2022 in Review Part Two: Painting

I could almost call 2022 the 'Year of the speed-paints' having discovered the new army painter speed paints and put them to use on several projects! They have their advantages and disadvantages but when they are suitable for use they produce a decent result very quickly! Apart from a few odds and ends added to various armies this was my main output...

Art de la Guerre Palmyrans

A bit of nostalgia here with a sort-of reproduction whole army of my first ever metal ancients army, 25mm Hinchcliffe Palmyrans which I'd sold many years ago.

Irregular archers:

The mighty Cataphracts:

Field of Glory Renaissance TYW/ECW

Four speed-painted 28mm pike and shot units join the ranks:

Men Who Would be Kings/Sharp Practice Northwest Frontier

Another speed-painted army, this time Colonial Sikhs mainly in 20mm.

Bengal Lancers:

Sikh Infantry:

Rommel 1940 British

Additions to my Late War British army to allow me to field 1940 British.

The tough as old boots Matilda's:

Bag the Hun US Navy and IJN

Complimentary air forces also for use in Cruel Seas.

Japanese Zeros:

US Hellcats:

Cruel Seas US Navy

A cheap boxed set I picked up from Ebay continuing the Pacific War theme.

Landing craft:

Sub Chaser:

PT Boats

Cold War Commander British Army of the Rhine and Warsaw Pact

Two 6mm armies, easy to paint and cheap to buy!

Harriers:

The stars of the Warsaw Pact force, BMP-1's:

No actual use yet Evil Fantasy Army

This 15mm army had been in a box unpainted for many years. A few days speed-painting later and they are now ready for action should they ever manage to get a game!

Death Whisperers:

Orcs:

Wolf Riders:

What is on the horizon for 2023?

Field of Glory Renaissance

More Pike and Shot units, several units of Horse and some Croats.

Kiss Me Hardy

A French fleet box set, eventually I'll make a start on this.

Chain of Command

A complete Norwegian army I just bought from Great Escape Games. I also have an Afrika Corps army which has failed several attempts to paint it so I might pass that on to someone else!

Cold War Commander

A Norwegian army which shouldn't take long to finish at all.

Apart from the above there are the usual odds and ends of various armies to finish at some point. I've also started thinking about the possibility of doing a 28mm Renaissance Italian Wars army but really shouldn't go there!

2022 in Review Part One: Gaming

A full year saw me play a total of 51 games in 2022, almost one per week which were played variously at home, at Central London and at Cowards clubs.

Art de la Guerre

A total of eight games all with different armies (Syracusan, Later Carthaginian, Swiss, Palmyran, Venitian Condotta, Neo-Babylonian, Early Carthaginian and Hunnic).

Still a remarkably popular rule set at Central London and including an outing for my newly painted Palmyran army:

Art de la Guerre Renaissance

Written by my club mate Simon, ADLG-R is gaining popularity at Central London. I played eight games including three in one day for the ADLG-R competition Simon organised. Not so much variety in the armies used (Chinese x 3, Polish x 2, Later Royalist, Holy Roman Empire and Italian Wars French).

The Ming Chinese on their way to competition victory!

Sharp Practice

Eight games also for Sharp Practice, a bit of a revival for the rule set as I'd not been playing it much. A fair bit of variety in the armies as well (Napoleonic Austrian, Napoleonic Wurttemberg, AWI British, Indian Mutiny, NW Frontier British and three outings for the 15mm Dervishes).

Dervish hordes attack:

The Men of Company B

Four games (two VC, one ARVN Special Forces and one USMC) plus a game of Charlie Don't Surf. Both Dave and Gary enjoyed the games and were happy to play again (no solo games this year!). CDS was interesting to play at a Lard Day but I don't think I'll start playing them instead of TMOCB.

The Temple of Doom:

Space Weirdo's

Four games. An unusual entry as I normally have little to no interest in fantasy/sci-fi/role-playing games but Gary's Space Weirdo's campaign was great fun with easy to understand rules and allowed me to get Steed, Mrs Peel and the Bentley on the table!

Steed and Mrs Peel:

Rommel

Four games, one as the Germans in a D-Day scenario, one as Late War Americans and two with 1940 British.

