a (film) photo taken in January that i just recently got around to processing... (filmaĵa) foto, kiun mi fotis en januaron kaj kiun mi nur lastatempe ellaboris....

spring is coming, but it isn't spring yet. it's still fairly cold in the morning and at night and there are still days when it's cold all day. last friday, when i took these photos, was an especially cold day and so i decided that Fae should wear the purple knit sweater that we had made for her months ago. it's exactly like the orange sweater that she modeled months ago, so it fits well, but....


 Fae has gotten a bit more... *cough*pudgy*cough* around her tummy area, so i couldn't comfortably button up the last button. Fae, maybe you need to go on a diet!


there is some good news, though! the reason why Fae hasn't often worn her orange sweater since she modeled it is because she kept licking it and fuzzing it up, but that wasn't a problem this time around. she wore her sweater for most of the day without problem. :)



oh, and i mustn't leave out Iggy! Iggy wore the coat that i made him and he looks more handsome in it every day. ;) i think he might have been a little jealous of Fae's sweater, though. :P

ho, kaj mi ne forgesu Iggy-n! Iggy surhavis la mantelon, kiun mi faris por li kaj ĉiutage li aspektas pli kaj pli bela en ĝi. ;) sed mi pensas, ke eble li estis iom ĵaluza pro la pulovero de Fae. :P

on Monday July 11th we drove Fae and Iggy to the Cat's Meow in preparation for our trip to Singapore. the drive took around 45mins and on the way Iggy got really nervous. so nervous that he threw up his breakfast & even pooed a little in his carrier. :(( Fae was very nervous too, but Iggy a lot more so, understandably. we had only gotten him a month before and that required an agonizing (for Iggy) 2 hour drive....

lunde la 11a de julio ni veturigis aŭte Fae-n kaj Iggy-n al la Cat's Meow por prepari vojaĝi al Singapuro. ni veturis dum ĉ. 45 minutoj kaj laŭvoje Iggy fariĝis ege nervoza. tiel nervoza, ke li vomis sian matenmanĝaĵon kaj eĉ iome fekis en sia portilo. :(( ankaŭ Fae estis tre nervoza, sed kompreneble Iggy estis multoble pli pro ni adoptis lin nur 1 monato antaŭe kaj tiam li devis veturi aŭte dum 2 teruregaj (por Iggy) horoj....

once we got Iggy cleaned up and checked them in, things looked up... kind of. the suite was very nice with a heated room including a tunnel, bed, litter trays and a little box thing for them to hide in. the attached enclosed garden was an immediate fav.

upon letting Fae out of her carrier all of her nervousness seemed to turn to anger. she was hissing and spitting and growling all over the place, even at Iggy. :/ the owner of the cattery had several of her cats there wandering around freely who also felt Fae's fury, although they handled it with ease as they were probably used to it.

Iggy was smart and immediately went up onto a high perch in the garden and stayed out of Fae's way. there was a talkative Burmese(?) in the garden suite across the hall from theirs whom Iggy seemed to take a liking to.

we stayed with them for about 30 minutes trying to help them both calm down and settle in. Iggy was shivering (for various reasons knowing Iggy), so we gave him lots of love & attention + put one of the blankets that we'd brought with us on him since he loves them.

we tried to comfort Fae too, but that was hard to do with very limited success. at least she had lots to distract her, like the horses wandering in the fields outside, birds, plants etc, but then she found the food dish....... they were given a constant supply of "premium" dry food and Fae turned to stuffing her face in it right away, as to be expected of a gluttonous Devon Rex. i swear "gluttony" should be every Devon's middle name. can you imagine how much weight she put on???

sadly, we had to leave the still nervous Fae & Iggy behind. :( we requested access to the webcam that was installed into their room, but sadly it wasn't working at the time. we worried about them during the entire trip, but was glad that they were in a nice place. tomorrow i'll post photos from when they finally came back home!

bedaŭrinde ni devis forlasi Fae-n k Iggy-n ĉe la kat-hotelo. :( ni petis atingon al la interreta kamero, kiu estis instalita en ilia ĉambro, sed bedaŭrinde tiam ĝi ne funkciis. dum la tuta vojaĝo ni zorgis pri ili, sed ni estis feliĉaj ĉar ili restis en bona loko. morgaŭ mi afiŝos fotojn de kiam ili finfine revenis hejmen!

