Alex Jennings & Karate Valentino

Who is in the photo at right?

That’s Karate Valentino, aka Mr. Boy, aka, Medium Baby. He’s a boxer/shar pei mix, and I’m convinced that he is the best dog in the history of dogs—and not just because dogs don’t much remember the past. He is 3 going on 4 at the end of August!

And that’s me in the photo, too. My name is Alex Jennings, and I’m an author/teacher/performer who has been living in New Orleans for the past—hm—sixteen years, now.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Usually, Karate and I take our coffee at home, but we live nearby a community green space called The Lafitte Greenway. Our favorite local coffee company, French Truck, has a café there, so sometimes we stop in to buy beans and a pastry or two, and give the local folx a chance to shower Karate with admiration and pets.

What’s brewing?

Almost always French Truck, and in the warmer months, I use my Toddy to make cold brew concentrate that I’ll then mix with a bit of water, some oat milk, and Splenda. And, of course, I’m brewing up my second novel, so may God have mercy on my poor soul!

Any treats?

Karate looooves his dried lamb’s lungs, but he’s also deeply appreciative of Cheez-its and white cheddar Cheetos. He deserves all these things, as he is the Best Boy, but we try not to overdo it.

How were you and Karate united?

During the first few months of the Pandemic, my roommate Kytara and I were overwhelmed by that buried-alive feeling of being stuck in our apartment trying to be good citizens, knowing even as we did that Covid 19 wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon. I was feeling pretty bad about the Covid weight I’d gained, and we decided that we needed something to cut through that loneliness and despair and help us be more active. We started looking for a dog and Karate wasn’t the first one we tried for, but when I saw his photo on the Animal Rescue of New Orleans (ARNO) website, I sensed that he was my dog.

We went out to Harahan, which was relatively distant to us as neither of us drives or has a car, and as we walked Karate (then erroneously named “Soldier”), I began to worry that we wouldn’t be able to complete the adoption on the spot and that I’d be separated from this guy who was clearly our dog. It turned out ARNO was able to get the paperwork done right away, and the three of us were frolicking together that same day.

How did Karate get his name?

I’m a fan of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and there’s a song created for the show called “The Day Man.”

The chorus is as follows:
Day Man
Fighter of the Night Man
You’re a master of Karate
And friendship
For everyone
So, in my mind, Karate and friendship go hand-in-hand, and Karate is definitely my best friend, so that part of his name came naturally. We’re also very much a queer household with a lot of respect for ballroom culture, so Karate is named for one of the great houses. I will say, though, that he’s barely able to vogue, and his death-drop skills are… questionable.

Does Karate do more to help or hinder your writing?

Karate 100 percent enables my decadent and indolent authorial lifestyle. When we got him, he had heart worms, (and ARNO paid for his treatment) so he was low-energy, but once he was over his illness, he was still very mellow. He had just come out of puppyhood when we got him, and he’s always been pretty distinguished, so he spends much of his time lolling on the sofa or curled up in his bed while I hunch maniacally over my laptop keyboard.

Has Karate inspired you to create any fictional canines?

Oh, definitely. Last year (I think it was last year, but what is time?) I wrote a horror story called “Them Doghead Boys” that was published in, of all places, Current Affairs magazine. The story was set in our New Orleans neighborhood and involved a sort of corrupted and diluted brand of lycanthropy where those who contract it remain mostly human but gain the heads of dogs. Karate was the model for our illustration, and I so loved seeing him rendered in black-and-white with his soulful eyes and august wrinkles.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Cat, for sure. Every time we go out, Karate is hoping to make friends with a cat. He’s a lover, not a fighter, so I don’t think he’s interested in harming them, but cats have generally made it clear to him that they don’t want him within three feet, so unless Kytara or I get a cat, I don’t think he’ll ever have a chance to live his dream.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

This one is a little embarrassing as I feel like we haven’t done a great job teaching Karate to play. He is basically unmoved by balls or squeaky toys, and maybe that’s because he considers them beneath his dignity. Every once in a while, he’ll play with a stick, but honestly, if it’s not flavored in any way, he loses interest pretty quickly.

