Crawfish Cook Off!

Ken's boiled bugs ... seasoned perfectly!

After literally drowning in our sorrows last week, the rain finally stopped and we had our first day of sun in over a week.  This was just in time for the annual Crawfish Cook-Off that Ken's been participating in for the past couple of years.  The weather was gorgeous with blue skies, lots of sunshine, temps in the low 80's and low humidity.  Mix that with friends, family, beer and crawfish ... just what Ken and I needed to forget about our troubles for the day.  The event is held at a friend's house, and they know how to throw a party!

Ken's been boiling crawfish a long time, and he's often complemented on his boils.  In fact, Ken took 1st prize last year!  The year before that (Ken's first year) he joined at the last minute and was late with his boil.  Late meant disqualified from the judging but a lot of folks told him that he should have won.  So, last year Ken was prepared and took the trophy ... even though the day before was our daughter's wedding and he was exhausted.  We figured Ken wouldn't be allowed to win two years in a row, but we really didn't care anyway.  The event is a lot of fun, and Ken just boils the way he always does.

Although Ken's got his recipe down, boiling a bunch of crawfish requires help ... mainly muscle.  So, Ken invited our friend Dennis to join in the competition this year.  The cook-off started around 9:00 am, with a Bloody Mary bar to kick things off.  There were about eight teams competing, each with their own tent and boiling area.   Ken named his team the "D" team after being "disqualified" the first year, even though everyone "devoured" his crawfish, and he "dominated" the boil.  That first white tent in the pic below is Ken's area (our daughter in the lime green shirt and Dennis' wife on the left).  Oh, and that's Ken looking at ya!

Pouring the pot ... that's where the muscle comes in!  BTW, I wanted to smack that cigarette outta Ken's mouth ... he hadn't smoked in a while.  He was back to being a "quitter" the next day.

Each team had their own canoe, and Ken's was number "6" ...

There was a great band playing while everyone tasted the team's bugs.

Me and my "Crawfish King"!

Our friend Connie, me, our daughter - Erica, and Dennis' wife - Evie ...

The guys ... Dennis, Ken and Connie's husband Joe.  Our son-in-law was home sick ... poor guy!  We refer to Joe as "Burt Reynolds" and found out that we're not the only ones.

While we were just having fun, we wondered if Ken would have to turn over the trophy.  I'm not kidding when I tell ya that four different guys came to Ken and said his crawfish were definitely the best.  If that didn't count for something, then maybe the fact that Ken's canoe was out of crawfish way before the other canoes .. hmmm.  Anyway, we really didn't count on being allowed to win twice, especially since it's not a secret of whose team has what number canoe.  We "won" by being there!  Note the last plaque from 2014 ... The "D" Team.

While we ate and drank, the kids played in the dunking booth and pool.

I have to take this opportunity and mention that Ken and our friend Joe (Burt Reynolds) built this beautiful covered patio and outdoor kitchen ... isn't it gorgeous?!

Yep, that's us under the patio ... we got around!

Ken also built the gazebo and was the contractor for the outdoor fireplace and patio.  The home, pool, outdoor areas and grounds are so pretty!  There are lots of places to "escape" ...

I'm born and raised in the New Orleans area, but I'd never seen "Crawfish Boil" soap before.  It included pumice (to remove the grit) and peppermint (to leave your hands smelling good). This stuff was great!

As we figured, Ken had to turn over the 1st place trophy to the "A" team, but Ken took second place!  Here's a picture of Ken and Dennis with the 2nd place medal and the "D" team t-shirt that our daughter made.  In the rush that morning, the team shirts were left behind and thus made it late and never worn ... yet.  Remember the story of the "D" team?  The front had a crawfish on the pocket and said "D" team.  Erica did a great job.  (She can make you a custom shirt too)!

I can't believe I never got a photo of the hosts!  With all of the people and mingling, I just didn't get a chance.  Anyway, Chris and Tina are so gracious to open up their home and throw this great event every year.  Thanks Tina and Chris!

We "boiled" our worries away for the day ... do we really have to go back to reality?!

Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!

*We received so many kind words of encouragement on our Facebook page after our last post.  Thanks so much ... we really appreciate it!

A Positive Note!

Yesterday we had two positive things happen that made it a pretty good day for us.  The first was the most fun, and the second was the most reassuring.

I'll start with the first, and the fun!  Yesterday, I won two free tickets to see Eric Clapton next week ... woo hoo!  While at work I have to have noise, which means I'm always listening to the radio.  The local station has been giving away Eric Clapton tickets to "caller 8" for the past month and I've tried winning a lot during that time.  Only once did I get through, and I was "caller 7" ... damn almost!  Almost don't get ya tickets, so I kept trying.  Yesterday, I was just about to quit calling when the phone actually started ringing and a guy answered, "Congratulations!  You're caller eight"!  I couldn't believe it, and I couldn't wait to call Ken and tell him the news.  It was a pretty good way to start the day.