Fae finally did it! as an ice breaker Fae slowly went up to him, settled down and proceeded to try to clean him but Iggy wasn't having that... WHY?? men.... *shakes head* after several tries and several nips + glares from Iggy she finally just curled up and went to sleep. thankfully Iggy at least allowed that. hmph!


on a much more serious note, last night we had a really big scare. Iggy and Fae were chasing each other back and forth all over the place as usual and somehow Fae got her head caught in one of the blind cords.... i heard weird noises and ran to see what happened and found Fae frantically gasping & kicking while hanging from the cord by her head... her feet couldn't reach the ground. if neither of us had heard her or if this had happened while we weren't home..................... let this be a lesson to all with cats and blinds or dangling cords of any kind. such cords can be deadly.

kaj multoble pli serioze, la pasintan nokton okazis grandega teruro ĉe ni. kiel kutime Iggy kaj Fae ĉaskuradis unu la alian tra la tuta apartamento kaj iele la kapo de Fae kaptiĝis per krodo de ĵaluzio..... mi aŭdis strangajn sonojn kaj kuris por vidi kio okazis. mi trovis Fae, kiu panikante spiraĉadis kaj piedbatadis la aeron dum ŝi pendis sur kordo per la kapo... ŝia piedoj ne povis atingi la plankon. se ni ne aŭdis ŝin aŭ se tio okazis, kiam ni ne hejme estis.......................... ĉi tio estu leciono por ĉiuj, kiuj havas katojn kaj ĵaluzioj aŭ aliaj pendantaj kordoj. tiaj kordoj povas esti mortigaj.

before bringing Iggy into the apartment, the other human went up and closed Fae in our bedroom. we still had nothing at all for Iggy, so he ran off to the petstore while i brought Iggy upstairs and closed us both in the spare bedroom (Fae's favorite room btw). of course Fae heard his arrival as he was very loud about it. ^^;

like Fae, Iggy loves his food more than anything.

immediately upon being let out of the box Iggy explored every place low & high in the room. places that Fae had never tried to reach or had reached with difficulty Iggy reached with ease! he's obviously an experienced climber and explorer. when we finally had dishes to give him food and water he ate as if he had been lost in a desert for weeks! i guess he hadn't been fed/given water that day...? he's currently on Science Diet because that's what the RSPCA feeds its animals, but i intend to transition him to raw as soon as i get our vet's approval.

anyway, eventually Fae was let out of our bedroom and she immediately went to the spare room door which had never been closed before. at one point the door was barely open a crack when both of them were at it and they both had their first good whiff of each other.

poor Iggy got a little scare from Fae, but he quickly bounced back not overly fazed. he is use to dealing with other cats and has confidence. Fae, on the other hand, was very miffed and confused. she hasn't attacked the door again like that since then, but she does hiss & spit a bit whenever she's at the door and knows Iggy's on the other side.

anyway, Iggy's first night went fine. i discovered that: Iggy LOVES string; he is SUPER affectionate and is gentler about it than Fae (ie. no biting); he is VERY demanding about his food, just like Fae; his voice is very similar to Fae's. i spent the night in the guest bed with him curled up in Fae's favorite spot next to me under the blanket... i see fights over this in the  future!

yesterday went about the same except without Fae attacking the door. Iggy is pretty laid back (excluding food related matters) and is taking things very well. Fae, on the other hand.... i could write a whole seperate post on how Fae is handling things and i think i will. stay tuned!

in the meantime, if anyone has any advice on introducing cats to each other it would be much appreciated. we intend to take things slow but could use some ideas on how to progress with it. thanks in advance!

introducing Iggy! a 1year & 4 month old black smoke Devon Rex. as some of you guessed in my previous post, he is to be Fae's new friend/brother. we're super glad to have him. :)) like everyone, Iggy has a story.... here's his (as far as i know it):

Iggy had a loving family with other cats, a dog and a kid(s) but sadly he got very sick and his owner surrendered him to the RSPCA (Americans, think ASPCA). you see, Iggy has a very strange and terrible allergy. :( he was somehow allergic to one of his previous owner's cats (a fellow Devon!) but not to the other cat! his skin broke out terribly and he lost a lot of his fur. at the RSPCA he was put into foster care while his health improved and this is where our adoption story begins...