Who is Karate’s best pet pal?

The local poet Shaina Monet is a good friend of mine, and her black lab, Booker sometimes has play-dates with Karate. The two of them got along from the start, even though Book was much more of a puppy when they met. They have a good time together, for sure.

If Karate could change one thing about New Orleanians, what would it be?

Honestly, if he was Emperor of the Universe, all New Orleanians would be made of cheese so that he could get pets, cuddles, and treats from the same exact source.

If Karate could answer one question in English, what would you ask him?

When Kytara and I board you because we’re both traveling, are you aware that we’re coming back and that you are still very much ours?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Karate could speak, who would voice him?

This one’s easy: Keith David.

What advice would Karate give if asked?

“Just chill. No reason to get worked up, just take life as it comes—unless there’s a very loud engine, in which case, you should lose yore effin mind!”

Melissa Scholes Young & Huckleberry Nacho Finn

Who is in the photo at right?

I'm Melissa Scholes Young. I'm a writer and a teacher. This is the dog who picked me, Huckleberry Nacho Finn Scholes Young. He sits on my feet while I write books. We think he's about four years old. He's a chocolate lab/Pit Bull/Boxer/Love of my life mutt.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

We're on our way to the dog park. He let's me take him as a reward if I make his morning chicken just right.

What's brewing?

Nespresso. Dry cappuccino with skim milk. Huck prefers his with whipped cream.

Any treats for you or Huck on this occasion?

I'm enjoying a salad and Huck is enjoying the salmon that used to be on top of my salad.

How were you and Huck united?

He chose me at a Lucky Dog adoption event. He leaned in. If you've ever had a dog lean in and claim you, you know the rest.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

I grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, Mark Twain's boyhood home, so I'm a big literary fan of Twain's. Huck just seemed to be a Huck, but the first time he ate an entire stick of butter off of our table Huckleberry Finn came out of my mouth in a certain tone that Widow Douglass would have used. My youngest daughter added the Nacho part to his name. He mostly goes by Huckanoodles and Good Boy.

Does Huck do more to help or hinder your writing?

He sits on my feet and makes me sit and stay. He reminds me to take breaks and walk him. He lets me throw his ball while I'm working out plot points in my mind. He snores a lot and there seem to be a lot of snoring dogs in my scenes.

Has Huck inspired the creation of any fictional dogs?

Yes. The novel I'm working on now has a Nacho in it. Nacho prefers sticks to balls but whatever.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Bunnies.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Ball. Ball. Ball.

Where is Huck's favorite outdoor destination?

Our woods. Anywhere there is water.

Who is Huck's best pet-pal?

Cinder. She's also from Lucky Dog Rescue and she is Huck's everything. She likes to play rough.

What is Huck's best quality?

He is absolutely the best listener ever.

If Huck could change one thing about Marylanders, what would it be?

They think their dogs have behavior problems. They're really only owner problems.

If Huck could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

Do you know how much I adore you?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Huck could speak, who should voice him?

Matthew McConaughey with a southern accent.

What advice would Huck give if asked?

Don't work so hard. Take more naps.

Janelle Fitzpatrick & Harper and Thor

Who is in the photo at right?

Harper (Boxer, girl, almost 3) and Thor (Rhodesian Ridgeback, boy, almost 3).

Janelle Fitzpatrick, creator of The Stair Barrier and owner of Better Options Company.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Working on the back porch with a little help from my 4 legged babies…who don’t quite fit on the couch.

What's brewing?

Starbucks vanilla coffee with vanilla creamer frothed!

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

Harper has been very sick the last few weeks and pretty much refuses to eat anything but fresh roast beef….so breakfast for her was roast beef and medicine. Thor got the leftovers.

How were you and your dogs united?

