to the bases, but as the long static grass I've ordered for tuft making hasn't arrived yet I decided to take some pics for you.

I did finish the highlighting on the white on Wednesday. Unfortunately, when I looked at them something seemed wrong - the off-white final highlight appeared to have totally covered the ivory first highlight making the contrast with the pale sand base far too stark. So i used a glaze/wash of off-white to tone the contrast down. But that then swamped the pale sand.

Oh well. I gave the figures a coat of Klear then when that had dried I used a slightly diluted mix of Vallejo grey and burnt umber wash (2:1) to shade the recesses. That recovered the situation quite nicely.

Last night I added the basing material - first a layer of acrylic filler to build up the level to match the figure bases. Once that had cured I stippled on some Vallejo dark mud which was dry-brushed once it had dried. Today I took them into work to give them a spray coat of matt varnish. I might need to respray the stretcher team tomorrow as there seem to be some glossy spots.

I might need to respray the stretcher team with matt varnish tomorrow as there seem to be some glossy spots - it was a little breezy outside so they must have been missed.

As you can see, I didn't bother with the eyes - I think they look fine as they are.

Wednesday Workbench 09 May

I've made good progress on the Papuans. In fact they are almost finished - just the whites and the steel of the machete left to paint.

I might get that done after I finish this post, leaving varnishing and basing for tomorrow and Friday evenings. It might just be the basing texture that gets done for now - I might order some very long (10mm) static grass and make up some tufts to add along with some scrub vegetation.

I have also primed some scatter terrain pieces for Gaslands.

Once the Papuans are finished, I may peint these up before moving onto the Aussies.
