Love With A Chance of Drowning - Worth the Read?

When I found a copy of  "Love with a Chance of Drowning" in our mailbox to read and review, it felt like Christmas!  I'd heard about this book from the author, Torre DeRoche, in a Facebook group that we're both a part of, Women Who Sail.  It's a group for women that are sailing or learning to sail, and it's a place to share our experiences, our questions, and our fears.  When Torre mentioned that she had written her true story about falling in love with a man who wanted to sail across the Pacific ocean, I was intrigued.  I've never been a fan of romance novels, but this sounded like much more.  Not only was this about cruising on a sailboat (that was good enough for me), but it was also about Torre's fear of the water and having to make a tough decision.  Torre could either face her fears and head into the ocean on a sailboat with her man (and surely die!) or watch him sail away without her.  I knew from the description of the book that Torre had chosen love over fear, but I wondered how things turned out.  Would she regret her decision, or would it be one of the best experiences of her life?

I immediately started enjoying the book, and Torre's style of writing made me feel like I knew her.  She has a great sense of humor, and her book was honest.  One of the first challenges Torre faced when taking a risk and living a lifestyle that is foreign to others happened before she ever left the dock!  Torre not only had to fend off her own negative thoughts about cruising ... but those of others.  I could totally relate to her experience.  In fact, I'm bracing myself for more of this as our departure date gets closer.  I guess it's just yet another of the challenges that we face when choosing an alternative way of life.

Facing her fears and living on a sailboat wasn't always easy for Torre, and she wrote about the difficulties that came with her decision.  Sometimes she loved cruising, and sometimes she didn't.  She also wrote about her clumsy boyfriend, and some of their embarrassing stories that made me laugh out loud (literally).  I'm sure we'll have our own share of embarrassing stories once we start cruising, and it was refreshing to read about such things.  Life shouldn't be taken so seriously.  That's what was so great about this book.

The book didn't end quite the way I thought it would, but that's because this is real life!  Without giving away too much, let me just say that I highly recommend this book.  Whether or not you're into sailing, you're sure to enjoy it.  I think Torre's story is not only a good read, but a source of inspiration. We all have fears, and sometimes they get in the way of our dreams.  Torre wasn't going to let her dream of a future with her new love be crushed by her fears.  Facing her fears changed Torre ... and her life.

Heck, Torre's life changed when she left her home in Australia (yep, I hear she's got one of those awesome Australian accents) to experience the United States (San Francisco).  She didn't really know anyone and didn't have a job when she first arrived.  That in itself takes guts!  It was in San Francisco that she met her new love.  That chance meeting led to sailing and this book.  I hear there's already a movie deal!  Just goes to show what's possible when we step outside of our safety net.

Need more info?  Here's the trailer for the book ...

Live On The Margin - A Review

When I heard that Pat Schulte was writing a book about how he's been generating income while living the dream of traveling the world, I was excited!  I'd already read his first book about sailing around the world without any sailing experience, Just Looking Out For Pirates, and I've been following his blog, Bumfuzzle, for almost 4 years now.

Over the years, Pat has mentioned a time or two that he trades on the internet for additional income.  I'd always been intrigued by this, since Pat and his wife Ali hadn't held a typical job in years!  They retired in their late twenties and were traveling the world by sailboat, a VW bus, a Porsche, and now another sailboat.  What was Pat doing?!  I love numbers and I think I'm pretty intelligent, but they didn't teach me this stuff in school.  I keep up with the daily activity of the Dow Jones on television, and I often wish that I had the knowledge (and money) to participate.  As I thought it would, the Dow has slowly gone up the past couple of years.  How could I learn this stuff?  I didn't have a clue, until now.

With Pat's writing style, I knew that if anyone could write a book about how to trade options in a way that I could understand ... it would be Pat!  He's got a great writing style, and he's not going to publish a book just for the sole purpose of making a profit.  If he's gonna write a book about trading, he's gonna make sure the content is valid, helpful and easy to understand.

As soon as "Live on the Margin" became available, I immediately ordered the Nook version (Kindle version here) and started reading it.  Did it disappoint?  This book was even better than I expected!   Before reading this book, I had never heard of stock options.  After reading this book, I now know what stock options are, why they're a better "bang for your buck" than regular stocks, what to look for in making trading decisions, and what internet sites offer the services of trading online.   I now have a whole new understanding of how generating income in stocks is possible and how it all works.