i have mentioned here how we felt that Fae had been acting rather lonely/lethargic lately... this lead me to casually browsing adoption/for sale listings looking for potential friends for Fae. i wasn't seriously looking because i was still very uncertain as to whether Fae would be alright with another cat and our lease only allowed for one. anyway, 3ish weeks ago i was browsing the RSPCA database (for those who don't know, i volunteer at the RSPCA) and i found Iggy's file. The photo was horrible because Iggy looked horrible when it was taken, but I was in love! BUT i kept Iggy to myself. for the next week I tired to forget about him.

he has to smell everything, of course.

a week goes by and i couldn't stand it anymore. me and the other human already agreed that Fae was acting strange-- even more so then than previously-- and we both concluded that a friend might be a good thing for her if we could find one that was suitable. well, i started casually mentioning Iggy and eventually showed Iggy's file to the other human. he liked Iggy too but we were still undecided and went back and forth on the issue for the next week.

this past sunday i woke up determined to call the RSPCA to at least find out how he was doing at his foster home and let them know that someone was interested in him. i was worried because if he wasn't recovering welll he would probably end up being euthanized and even if he were recovering well they may euthanize him anyway if they deem his condition too hard to find a home for.... i wanted them to know that someone was interested in him despite his condition.

upon calling the RSPCA, i was told that his condition was improving but he still wasn't well. as i had feared, the person on the other end of the line voiced concern about him being adopted because even though his breed was very desirable his condition was not. she wasn't sure when/if he would leave his foster home and become available for adoption, but she said that she would keep me updated on his condition. :)

the next day (this past monday) i received a call from another person at the RSPCA. again i was told about his condition-- that it is something that he would possibly need lifelong treatment for etc-- and then i was asked if i wanted to meet him. of course i jumped at the opportunity, despite the fact that Iggy was at a shelter 2hrs drive away! i told the person that we would come on thursday.

fast forward to yesterday, the day of the most exciting and anxious roadtrip ever! we drove to Toowoomba, a small mountain town west of Brisbane. it was the farthest west i've been in Queensland yet and was a really interesting ride, but i'll skip that part. :P we arrived at the small RSPCA shelter sometime around 2pm and was taken to meet Iggy who had been brought back to the shelter and was staying in a kennel in the cattery.

talk about a talkative cat! i thought Fae was really talkative, but Iggy takes the cake. he wandered around free in the small cattery talking up a storm and exploring everything while we watched and talked to the adoptions person. even in the environment that was the kitten-filled cattery Iggy had quite the personality. we loved him and decided to take him home with us. :) after filling out some paperwork we made the 2hr trek home with a very scared/angry and LOUD Iggy in a box in my lap (see previous post). it was a very, VERY long ride home.........

it does, however, inhibit something else...

for those who don't know already, Fae can be a little terror when it comes to food. she's gotten much better since we first got her, but still eating and cooking around her is like having a whiny toddler constantly at your feet and attempting to steal your food. ANY food (except maybe salad) that she can get her mouth on she will.

por tiuj, kiuj ankoraŭ ne scias, Fae estas terura pri manĝaĵo. ŝi fariĝis multe pli bona ol kiam ni adoptis ŝin, tamen ŝi ankoraŭ estas tre ĝena kiam oni manĝas aŭ kuiras. estas kvazaŭ krieganta infano ĉiam estas ĉe via piedoj kaj ĉiam klopodas ŝteli vian manĝaĵon. IAN AJN manĝaĵon (eble escepte de salato), kiun ŝi povas manĝi ŝi manĝos.

anyway, 2 days ago i made quesadillas and stupidly left an open package of shredded cheese on the kitchen counter... a few minutes later i heard a noise in the kitchen, went to check it out and there was Fae with her head in the bag chowing down. i have no idea how much she ate, but that night she obviously wasn't feeling well. she parked herself on a pillow and would hardly move. i could have dressed her in cat clothing and she wouldn't have fought me, that's how bad she was. needless to say i was worried, but thankfully she felt better the next morning. however, it's been 2 days now and she hasn't pooed and she's been crying more, so i think she's constipated as that's what often happens to humans who eat too much cheese.