The second thing that happened really reassured us that we'll be okay and the world won't come crashing in on us ... we found a really nice couple to rent our vacant house!  We've been really stressed about having it vacant for almost two months now, with no potential buyers and no rental applicants that we felt good about ... we don't wanna screw up this time!  Last week we met an older couple with no kids at home that seem to be really responsible.  We've interviewed a lot of people over the years, and we've never felt as good about a tenant as we do about this couple.  I processed their application yesterday, we came to an agreement, and they're going to move in on April 1st.  This means we won't have to pay the mortgage ourselves next month ... whew!  We've been spending the past few Saturdays cleaning and painting, Ken and some help are out there today and tomorrow, and we'll be out there again the next couple of weekends to get everything ready.  We're looking forward to April ... warmer weather and a break!

Although we're still trying to find a buyer for our house, yesterday was a step in the right direction.  We're gonna think positive, and know that we'll sell our house soon.

I suddenly can't get "Lay Down Sally"  outta my head!

Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!

Frugal Fridays - Free Corona!

How would you like some Corona beer products such as a beach towel, t-shirt, sun visor, bottle opener, or a 12-pack bottle cooler ... for free?!  Well, the Facebook Corona Beach Break application is giving away these items, and plenty more.  All you have to do is upload a picture, create an event, or do some other simple little thing and earn points.   After you've accumulated a few points, you can go shopping at the Corona store and get your free stuff!  BTW, you won't find a whole lot of ways to earn points in April because Corona's taking a little break, but they're gearing up for May and Cinco de Mayo!

I've only been using the Corona Beach Break app for a couple of months, and I've already scored a sun visor, a bottle opener for our sailboat, and a 12-pack bottle cooler!  I'm already working on my next purchase, which I'll probably have enough points for in a few weeks.  If I were patient and letting my points add up, I could even get a sweet Corona surfboard!  Check out their short little video that tells you more about it.

Valentine's Surprise!

Last night I came home from work with a package waiting for me at the front door.  Hmmm ... had I ordered something?  No, nothing for Nirvana had been ordered lately.  I excitedly opened the box ... I love surpises!  There were several items wrapped in tissue paper, and the first thing I unwrapped was the "Love Goddess" chocolate cake mix.  Could this be the Patron tequila gift set that I had tried to win by entering a contest last week?

The next thing I unwrapped was a red candle, then some edible rose petals, a cheese cutting board, and then ... two Patron glasses.  Woo hoo!

Yes, this was the Patron gift set that I was hoping for!  Although I have to admit I was hoping to find a little bottle of Patron tucked in the box ... I was still stoked!  I'm so easily amused and was grinning from ear to ear over my new prize.

To make things even better, we received a postcard in the mail stating the Ken had won a 7-day cruise from any port in the United States.  Yeah, yeah ... I bet it's another time share presentation!  We know better than to think we've just "won" a free cruise, like we won our Patron prize pack.  That would be too good to be true!  But, we figured that Ken should give the number a call to claim our "prize" and see what the catch is.  Yes, we do have to attend a one-hour presentation, but we've been promised it's not a time-share.  Evidently, this is some kind of new "club"... kind of like a Sam's Club.  Soooo, this Thursday night we're headed to New Orleans to hear the presentation, expecting to claim our free cruise without spending a dime.  We've been to some time-share presentations in the past and we're really good at standing our ground, frugal folks that we are.  Ken and I have never been on a cruise, and the cruise ships leave every Sunday right down the road in New Orleans.  We desperately need a vacation, so we hope this works out as promised.

So, the eve of Valentine's Day was pretty good and for once the mail didn't have any bills ... just these two items.  As I mentioned on our last Frugal Friday's post, Ken and I don't do a whole lot for Valentine's Day.  I find the day a great excuse not to cook, but we don't want to fight the crowds in the restaurants nor spend a lot of money so ... pizza tonight!  I may even make the chocolate cake that came in the Patron prize pack so we'll have a little dessert.  What more could a girl ask for ... LOL!  Money saved now is money in the future for Nirvana and our cruising dream.

I posted this picture to the left last year and thought I'd post my "sweethearts" again.  This is Ken and our daughter in Destin, FL about 19 years ago.  I love this picture ... they are my heart!

Here's a little "gift" for ya'll on Valentine's ... a great little video that shows how to tie your own celtic heart knot.  This would make a great necklace, and I hope to try this soon.   Enjoy  ... "Happy Valentine's Day"!