As the book states, trading is a form of gambling!  The book also covers the psychological aspect of trading, which I think is yet another great aspect of this book.  Our human emotions of fear and loss can greatly affect our decisions, and this book talks about how to deal with these emotions when trading.  A better understanding of human nature provides a better chance of trading successfully.

Since Ken and I are seriously interested in learning how to trade, today I ordered the paperback version.  We want to have this version so that we can easily refer to the book until we get the hang of things.  This isn't the kind of thing you read once if you're a beginner like us.  However, I think that this book provides everything we need to know to get started.  We're excited about our new "business venture"!

If you're not seriously interested in trading, this still might be a book that you'd enjoy.  The first part of the book speaks of a living a different lifestyle and  having a different mindset of what "success" is.  Most of us have been raised to think a certain way and live a certain way.  Pat writes about the "slacker", which isn't exactly what our parents have raised us to become.  However, the slacker doesn't look for entitlements or handouts.  Instead, the slacker is self-sufficient, keeps expenses low, and lives his/her passion with freedom from debt and material "anchors".   Yep, I now know what I am at heart .. a slacker!

I will also note that Pat wrote this book with another "slacker" that he met through the slacker lifestyle.  The book tells both of their stories of how they've achieved their dreams through just a few days a week (or month) in the trading market.  This book is not only a great learning tool, but an inspiration.  Kudos to both of them for such a great job!

Deja Vu?

Another beautiful weekend at home ... a view from our backyard and down the canal.

This past weekend was just like the last ... beautiful skies and warm weather!  Just like the last weekend ... one of us was sick.  This time, it was me on the sofa with the Kleenex.   Deja Vu?

Ken is almost feeling back to normal, and I think I'm on the right track too.  A cold front moved in yesterday and we had to say goodbye to the seventy-something degree weather.  Luckily, the forecast calls for warmer weather again this weekend.  Hopefully we'll both feel better by then!

While on the sofa, I again flipped through the pages of Jimmy Buffett's book about his life, "A Pirate Looks At 50".  I just finished the book a few days prior, and I wanted to go back and highlight some of the quotes that I loved.  I really enjoyed this book!  Here is an example of why I like this book so much and the quotes I went back and highlighted:  "Fifty is not the age to try and start a new life. Begin your adventures as early as you can. I promise you, you will not get burned out. It actually becomes the most enjoyable way to spend time on Earth as opposed to just pacing the cage".  We couldn't agree more!  However, we got a late start and we're almost fifty.  At least we'll get out there a little before then.  Better late than never!

Now that I'm ready for another book, I ordered Pat Schulte's (Bumfuzzle) book that just came out yesterday.  It's a book that he co-wrote with another free spirit and it's about how to make a living from your computer and day trading.  It's called Live on the Margin, and it's also about achieving a lifestyle of adventure without money holding you back.  Sounds like my kinda book!  Plus, I like Pat's writing style, and I think this book will be easy to read and understand.  We know nothing about stocks and trading!  I don't have a Kindle (link above), so I ordered my book for my Nook here.  If you want paperback, that should be out in about a week.  However, Pat's running a special for the next few days.  If you send him your receipt for the book, he'll send you an audio version for free.  I emailed my receipt today, and I look forward to the audio version for Ken since he hates to read.

I don't like reality shows, so I hate to admit it but ... I watched a 2-hour reality show of Mario Lopez getting married.  Maybe it was because I was sick, maybe it was because the wedding was on the beach in Mexico, or maybe it was because Mario Lopez is so damn good looking!  Ken wasn't interested in sitting on the sofa all weekend or watching Mario (go figure!) so ...

Ken tackled a long overdue project ... our garage!  Our garage is really Ken's garage, and it's where all of his "stuff" is for his construction business.  It was a mess, with nowhere to walk.  Ken through away a lot of stuff and by the end of the weekend we could actually walk around the garage.  We can even reach our motorcycles.  Motorcycles?!  Yes, we each own one (Ken has a Harley and I have a Honda Shadow) but we've been so busy the past couple of years with fixing our house and trying to make a living that we've neglected them.  Ken's bike now needs a little TLC, but we're determined to get some riding time in this Spring before we have to reluctantly sell them.  They'd be nice to cruise the islands on, but we just can't find a place for them on Nirvana!