ĉiuokaze, antaŭ 2 tagoj mi  kuiris "kesadijojn" kaj stultege forgesis fermi kaj remeti sakon da erigita fromaĝo en fridujon, forlasinte ĝin en la kuirejo.... post kelkaj minutoj mi aŭdis sonon en la kuirejo kaj iris por vidi kio okazis. mi vidis, ke la kapo de Fae estis tute en la sako de fromaĝo manĝante feliĉe. mi ne scias, kiom da fromaĝo ŝi manĝis, sed tiun nokton ŝi fariĝis malsana. ŝi kuŝis sur kuseno kaj apenaŭ moviĝis. mi povus eĉ vesti ŝin per vestoj por katoj kaj ŝi eĉ ne batalus kontraŭ mi-- ŝi estis tiele malsana. kompreneble mi tri zorgis pri tio, sed dankinde ŝi pli bone fartis la sekvan matenon. tamen, jam pasis 2 tagoj kaj ŝi ankoraŭ ne fekis kaj ŝi krias pli ofte ol kutime. mi pensas, ke fekado fariĝis malfacila por ŝi pro tro multe da fromaĝo, same kiel por homoj.

tonight i gave Fae a little butternut squash because i've been told that pumpkin & squash helps with constipation. i cut it up and boiled it in a little water with a little butter and then smashed it up and gave Fae a little once it had cooled. she absolutely LOVED it. it's the first time i've given Fae a veggie and it was cool to see that she absolutely adored it. since Fae only needed a little there was some left for us humans, so i added a little milk to it and we ate it all up. i must say that i adored it too. :) hopefully it'll help Fae feel better.

ĉi nokte mi donis al ŝi malmulte da kukurbo, kiu nomiĝas "butternut"a kukurbo ĉar iu diris al mi, ke kukurbo estas bona por tiu malsano. mi tranĉis kaj boligis ĝin en malmulte da akvo kun malmulte da butero kaj poste dispremis ĝin. mi donis malmulte da ĝi al ŝi kiam ĝi malvarmiĝis kaj ŝi TUTE amegis ĝin. estas la unua fojo por mi doni al ŝi legomon kaj estis mojose vidi, ke ŝi tiom multe amis ĝin. restis iom da kukurbo por ni homoj ĉar Fae bezonis nur tre malmulte, do mi aldonis iom da lakto al ĝi kaj ni finmanĝis ĝin. ankaŭ mi amegis ĝin. :) espereble ĝi helpos ŝin farti plibone.

yesterday we tried to block off the balcony with wire so that there wouldn't be a repeat of the other day when Fae met another cat and went crazy. well, after our first attempt at it the same cat (Poppy, one of our neighbor's cats) got through the wire and onto our balcony again at like 4am..... i just happened to be up and whisked Fae away before she could go crazy again. after that we kept Fae in our bedroom with us until we got up for good and improved upon the wiring. now things seem to be fine, but Fae is still weary of another cat encounter.

hieraŭ ni provis bari nian balkonon per metalfadeno por ke la aliataga okazaĵo (angle), kiam Fae hazarde renkontis alian katon kaj freneziĝis, ne denove okazos. nu, post nia unua provo la sama kato (Poppy, unu el la katoj de nia najbaro) iele trairis la metalfadenon kaj venis denove al nia balkono je 4atm.... tute ŝance mi estis veka kaj haste prenis Fae for de la fenestro antaŭ ol ŝi denove freneziĝis. post tio, ni fermis Fae en nia dormĉambro kun ni ĝis ni finfine tute vekiĝis kaj plibonigis la metalfadenan barilon. nun ĉio bonas, tamen Fae ankoraŭ maltrankviliĝas iome....



that aside, there seems to be certain things that Fae enjoys. for example, cat yoga on her scratching post and gazing out the spare room window. :)

ĉiuokaze, ŝajnas ke Fae havas kelkajn ŝatokupojn. ekzempe, kat-jogon sur ŝia gratilo kaj rigardegado eksteren de la dua dormĉambra fenestro. :)

not sure where to start with this entry, so i guess i'll start by saying that the first 24hrs with ____ have been better than i could've expected. i guess because i got my previous two cats as kittens i couldn't help but expect atleast some problems/broken stuff, but she's been absolutely wonderful. <3