My husband and I actually met while he was walking our old ridgeback (Harley) when she was just a puppy. It is a solid and true way to pick up the chicks! We got a boxer (Olivia) a year later. Olivia died way too young and Harley was set in her ways—she was used to being first kid and when we had our children, she just never attached to them the way they wanted. About 6 months after Harley passed (my kids had been asking for years, every letter to Santa, birthday wish, etc. for a puppy), my husband and I decided to surprise our children with a puppy for each of them. It was one of the best days ever! We said we were going to the apple orchard to pick apples, but we got lost and stopped at a house for directions (with GPS, my kids weren’t buying it…but nevertheless it was all I had) and I walked out with Harper. They were absolutely freaking out. Then I said, “Now we are going to pick apples” and then we drove to get Thor and there were Ridgeback puppies running everywhere—the kids were on to me at this point. Harper and Thor were actually born on the same day, 20 minutes apart. My husband and I had already met both of them prior. Thor was the biggest, calmest (at the time) lover—he just kept coming over for attention. Harper—just that face, it was love at first sight.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Harper is named after Bryce Harper (my son’s favorite baseball player) and Thor is after…the almighty Thor/Chris Hemsworth movie, because he was so big. The funny thing is Thor is the biggest baby ever. He literally cries all day about everything; it is exhausting, but funny. He is a huge wimp; Harper is half his size and just rules his world. She rules all of us. It is her world and we just live in it. Harper is called Slumpy and Slumpster, because with her sad eyes she looks sad and it is just fun to say.

Do your dogs have a role at The Stair Barrier headquarters?

When I worked out of my house, I would say Harper was head of HR and Thor was my IT guy. We are currently looking for more space and something closer to my house. I am hoping to be able to bring at least one to work daily.

What is each dog's best quality?

Thor is just a huge lover and very protective of the family. He is the biggest baby except when he thinks someone is being hurt. Harper is so smart and feisty, such a huge personality.

If your dogs could change one thing about about you, what would it be?

That I worked less and was home more. Luckily my husband works from home and takes such great care of them.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

Thor—why do you cry all the time? Harper—Do you really think you are the boss around here? I don’t know the answer to Thor, but Harper would say Yes!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, who should voice them?

So funny….we talk for our dogs all the time in the craziest voices. I am not a naturally funny person, but my kids crack up when I talk for the dogs (which I do daily). Thor—would be Scooby Doo or Owen Wilson (I think he did the voice for Marmaduke). Harper, would be Martin Lawrence as Big Momma (in Big Momma’s House).

What advice would your dogs give if asked?

Thor would say to “eat more beef” and Harper would say, “work less, play more.”

Kate Barker & Molly and Duke

Who is in the photo at right?

Hi, I’m Kate Barker. My Sweet Husband and I own Oregon Street Antique Mall in Redding, California. We’ve been married forty-nine years this January. We’ve had three boxers. This gal’s name is Molly…she’s a fabulous guard dog and gentle companion to her little brother and all of our grandchildren. She’s five. The little guy I’m holding is Duke…he’s a Chiweenie (Doxie-Chihuahua mix). He’s the baby…only three years old, very alert, fun-loving and affectionate…and loves playing with Molly.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

We’re getting ready for a trip to Portland, Oregon. Takin’ our tea and coffee and our doggies! Oregon is a dog-loving state! They give doggie treats at all the gas stations…and most hotels do not mind if you have your dog with you. (Best to check first though, ‘cause there are some that aren’t able to accommodate dogs.

What's brewing?

My Sweet Husband is a fan of straight-up coffee…no flavors. I love tea…some flavored, but mostly just a robust black tea. In summer, we both devour lots of iced tea.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

We usually make a stop in Central Point, Oregon to pick up some delicious handmade chocolates at LillieBelle Farms Artisan Chocolates.

No chocolates for the puppies, of course! We carry our own goodies for them…but Molly doesn’t like to eat on the road…only after we settle in someplace. Duke eats any where, any time! Once, at an outside restaurant in St. Helens, Oregon, he had his own doggie version of spaghetti and meatballs [photo left].