Only two more weekends before Christmas?!  Thanks to online shopping I'm ready.

A Pirate Looks At Fifty!

This past weekend was the first weekend in forever (it seems) that we didn't have anything to do.  No home repairs (still a few to do, but nothing major), no family outings, no work ... nothing!  We had a free schedule for two days, along with beautiful weather.  The weekend was sunny and in the mid-70's ... perfect!  So we went sailing right?  Wrong.
Unfortunately poor Ken was sick all weekend and still is.   I'm not complaining, but I felt really bad for Ken.  He's been working so hard and when he finally has a weekend to himself he gets sick!   So, we spent the weekend on the sofa most of the time.  Ken even stayed home from work yesterday and pulled himself out of bed to head to work today.  No work means no income from his business!  I'm afraid he has the flu, and if he isn't feeling better tomorrow I'm dragging his butt to the doctor.
Ken is not one to sit around, and I thought he was gonna go stir crazy hanging inside the house all weekend.  Yesterday he couldn't take it any longer (at 9AM) and checked on a few jobs, only to come back in less than an hour cause he felt dizzy.  I joked with him and asked what he's gonna do when we're living on the boat and it's raining for a day or two.  Like now, he'll just have to deal with it.
On the other hand, I'm easily amused and can sit inside for days alone if need be.  Maybe it's cause I was pretty much raised as an only child (my brother lived with my Dad) or maybe it's cause I barely have a pulse (I'm told this every time I'm at the doctor's office), but I don't get bored.  If nothing else, just give me a book and I'm good for hours!
So, while Ken was on the sofa watching television I almost finished reading Jimmy Buffett's book,
"A Pirate Looks At 50".  He wrote this book around 1997, around the time he was about to turn 50 years old.  I've really enjoyed the book, which covers how Jimmy Buffett got his start and became a huge success.  We all know who Jimmy Buffett is, don't we?!  Jimmy Buffett has had a pretty interesting life ... sailing boats, flying planes, and traveling all over the tropics singing fun tunes.  This makes a good read!
While reading the book, I noticed something.   There were so many times in Jimmy Buffett's life that one different decision would have totally changed his future and his life.  If something hadn't "gone wrong", he'd have never gone down the path that he did.  If he hadn't "gone for it", he'd also have never wound up where he is today.  There's a part in the book that tells of his first marriage and divorce.  When he left the marriage and headed to Key West, he was flat broke and without a job.  With the few dollars he had, Jimmy rented an apartment and went to Goodwill to buy some tropical clothes and a bicycle.  Thanks to the ability to socialize and take risks, he wound up living in Key West for 20 more years! We know the rest of the story.
I highly recommend this book*, and I am once again reminded ... "Live Your Dreams"!

*This would make a great gift!  Please consider making any of your Amazon purchases from our site!  You'll be throwing a few cents in our cruising kitty, and it won't cost you any extra.

Christmas Gift Ideas!

Merry Christmas from Louisiana!

It's that time of year when you need to figure out what to get that special someone.  Don't you hate trying to figure it out?!  Well, I've got a few suggestions that should make him/her happy, and some are really unique.  We'd sure like these gifts!

I recently heard of these "cooling" towels, and they sound ... cool!  Just wet the towel and it becomes cool to the touch.  This sounds like something that would be great to have in the hot tropics, or even here in Louisiana!  Anyone who likes boating and time at the beach needs to protect their phone, camera, etc.  These Dry Paks keep everything dry, and it can be worn around your neck!

For those evenings on the boat, I found these LED waterproof rope lights.  I haven't ordered them ... yet!  However, I'm hoping Santa may bring these to give our salon, v-berth and cockpit some warm light.  Glass on a boat isn't good!  Store your wine bottles with these inexpensive wine skins that protect the bottle against leaks and breaks. If your budget is a little bigger and you wanna keep your loved one safe, how about an inflatable life vest?  I think every cruiser needs one of these.  I can't vouch for this particular brand, but you get the idea.