British battle it out with Germans somewhere in France:

Cold War Commander

Three games in my first new period of the year. (BAOR one game, Warsaw Pact two) Not quite sure why I tried this as I have never played 'Moderns' (do the 1980's count as 'Modern's any more?!) but surprisingly I really enjoyed them, they are an interesting set of rules which seem to bring out the need for combining your various units very well.

Warsaw Pact forces rumble forward:

Blucher

Only two games this year using 1806 Prussians and French.

The 1806 Prussians in their first game:

Kiss Me Hardy

Two games as well, both with the Spanish.

The fleets engage!

Bag the Hun

Another new rule set for me which was partly inspired by adding more aircraft for Cruel Seas. The USN and IJN took to the air twice with both games demonstrating the superiority of the USN aircraft!

Massed dogfight!

Field of Glory Renaissance

Two games, one with 15mm Polish and one with 28mm Later TYW Germans. Despite the advent of ADLG-R I still really enjoy FoGR and managed to get a couple of games in and would love to play more.

TYW Germans take on Royalists:

Chain of Command

Just a single game where my Japanese took on Tim's USMC. A remarkable drop from last year's nine games perhaps as I didn't play any pint sized campaigns.

The Japanese defend the beaches:

Men Who Would be Kings

A single game also using my North West Frontier force against Afghans.

The column enters the Afghan badlands:

Strength and Honour

Another new rule set, from the Lardies and depicting huge battles ideally in 2mm scale. One game using 15mm Mithridatic against Romans to see how the rules work.

Not quite massed armies but still a fair few figures!

What failed to get played in 2022?

Fire and Fury

For the second year no F&F which is a shame as I'd love to play more.

Cruel Seas

My main opponent moved to the distant North, another period I'd like to play more of really.

Infamy

To be honest I didn't find Infamy that interesting and am regretting painting up two armies for it! At some point I may try to convert at least one to an ADLG army.

For King and Parliament

Another set of rules I wasn't that impressed with, I definitely prefer FoG-R for Renaissance games.

What could be new in 2023?

In all honesty I am going to try to avoid starting any new rule sets/periods this year! It is both a joy and a curse to have so many options to play which has ended up with the production of several armies that get used once or twice then abandoned. One exception will be the TFL 'What a Cowboy' rules that should be out soon and sound good fun. An advantage of that is that I already have all the figures and scenery required so, in theory at least, all I will need to get is the rules!

2021 In Review Part Two: Painting

I didn't paint as much in 2021 as I'd hoped, again largely due to being out of action for four months. However, I still managed a decent output I think especially as I have a whole new army almost finished but not included in the review!

Chain of Command

Mostly figures and scenery for the Basildon Home Guard campaign, I bought many of these when I was in hospital and playing the campaign encouraged me to get back into painting quickly.

The LDV:

The Smith Gun:

Almost everything I painted got into action and I'd very happily play the campaign again at some point in the future.

Another addition for CoC was a 20mm Imperial Japanese army as the start of a Pacific collection.

An infantry section:

Support elements:

A Ha-Go light tank:

The Chi-Ha:

I'm pleased with the way they came out and they got one outing in the Saipan campaign which should continue this year.

Cruel Seas

Two new fleets with the USN and IJN plus a couple more merchant ships.

USN:

The IJN:

Putting more effort into the IJN fleet has made me think about repainting the rest though I don't think they look too bad really. Seeing a cheap deal on a USN Fleet box (£26, normal price £72!) lead me to ordering one which should arrive soon so for the USN I'll just add some better painted ones. The British and Germans I'll probably just leave as they are.

The Men of Company B

Just one addition in the form of two platoons of ARVN troops. Being rated 'green' in general you get a lot more ARVN than the US Marines so I think they will provide an interesting change for the White Star games.

ARVN:

ARVN:

So overall considerably less output than in 2020 but I'm happy with the stuff I did manage to get done and most of them have seen some action.

What is on the horizon for 2022?

Cruel Seas

I have a RN Corvette, an IJN Landing Craft and the USN box set to complete for Cruel Seas which will give me more ships than I can possibly use probably. Still I like painting them so that's not really a problem.

Bag the Hun

Continuing the WW2 Pacific theme I've invested in some 1/300th US and Japanese aircraft for Bag the Hun, these are pretty easy to paint and won't take long to finish I think once the decals for them turn up.