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Our older boxer’s name was Max…and when we got the boxer puppy, Max and Molly just sounded good together. The Chiweenie was so tiny when we got him, we thought he needed a big name. Oldest Grandchildren thought of Marmaduke, but I was thinking of John Wayne. The puppy must have read our minds, cause he doesn’t know he’s a little dog! He’s got a big personality!

About how many times per year do you hear that you've got a great last name for a dog-lover?

Oh, Lots! And our entire family loves dogs…so it sure fits!!

How were you and your dogs united?

We were looking for a boxer puppy for our older Max to help raise. He was such a calm, quiet dog. Don’t know what happened…. Molly’s not like that at all…but she’s lots of fun. And a great guard dog…. Max cared more about making friends than standing guard.

Our little dog was born to a rescue long-haired Doxie. The gal who rescued her had no idea she was pregnant. Duke was one of those puppies and we offered to take him. We were happy to have a small dog again. He’s a joy…and added lots of laughter to our lives.

Cat, postman, squirrel....?

Molly loves other creatures…she’s curious about most and wants to make friends. But, she’s not keen on people she doesn’t know. Once we give the OK, she’s usually fine, unless they’re wearing a baseball cap or a hoodie. Then we have to work a bit harder to assure her they’re friends! Duke loves all people and most critters, except he’s decided his job is to keep birds out of our yard!

Squeaky-toy, ball, stick...?

Both dogs love to play…catch balls, fetch or chew up squeaky toys or chase one another…sometimes they just entertain one another.

Where is your dogs' favorite outdoor destination?

They are both great travelers and seem happy wherever we go. Probably, they love our ranch the best. Wide open spaces, many different smells and critters and lots of exploring. In the winter, coming inside to lie down near the wood stove is tops!

Who are your dogs' best pet-pals?

They’re crazy about our daughter and son-in-law’s two Labs, Dozer and Emma and little Gracie. They also love to play with our son and daughter-in-law’s Lab Sandy, German Short-Hair, Mickey, and little Dachshund, Spots.

What is each dog's best quality?

Molly is loyal and loving and fantastic with children of all ages. We always know when a baby has pooped, cause Molly follows him/her around until someone changes the diaper! If a baby is crying, she won’t leave it’s side and whines until someone comes and picks up the baby. Duke is friendly and playful and everybody loves him!

If your dogs could change one thing about Californians, what would it be?

Slow down already! Smell the roses, enjoy the sunshine, have some fun!!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, which actors should do their voices?

Maybe Katherine Heigl for Molly…kind and loving, but could be ferocious if necessary!

For Duke, of course, John Wayne, but since he’s no longer with us, maybe…Sam Elliott or Hugh Jackman…(as the Drover in the movie Australia).

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

Are ya happy?

What advice would your dogs give if asked?

Molly:You all should play more-chase me!

Duke: Have some fun-let's explore!

Caroline Cowen & Fenway

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Caroline Cowen and my dog is Fenway. She is a two year old rescue who we believe to be a lab, boxer, hound and pitbull mix. We own and operate Fenways Runway. There are lots of photos of her at the site or by using #fenwaysrunway on Instagram or Facebook.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Coffee is life blood when you work with animals. We always have a coffee in the morning on the way to the dog park!

What's brewing?

Starbucks Christmas blend k cups!

Any goodies to go with the coffee?

A homemade fruit smoothie.

How were you and Fenway united?

We rescued her through lost dog rescue foundation. I now volunteer for them occasionally.

Any treats for Fenway on this occasion?

She's had her morning treat after going potty this morning.

How did Fenway get her name?

I was born and raised in Boston, what more can I say?

Does she have any nicknames?

Fen, feng shui, snuggle butt, little love.

Tennis ball, stick, squeaky-toy...?

Fox or giraffe are her favorites at home- if we're at the park a tennis ball or stick will do. She would always prefer to play with another dog though.

Postman, cat, squirrel...?

She could care less about squirrels cats or bunnies, she doesn't bark ever, but she's been known to growl at a plastic bag or a baseball hat.

Where is Fenway's favorite place for an outing?

Great falls or the beach.

Who is Fenway's best pet-pal?