Books are always a great idea, and I think these books cover a little bit of everything ... a guide to the nautical rules of the road, a book about Jimmy Buffett's life, and a cookbook. I recently purchased all three of these books, and I hightly recommend them!  In fact, I wrote a review of the "Rules of the Road" if you want more info on it.  I haven't written a review YET for the cookbook, but it is great!  It's specifically designed for the challenges of living on a sailboat.  It not only includes tasty and easy recipes but also substitutions, ideas for those without refrigeration, cooking in a thermos, and suggestions for food items sold in other countries. I read Jimmy Buffett's book, and I really enjoyed it (read my review).  I had no idea he was such a talented writer, but with his songs I should have known!  I've also included a few of my favorite books on the right side of our blog for more ideas.

Speaking of "The Boat Galley", the author has highly recommended this stove-top oven.  This would be great for boats that don't have an oven, or even for camping.  I'd love one of these!

Everybody likes a good movie!  I'm not one for some soppy (is that a word?!) love story, but I loved "Legends of the Fall".  It's not only about a romance, but about three brothers and the love of one woman.  It's really good, and Brad Pitt doesn't hurt!  Guys, you'll like this too!  If you like a good drama, "The Fighter" is great!  Not only is it a good story about a man's attempt at a career in boxing, but it's a true story ... loved it!  "Captain Ron" was among the movies that I recommend last year, and I've kept it on this year's list because every sailor needs this classic movie!  If you haven't watched it yet ... you need to.  Martin Short and Kurt Russell are really funny, and I can't imagine ever getting tired of this movie!

Okay I've got my wine protectors, my mood lighting, my books and DVDs ... how bout a TV?!

Need more ideas?   A while back I created a page full of links to books, music, and bling.  You're sure to find something there!  Santa, are you reading this?!

*Yes, we will make a few cents if you buy any of these products from our site.  In fact, if you're going to order anything from Amazon, please click on the black "Amazon" box on the right side of our blog to do your shopping there.  I promise you won't pay any more than if you went to Amazon directly, and you'll also be helping us out a little!

Rules of the Road

With cruising in our future, I figured it would be a good idea to know the "rules of the road".  Ken and I have been boating most of our lives, but it's been in lakes, rivers and bayous.  We've had to dodge skiers and fishermen, but really not much more.  In fact, we've probably dodged crab traps more than anything!

When I saw "The One Minute Guide" ... I figured this was the book for us.  I didn't want anything too complicated, and this book claimed to explain all the rules in a way that was easily understood.  Also, even though it's not required on our boat, this book satisfies the US Coast Guard requirements for carrying the rules on board.

After reading through the book and marking some of the info with a highlighter, I would recommend this book (you can order from link above).  Not only does it break down the rules for easy understanding as claimed, but it also has a quick-reference chart on the inside cover.  Most of the rules seem to be common sense, but when in a stressful or dangerous situation ... common sense can be forgotten.

There's no way I can cover all the rules, but here's an idea of what's in the book ...
  • A sailing vessel is "under sail" and becomes a "power driven" vessel any time the motor is running.
  •
  • A sailing vessel underway keeps out of the way of:  a vessel not under command, a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver, and a vessel engaged in fishing.
  •
  • If you're motor-sailing or motoring, than you must keep out of the way of those mentioned above, as well as a sailing vessel.
  •
  • When motor-sailing on vessel 12 meters or more, display a cone, apex down.
  •
  • If two sailboats are meeting and on different tacks, the port tack vessel stay clear.  If on same tack, windward tack vessel stay clear.  If on port tack and uncertain about windward vessel, stay clear.
  •
  • If both vessels are power-driven and meeting head-on, both vessels should alter course to starboard and pass port-to-port.
  •
  • The book even goes into low visibility, sounds and lights on a boat.  Since our boat is less than 12 meters, we're only required to have a whistle, horn or whatever we choose.  Over 12 meters (but less than 20 meters) requires a whistle and 20m-100m requires a whistle and a bell.
  •
  • Nirvana requires a masthead light with a visibility of 2 miles, a sidelight of 1 mile, a sternlight of 2 miles, a towing light of 2 miles, an all-round light (white, red, green or yellow) of 2 miles, and a special flashing light (yellow light flashing at 57 times per minute) of 2 miles.  Larger vessels (12 to 50 meters) require the same lights, but require a higher intensity.  The book also instructs where to place the lights for different scenarios.
  •
There's much more in this book, and I'm sure we'll be keeping it handy on Nirvana.  Hopefully, we won't be grabbing it for the "avoiding a collision" section!