Tomorrow I'll be in the stores stocking up on all the half-priced Valentine's candy!

Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!

A Winning Week!

The winning photo for SailorBags competition!

I've been meaning to post this for a couple of weeks, but thanks to an unexpected visitor from "Lee" this post was pushed aside for a little while.  I try to post only twice a week because I believe that many of you that give us your time (we are so grateful) by reading our posts are also reading a lot of other blogs.  I don't want to take up too much of your time.  So, with our NKOTB series taking up every Friday, I sometimes get a little behind.

Anyway, even though this post is a little late it's a very important post to us because Ken and I very much appreciate all the support the we receive from you, the reader.

If you have been following our blog, you know that we competed in a Sailrite competition for a $250 gift card.  We really wanted to win this gift card because we've been having our eye on Sailrite's "Sail Pack Kit", which costs about $260.  Our sail cover sucks, and this would not only replace it but also provide an easier way for us to store our main sail ... just lower into the sail pack and zip!

The winner of this competition would be chosen by the number of votes received.  If you haven't heard on our FB page, we won!  (Check out our winning entry). Thanks to all of you who voted for us, and thanks Sailrite!  We were really surprised at the number of you who not only voted for us, but were kind enough to ask your own friends to vote.  We couldn't have won this competition without you, and we are truly grateful.  We wasted no time in ordering our sail pack kit, and we received it a few days ago.  Today, I'm bringing the sail pack kit to my awesome step-mom, who has so generously agreed to sew this for us.  She's an amazing seamstress and once again we are so grateful for her help.  We'll post pictures of our new sail pack in the future.

The very same week that we won the Sailrite competition, we were informed that we also won a contest from SailorBags that we joined!  What a great week it was ... we felt that finally luck was on our side.  The SailorBags competition required that we send in a picture of sailing fun.  No votes were required and SailorBags would choose the winner.  We sent in the picture above, which won us a new SailorBags duffel bag ... woo hoo!  We were told that this picture won the prize because we looked like we were having a great time and were genuinely relaxed ... we were!  This picture was taken back in March (I think) and it was a great day on the water with friends.  Thanks SailorBags!

We recently received our SailorBags duffel bag, and boy were we impressed!  I'll write a post about their bags in the near future, because they really do have a fantastic product.  We may just have to order a large tote bag soon!

So, "Gracias" to all of you.  We really needed some good luck, as our personal life with work and "landlord hell" was really taking its toll on us.  BTW, I think we found a new tenant for yet another vacated rental.  We sign the lease today.  We're keeping our fingers crossed that the drama is over for a while!

Oh, we did squeeze in some sailing this past weekend ... finally!  The weather was perfect and the relaxation was much needed to de-stress.  Like an addict, we need more this coming weekend!

We also had to get more of the French Quarter this past Friday night.  This time we were at Margaritaville for another blues band.  We sat by the bar as the band was just about to start playing.  The bartender told one of the band members as he ordered another round for the band ... "Tell him to be patient, he's already had 10!"   Ten?!  Yep, the guy with the captain's hat was getting his share.  That explains why he was so mellow with a little shit-eating grin on his face the whole time!  I don't remember his name, but evidently he's traveled the world playing music.  Those drinks must agree with him, because he was amazing.  His hands just flowed across the guitar strings ... sooo smooth!  It's amazing how much talent is in the French Quarter!  At any given time you can walk into place after place (or street corner) and hear all types of great live music.  We will miss the French Quarter once we "sail away", and we'll have to get our fix when we visit family.

The "Captain" ... comfortably numb!

Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!

Our Sail Cover Sucks!

Yes, our sail cover really sucks!  The zipper is broke, the clasps are broke and we need to hold the cover together with bungee cords!  Why are we boring you with this?  Because you can help us buy a new one without having to do anything but click and vote!

We're contestants in a SailRite contest, and the winning prize is a $250 gift card!  We've been having our eye on a "Sail Pack" kit for about a year now, but we just haven't had the extra funds to purchase one.  If we win the gift card, we'll finally be able to purchase the kit.  Then, we won't only have a new sail cover, but a sail "pack", which would be awesome!  A sail pack makes storing the sails so much easier, which means we'd probably sail more often ... yes, we are lazy sometimes!

So, I know you're just itching to vote for us right?  So, all you need to do is CLICK HERE and vote ... it's that easy and quick!  We'd really appreciate your help, and you can even share the link on your Facebook page, site, or anywhere that you choose!

The voting ends August 31st ... so might as well vote now!  You'll be "paying it forward" and buying us something without spending a dime.

We really need some better luck lately, so we'd appreciate it!

Hasta luego ... until then.  Mid-Life Cruising!