She loves so many dogs because we have so many friends stay with us!

What is Fenway's most endearing quality?

She will always love. She will snuggle and cuddle and love more than any animal I've ever met. She's very protective of me but of other animals as well.

If Fenway could change one thing about Virginians, what would it be?

Their bad driving habits.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Fenway could speak, who should voice her?

Great question, Isla Fisher.

If Fenway could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

What do you remember from the first 2 months of your life? (Before we rescued her.)

Janet Kellough & Joe and Smidgen

Who is in the photo at right?

I’m Janet Kellough and I write The Thaddeus Lewis Mysteries, a series based on mid-19th century Canadian history, the latest of which, The Burying Ground, will be released next year. With me are Joe, the more-or-less Boxer and Smidgen, the Blue Heeler –Something Else Australian cross. They’re both shelter dogs, so we don’t know for sure how old they are, but we figure seven or eight.

What’s the occasion for Coffee With a Canine?

Joe and Smidgey patrol the area around the house while I’m writing, but we all spend a lot of time outside. I have 50 acres in Prince Edward County, an island community on the north shore of Lake Ontario. We’re very rural, so there’s always lots to do, and when we’ve finished our work for the day we have a coffee on the veranda if the weather permits. Nothing fancy – just plain old coffee and water from the more-or-less bottomless pot.

How were you and your dogs united?

I had, sadly, reached the end of a dog cycle – the last old guy of the previous contingent died at the ripe old age of 14. But for me, home isn’t home unless it smells like wet dog, so after a few months I was ready for someone new. I like shepherding dogs so I went to a shelter that specializes in finding homes for Australian breeds – they’re super-intelligent and need lots to do, so sometimes it’s hard to place them. I knew I wanted Smidgen right away, but while there I realized that she was best buds with a woebegone boxer who had ended up at the shelter too. I didn’t know anything about boxers, but couldn’t bear to part them, so they both came home with me.

How did your dogs get their names?

Smidgen’s shelter name was “Midgey”, which I morphed into “Smidgey” because she’s such a little smidgen of a shepherd. Joe was already Joe and it just seemed to fit him. They have many other names, depending on the circumstances. Smidgey particularly loves being called “Sweetie Pie”.

Who are your dogs best pet-pals?

They sometimes play with their Golden Retriever friend Lola, but Joe and Smidgey really are each other’s best friend. They are always together. They spend a lot of time grooming each other. And on cold winter nights, they sleep curled up together in front of the woodstove.

How do your dogs help your writing?

While I’m lost in a world of my own making I count on them to let me know what’s happening in the real one – if the coyotes are too close, or the wild turkeys are ambling down the laneway again, and especially if a courier truck has arrived. (Some of the drivers have dog biscuits!!!!) One of the lovely things we do nearly every morning is walk down our country road. When it’s not tourist season only local traffic goes by, and people wave or honk, or sometimes pull their cars over for a chat. It’s one of those things that helps make our country township a real neighbourhood, and it puts me in a good mood before I start work.

What is each dog’s best quality?

Smidgey takes her job very seriously and supervises everything. I sometimes think she would like a clipboard and a whistle to help her organize everybody. Joe is a lot more impulsive, but he can be counted on to back her up. Unless it’s something really scary. But he’s the original King of Smoosh. He loves being hugged.

Have any actual dogs inspired fictional dogs in your writing?

I don’t like to put dogs in my stories, in case I end up in a plot corner and have to make something bad happen. I’ll bump (fictional) people off at the drop of a hat, but having something terrible happen to a dog is just way too upsetting! Even if it’s make-believe.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

You remember why we don’t go near skunks, right?

Helen Peppe & Pilot, Dancer, Runja, and Skye

Who is in the photo at right?

Helen Peppe, author of Pigs Can’t Swim and equine photographer, with her 7 yo female boxer, Pilot.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

I have 4 dogs, and I don’t take them to dog parks anymore because I don’t want them to pick up viruses, but I do walk them in the woods and fields nearby my home in Maine, and at a family’s cabin in New Hampshire. They do ride with me in my truck, however, and if I stop to pick up a drink and donut for my daughter, they always get a dog biscuit or two.