My Latest Cruising Books!

Yesterday, I was excited to order a book that I had been wanting for a while now ... "The Boat Galley Cookbook"!  It just became available for purchase, and I didn't waste any time buying my copy.  I've been familiar with the authors Carolyn and Jan for a while now.  Both women have years of experience cruising and living on a sailboat with their husbands, and I've already learned a lot of great tips from them on their web sites, The Boat Galley (Carolyn) and Commuter Cruiser (Jan).   Since this book will be so handy, I didn't want this on my Nook.  I wanted a copy that I could put easily get my hands on.

As I was about to place my order, I noticed that I could either pay about $5 in shipping or spend another $5 and be eligible for free shipping.  This was a no brainer for me ... I need to buy another book!  I started browsing Amazon for another book, but I didn't want a love story or some fictional book.  I wanted another book that Ken and I could really learn from and refer to.  I found "The One-Minute Guide to the Nautical Rules of the Road".  This book sounded like something we really needed!  Have I mentioned lately that Ken and I know nothing about navigation?  I'm equally excited about this book!

Yesterday was just a day for books I guess, because I also came across a free e-book that a fellow cruiser has written.  Her name is Jan, and she's part of a Facebook group called "Women Who Sail".  I love this group, and I've already learned so much from these other women.  When I heard that Jan had written a book about downsizing from a large home to a sailboat, I knew that this was another book I had to read.  After all, we're currently working on downsizing to our sailboat ... perfect timing!  Jan has been generous enough to offer a FREE download all week, today being THE LAST DAY!  Even if you don't have a Kindle, you can download Jan's book to your computer.  Since I have a Nook, that's what I did.

I'm really excited about these books, and suggest you check them out too.  I'll write about my thoughts once I've had a chance to read them.

Another book that I'm anxiously waiting for publication is written by the Bumfuzzles, Pat and Ali Schulte.
I've been following their blog for a couple of years now and I've already read the first book they published (below).  Pat and Ali have been cruising for several years since the young age of twenty-something and they make most of their money from day trading.  Pat's been working with another guy on his second book, which is supposed to be like "Trading for Dummies" kind of concept.  The book shares what Pat has learned over the years.  Who doesn't want to make money for their cruising kitty?!   Needless to say, I'm buying it as soon as it's available!  With a second book on the way, I have a feeling Pat and Ali are going to supplement their cruising kitty quite nicely as "authors".

So I'm adding books to my little library about downsizing, cruising, cooking, navigating ... all perfect for beginners like us.  Just add making money from day trading and we're set right?!

Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!

Frugal Fridays - Free Books!

I love to read, but my future plans of living on a sailboat won't allow space for many books.  Also, my budget can't afford $20 every month for a good read.  However, I came across a great site that provides tons of  free ebooks that can be read online, downloaded, or sent to your eBook reader or mobile phone!

The site is called Project Gutenberg, and was founded in 1971 ... I didn't realize this was even a thought back then!  There is no registration required, and there are all sorts of topics available.  I looked up "Sailing", and didn't find anything, but then I looked up "Travel" and found several books about sailing.

The site also includes information about the founder, Michael Hart.  Mr. Hart invented electronic books, and therefore left a major mark on the world.  He seemed to be an amazing person who was also frugal, often using home remedies instead of going to the doctor and fixing his own car and home instead of hiring someone.  He prided himself on being unreasonable, and he had some great words of wisdom.  It's unfortunate that whether we want to or not ... most of us have heard of  Snooky (not a fan!) and Lindsay Lohan, but not Michael Hart and so many other silent heroes that have been such a productive part of society.  That's all I'll say about that!

Happy reading!