For King & Parliament
Another eBay 'bargain' was a cheap Warlord Games 28mm ECW Battalia starter set. Initially I'd only wanted a box of infantry but when I found the starter set wasn't that much more expensive I weakened and bought one! I'm planning to paint them up as a Swedish TYW army and bought a few metal additions to go with the starter set. Probably a long term project....

Blucher

I've bought some more artillery for the 15mm 1870 French and Prussians plus some more Prussian infantry as I quite enjoyed the 1870 adaption for Blucher. I've also got a few various Napoleonic units to paint up at some stage.

ADLG

A whole new 25mm army which is almost finished (just needs basing), more on that soon hopefully!

2021 in Review Part One: Gaming

Looking back I've played 31 games over 2021 which is really quite remarkable considering I spent three months in hospital, another month at least recovering and have not played a game at the club all year!

This has only been possible thanks to the kind efforts of my friends who have been fantastic, coming to play me at home which has been most appreciated (and of course my wife who has generously allowed her home office to be converted into my temporary wargames club room!). If anyone had told me in February that I'd have played 31 games by the end of the year I'd not have believed them.....

So, what I have I actually played?

Chain of Command

Nine games in total, five using the Home Guard in the Basildon campaign, three with the Soviets in the many rivers to cross campaign and one each for the Germans and Japanese. I'm still really enjoying CoC and the Basildon campaign was probably the highlight of the year for me gaming wise, I'd watched Gary, Dave and Jerry play it out over Zoom in hospital and I really enjoyed playing it myself against Gary even though the poor Home Guard had few successes!

Art de la Guerre

Second most popular with eight games in total was ADLG (Kushite Egyptian, Early Carthaginian twice, Early Imperial Roman, Late Imperial Roman, Early Byzantine (twice) and Teutonic Knights). Oddly enough I've got more into ADLG this year, partly due to enthusiasm for using my old 25mm armies and partly due to it being a game that requires less effort when I feel tired than most other games!

Blucher

Only three games this year (French, Russians and Austrians) all of which I greatly enjoyed as usual. I also had a solo try out of some modifications for the FPW which look interesting.

Cruel Seas

Three games here as well (Japanese, USN and British). There is a fair bit of variety in Cruel Seas with the different fleets having their own advantages and disadvantages. There are also some interesting scenarios available to make the games even more varied.

Rommel

Only two games this year (Americans and Soviets), as ever very thoughtful and I'm sure once I get back to the club Andy will be happy to resume our battles!

For King and Parliament

Two games (both with Royalists) saw the 28mm ECW/TYW army finally take to the table! I'm not that keen on the rules but they are okay and it was great to get the army out finally.

Sharp Practice

One game, the Peninsular British against French. I still find SP a bit static and not as interesting as CoC but again was good to get an army I painted a long time ago on the table.

Infamy, Infamy

A single game using my ADLG Late Romans. Infamy has not really taken off for me and I'm not quite sure why! Having painted up two armies for it this is perhaps unfortunate.

Kiss me Hardy!

The only 'new' set of rules I've played this year and a late entry as it was the last game of the year for me. Admittedly I used my Spanish as French making them somewhat better but I have to say I enjoyed it a lot more than Black Seas, it seemed easier to play and the differences in quality were not so marked. While the Black Seas games were more well-it's-nice-to-get-them-on-the-table I think KMH has a lot more potential for actually enjoying the games not just the look of it!

What had dropped off the radar in 2021?

Fire and Fury

Still keen to play and when I think about it playing at home we could perhaps play some of the bigger scenarios as I could set everything up before the game day and we would just have to play giving us more time. Ideally I'll get some games in this year.

The Men of Company B

I really like these rules and my collection but I haven't yet persuaded anyone else to try them and I tend to save my energy for games against actual opponents rather than solo games.

The Men who would be Kings

Another set of rules where I don't mind playing but with limited game time I've just not got around to playing.

Black Seas

As mentioned above I suspect I will prefer KMH so I can't see me playing these again.

What could be added in 2022?

Bag the Hun

I'm interested in trying these TFL rules for WW2 air combat. Having bought a copy of 'Check your 6!' and found them extremely complicated while 'Wings of Glory WW2' is a bit simplistic I'm hoping BtH will be somewhere between the two!

LaSalle

Sam Mustafa's lower level version of Blucher looks interesting but seems rather more complicated than Blucher. Given how much I like Blucher I'm not sure I'll try these much but might give them a go.