What's brewing?

I understand it is odd. Very odd. But I have never even tasted coffee. Occasionally, to try and fit in at social events, I will drink tea, but I don’t enjoy it. I drink ice water. Although, I do not have an attachment to the coffee bean, I do have an unshakeable attachment to the cocoa bean. I eat chocolate everyday, usually in the morning and at night. Sometimes in the afternoon, too, if it’s been one of those days.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

I feed my dogs raw. They love their meals. I divide their food so they can have a breakfast and a supper. Who would want to eat only once a day?! For treats, I feed them liver snaps, Canidae kibble, pieces of hotdog, and organic dog biscuits.

Do your dogs help or hinder your writing? Have they inspired any dogs in your fiction?

My dogs help and hinder. After I take them for a long walk, they’ll settle in my writing area, and I love them to be near me sleeping. If, however, it is rainy or too snowy and they don’t get a walk, they interrupt me constantly for attention. That’s when I break out the meat bones. They probably have caught on, which is why they continue to push their noses at me and climb onto my keyboard.

Yes, I always include my dogs in my writing. They inspire me to write. Period.

You are a photographer as well as a writer. Which are easier to photograph: dogs or horses?

Horses are easier to photograph because they don’t usually jump on me, get in my lap, or lick my face.

How did your dogs get their names? Any nicknames?

All females: My boxer’s name is Pilot. She is named after the Elton John song “Take Me to the Pilot.” My rescued dachshund/miniature schnauzer/poodle mix is named Dancer [photo right] after Elton John’s song “Tiny Dancer.” Skye, my youngest rescue, a dachshund/terrier mix, is named after Elton John’s song “Skyline Pigeon.” My three year old black German shepherd is named Runja. She is from her breeder's R litter and her name means run yes. I got her hoping she would be my running companion. She has some arthritis issues however, so she is just my all-around companion.

I used to have a pit bull mix named Wizard after Elton John’s version of “Pinball Wizard.” He died of a bone disease. He was supposed to be my running partner, too. I’ve since decided that it’s better for all of us if I have no job expectations for my dogs.

Regarding nicknames, I sometimes call Pilot, Pi and Runya, Run, but I think that’s more of a time shortage issue than an intentional nickname. Most often I don’t have to call them anything. They are always with me.

How were you and your dogs united?

The two rescues are the result of me failing at fostering. I bought Pilot when my daughter was 4 because I wanted an excellent dog with children and boxers are amazing that way. They happily put up with tons of gentle and not so gentle physical attention. I bought the German shepherd to run with because I wanted protection when I was out exercising in the evening.

Where do your dogs most like to visit on an outing?

They love to go to New Hampshire, my husband’s family’s cabin. There are hundreds of acres of fields and woods and a lake for them to swim. I put life jackets on them and we paddle all over the lake together.

Do the dogs have any non-canine pet pals?

Skye [photo left], the youngest rescue, loves the cats. She wrestles with them (sometimes they win), and they often sleep together on my bed.

Squeaky toy, ball, stick…?

Pilot is ball obsessive. I can’t let her have them for long or she’d never eat or sleep. She invents games where she puts the balls in shoes or buries them in a scatter rug and then finds them again. It’s not just balls, actually. She will obsess over apples, tomatoes, and rocks, too. Anything round. So I guess she is round obsessive. She talks to her squeaky toys.

Runja will chase anything. She’s not picky. The two little rescues will chew anything. They are not picky, but they clearly prefer dragging my clothes out of the laundry basket and into my writing studio.

What is each dog's best quality?

Runja’s loyalty and obedience.

Pilot’s goofiness.

Skye’s and Dancer’s playfulness. They are very funny.

If your dogs could change one thing about Mainers, what would it be?

That everyone in Maine would love to see them off leash having fun.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, which actors should do their voices?