Bumfuzzle - The Book and The Review

It seems to me that anyone who has done any research on cruising has come across Patrick and Ali, the Bumfuzzles.  I know when I first started surfing the net for info on cruising I quickly found them.  Patrick and Ali started cruising about seven years ago, in their late 20's ... with no prior sailing experience.  They purchased a catamaran in Florida, sailed to the Bahamas, then shot straight across to the Panama Canal ... to sail around the world!  Whether or not you're familiar with them I suggest that you read their book, Bumfuzzle - Just Out Looking for Pirates!

Patrick and Ali documented their experiences on their web site, which I have been following for about 2 1/2 years now.*  Even though I've read about their cruising experience on their site, I really enjoyed their book!  It is very easy to read and is more about their adventure and travels than the techniques of sailing.  It does include a lot of the same material on their site, but who has time to go through years of posts in a few sittings?!  This book contains the most pertinent posts, along with some added thoughts about the different cultures, people and places they visited.  Pat is honest in his writings, which sometimes seem to offend the cruising world.  However, there is no right or wrong way to cruise, as long as it's your way.  They basically had a simple "take it as it comes" attitude and did not give a lot of thought before acting.  This attitude has been the topic of debate in many cruising forums.  They also confessed to never having a love of sailing ... it was just a way to travel.  Nothing wrong with that!  I may be saying the same thing in a few years!

Although Pat and Ali were new to sailing, they didn't have any real horror stories and they survived to tell the tale.  Since then they've lived and traveled in an RV for a few years, participated in a race with the family Porsche, had two kids, and recently bought another sailboat ... a mono-hull this time!  They're currently living around Baja, Mexico with their two young children, Ouest and Lowe.  I'm looking forward to reading about cruising in Mexico.  We'll be there in our sailboat someday!

*That's about the time that Ken and I committed to cruising ... coincidence?  Well, the seed of cruising had already been planted, but just weeks later I came across the Bumfuzzle site and they got me really excited about cruising.  Reading their prior posts about cruising around in a beautiful catamaran ... I was hooked!  Of course, it didn't take long for me to realize how much more expensive catamarans are than mono-hulls.  A mono-hull would have to do for us to go cruising.  (We do love our Catalina).

If you have an e-reader, the e-book is also available and it's practically free!  It's available for both Kindle and the Nook, which I have and love!  I mean, how cool is it have hundreds of books at my fingertips, and on the boat, in one tiny little device.  Now I won't have to give up precious space in our boat for books!

A Sailor's Christmas List!

Well, Christmas is around the corner which means you'd better hurry up and buy those gifts!  Wondering what to get?  Well, if your friend or family member likes boating, than here's some ideas that we think are good basics for the boater and/or cruiser.  In fact, most of these items are on our "wish list" too!  Just click on the link for more info...

Every time Ken and I go out on our sailboat, we're reminded how bad we need this drinks/binoculars rack.  We don't have anywhere to place our drinks, so this is a real must!  Plus, this holds other things like binoculars.

Speaking of binoculars ... waterproof binoculars are also a great gift for a boater.  Binoculars are great for using when trying to see that island from afar or those dolphin that are just a little too far away.

Caframo 12v cabin fans are a must when living in the hot and humid South!  We hear that this brand is pretty good, and we'll be getting a few of these next year.

Hatch covers with mosquito screen ... these are something that we'd like to have.  Mosquitos are often called the "State Bird" here in Louisiana!

Leatherman Multi-Tool - Ken has one of these and loves it!  It's small and handy!

Gear Hammock - This is another item we don't have yet, but will be a must when cruising to hold all those odds and ends.  We'll need a few of these!

Beer Making Kit! - Now this is something that sounds pretty interesting to me.  Ken loves beer and this may be a cheaper option.

GoPro® HD HERO2 Camera -  I should have a star by this one!  I don't have one of these waterproof video cameras yet, but it's definitely something I want.  I've heard a lot of really good things about this camera.

Oh, and SailorBags ... any of them!  I was lucky enough to win a contest they were having, and they provided me with a large duffel bag.  I LOVE IT!  I knew there products were good, but I was really impressed when I received my bag.  Now, I want more!  I'd especially like the large tote or the messenger bag.