Runja – Tina Fey.
Pilot – Janeane Garofalo.
Skye – Ellen DeGeneres.
Dancer – Marisa Tomei.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

Why can’t you ever let me sleep past 6:00 AM?!

Adriana & Lily

Who is in the photo at right?

I'm Adriana and I blog over at Dog Hair Is An Accessory. As you can tell by the title, I'm a dog owner! Lily is a boxer/pitbull/German shephard mix. She's almost 2! She is quite a handful (and a serious shedder) but she's the best!

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

When it's nice out it's fun to walk around downtown. Normally it's a ghost town but the P&G gymnastic championships were this past weekend so we wanted to go check things out!

What's brewing?

I'm more of an iced coffee person. And I actually was drinking a Starbucks Snickers Frappuccino! (It's a java chip frapp with 2 pumps of toffee and caramel and chocolate drizzle!)

Any treats for you or Lily on this occasion?

When we're out and about, Lil get's too distracted to eat! She's too nosey. She did get a cookie for being so good when we got back home!

How did Lily get her name? Any nicknames?

She was actually named after Harry Potter's mom! Weird and random, I know. But she hardly ever gets called Lily. It's usually Lil. Or Ting. Basically any ridiculous variation of those names, she's heard it.

How were you and Lily united?

It was my boyfriend's choice to get a dog. We both went and picked up Lil when she was only 9lbs and 8 weeks old at the humane society. My boyfriend has a friend that works there and she introduced us to Lil! Little did we know she'd be such a handful now!

Who are Lily's best pet-pals?

Well, she loves going to the kennel to play but she gets overwhelmed with too many dogs. She sort of tries to play with my grandmother's Bearded Collie but he usually wants nothing to do with her.

Squeaky toy, ball, stick...?

She will play fetch literally all day. Even if she's exhausted, if you throw a ball for her, she'll run after it. And quick!

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Lil is a city dog, so she hates city things: umbrellas, moving trucks, big packages and drunk college kids.

What is Lily's best quality?

I think her best is also her worst. It's that she wants to be with my boyfriend and I ALL. THE. TIME. She's needy but she just loves attention and affection. When she's calm enough she loves cuddling and is usually patient when I harass her with hugs and kisses.

If Lily could change one thing about you, what would it be?

She would make me a stay at home mom. Like I said, she wants attention all the time. Plus she has a ton of energy. Those things come together to make her very anxious.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Lily could speak, which actor should do her voice?

Definitely Amy Pohler. She's really good at being awkward and her fake British accent would be perfect. Lil is scatterbrained and ridiculous, so a comedian would be perfect.

If Lily could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

I'd have to ask her what it would take to listen to me when I wanted her too. She looks at me after asking her to do something and just turns back to doing what I told her not to. If there was something I could do to stop that and make her listen I would love to know what it is!

Debra Lockhart & Ray-Ray

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Debra Lockhart and I am a mother, grandmother, volunteer, a manager in a large bank, and a Pit Bull advocate. I am pictured here with my Ray-Ray who just turned 1 in December, but this picture was taken when he was much smaller. Ray is, according to his DNA test, an American Bulldog, Boxer, unidentified mix breed dog but according to his block head, he is a Pit Bull. I write a blog about Ray's escapades at Peaceabull Assembly, which refers to him and his kitty siblings co-existing here.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Ray and I get up early every morning to spend some bonding time before we start the day. On weekdays that can be anywhere between 4:30 and 5:30 am. Snuggles from Ray and a big pot of coffee are just the ticket to start the day right.

What's brewing?

It has to be Starbucks French Roast, whole bean and I grind them at home fresh every day and drink it black, no sugar.

Any treats for you or Ray on this occasion?

While my coffee is brewing, Ray and his kitty siblings line up for their morning treats of Duck flavored Carnivore Crunch.

How did you and Ray first meet?

I got a call from a friend of a friend who knew I was involved in rescue and also that I had a fondness for the bully breeds. She wanted to rehome her pregnant female, Sparkles, and her male dog, Kane, both of whom were living on a chain outside. As the Rescue was looking for placement, I got another call from the woman that the female was giving birth and that the puppies were dying. It was December 1st and 32 degrees outside. I left work to pick up her dogs and we got them into rescue where Ray and his sister were born.