Books are always a great idea, and I think these books cover a little bit of everything ... a story written by a female cruiser about her experiences, learning to sail, learning the boat's electronics, learning a new language, and cruising on a budget.   While we don't own "The Motion of the Ocean" and "Spanish for Cruisers", they are on my list.  The other three books are great, and I often refer to "The Complete Sailor".

While I'm mentioning books, I want to recommend a "non-sailing" book that is a crime drama. It's called All Rise and it was written by my step-mom. The story takes place on the Mississippi Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, and it's a really good read! In fact, my step-mom is currently working on the publishing of her upcoming second book.  We're really proud of her!

Movies are always a great idea! Many cruisers watch movies on their boat instead of watching television, which draws a lot of power! There are tons of movies out there, but here are three of my favorites!  First, is a classic for boaters (and even non-boaters) ... the comedy "Captain Ron".

Another idea for a more dramatic movie is "Seven Years in Tibet".  Not only does this movie feature the great-looking Brad Pitt, but it's based on a true story about the Dahli Lahma as a child in Tibet. There has been an ongoing battle between China and Tibet, and this movie really educated me about what has been happening.  I love the Buddhist teachings, and this was a real eye-opener,  Also, the scenery is beautiful!

Since most sailors like to travel, "Eat, Pray, Love" is also a good option.  The character takes a break from life and travels to Italy, Bali and India.  I loved the scenery and life's lessons that the character learned.

Of course, there's also our pirate products that we've created.  We have t-shirts, waterproof backpacks, lotions, shower gels and soaps.  Most are around $15, so check them out at our store!

Need more ideas?   A while back I created a page full of links to books, music, and bling.  You're sure to find something there!  Santa, are you reading this?!

*Yes, we will make a few cents if you buy any of these products from our site.  But hey, you'll be paying the same and giving us a gift too ... pretty cool!

Meet the Parents!

With only a few days into the new year, I was so excited to see another donation to our cruising kitty!  This time the people making the donation were very familiar to Ken and I, as they were my parents.  Actually, I have two sets of parents so let me explain.  My mom and dad divorced when I was an infant, and they both remarried.  Therefore, I have a family that includes step-parents, which I think makes me more in the norm than not.
My Dad n Pat and our daughter, Erica, with my Mom n Bob

So, as I was saying, we received a donation to kick off the new year from my dad and step-mother.  Therefore, I thought this would be a great opportunity to state my appreciation for having such awesome parents.  All four of my parents have been supportive in our recent venture to "sail away", and they were sure to be some of the firsts to buy some of our pirate t-shirts and bath products.  That's not to say that my mom and step-dad understand how we could live on a boat, nor why.  In fact, I think they're convinced we've lost our minds!  I think my dad and step-mom get it, or at least do a good job at pretending to.  =)

Since my dad and step-mom gave a donation, I wanted to recognize them as I always do when a generous person donates.  My dad, Eddie, is a retired Fire Chief from New Orleans.  I guess because my father was a fireman, I have great respect for them and what they do.  These brave men and women risk their lives much more than we realize.  Think of 9/11 and how many firemen lost their lives trying to save others.  Anyway, the last fire station that my dad worked at is right in the heart of the French Quarter, giving me free parking whenever I'm there.  If you've ever been to the French Quarter, you know that having free parking is an awesome perk!

My step-mom, Pat, recently published her very first book, All Rise!   We're so proud of her, and the book is really good.  I know she's family, but it really is!  It's a crime novel that is based on the Mississippi Gulf Coast shortly after the now infamous Hurricane Katrina.  Having experienced Hurricane Katrina myself, I really enjoyed the subtle inclusion of this topic, as well as the story line which will keep you guessing.  Pat also has her own blog, Pat Daspit's Kreative Korner, which includes posts about self-improvement and putting wounds from the past ... in the past!

So, I'm a very lucky girl to have such great, supportive parents that have always been there for me.  I'm so thankful that my mom and dad have remained friends all these years, and that they have both always been a major part of my childhood and now adult life. They have raised me to be an independent, self-sufficient person, which I'm so grateful for.  Thanks to them I don't live beyond my means like so many people in our society do today.

So thanks Dad and Pat!  We'll be adding your names to our toast when we reach the tropics!

Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!