How did Ray get his name? Any aliases?

I had been getting the urge to have a dog for quite a while but my husband wasn't sold on the idea yet. When we actually decided to adopt one of the "Sparkle pups" I suggested we name him Ray, after my husband's favorite football player, Ray Lewis. He also goes by Ray-Ray, Baby, Fat Head and Pup-Pup-a-roni.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Yes, yes, and yes. Ray loves all of the above and will play endlessly with them all.

Cat, mailman, squirrel...?

Ray loves his cats and would like nothing more than to play with them but unfortunately they don't share the sentiment. As for mailman and squirrel, Ray has really had no exposure to either.

Does Ray have a favorite place to go for outings?

Ray knows what it means to "go shopping." We visit our local Tractor Supply for some socialization and bully sticks nearly every week. We also visit several stores in the nearby city as often as we can.

Who are Ray's best pet-pal?

That would be our kitty, Jae, who often sits near Ray. The other two keep a pretty good distance.

What is Ray's best quality?

He is very smart and learns quickly, but I'd say the very best quality is his cuddliness. I love snuggling with Ray on the sofa and watching TV. He is an excellent cuddler.

If Ray could change one thing about your cats, what would it be?

He would want them to be more playful. He loves playing with kitty toys and I know he would love to play with the cats too.

If Ray could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

"Why are you obsessed with eating wood?"

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Ray could speak, who should voice him?

We'd have to step into the wayback machine, but I imagine Ray's voice to be like the little boy(s) who played Dominick in Kindergarten Cop.

Juliana Willems & Otis

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Juliana Willems. I work marketing and events at my local humane society, I foster mostly "pit bull" dogs and I document it all in my blog Peace, Love & Fostering. The dog with me in the photo is one of my former foster dogs Otis, a two year old mutt (American bull dog? boxer? pointer? pit bull dog?), who is currently staying with me while his forever dad is out of town.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Otis is a big baby and since he doesn't like doing anything without me I bring him along even for my morning coffee.

What's brewing?

Anything from Starbucks. Probably something seasonal - so right now a skim, no whip gingerbread latte.

Otis doesn't need coffee because he becomes instantly caffeinated whenever I return from being gone for more than 30 seconds.

Any treats for you or Otis on this occasion?

I try not to feed him in public so that his drool doesn't take over his entire being.

How did you and Otis first meet?

He was adopted by a friend of mine and it wasn't working out. I offered to dog-sit him when they went away for a weekend and, as you can probably guess, he never went back. I fostered him two separate times (one other adoption didn't work out, poor pup) until he found his perfect forever home. It was worth the wait, because he and his dad are the most perfect pair.

Would you share a bit of insight about your work with foster dogs?

In the past year I've had a handful of both long term and temporary fosters, including dogs from the rescue group I work with, Jasmine's House. Because I work at the county shelter I see how valuable fostering is to open up cage space for the homeless animals that pour in through our doors every day. My foster dogs have all picked me for one reason or another, and even though they've all been adopted, a part of each of them will stay with me forever.

How did Otis get his name? Any nicknames?

Otis came with his name. I absolutely hated it at first, but now I think it totally fits him. His full name when he was looking for a home was Honey Bunches of Otis, and some current nicknames include Oats, Otie, Otie-potie, and dumbo.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

None of the above. To quote Otie's owner: "Otis almost chased a squirrel today. When it ran in front of him he walked a little faster for a few strides."

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Again, none of the above. Your best bet is to take any of those things and cover them with peanut butter before presenting it to him.

Does Otis have a favorite place to go for walk?

Anywhere his human goes - otherwise, he prefers the couch.

Who is Otis's best pet-pal?

He shares a yard with a really cute female mutt-something. They flirt all the time, but they're still in the awkward "I'm pretending I don't really like you" phase. He also has a great BFF relationship with a cocker spaniel who is about 1/3 his size.

What is Otis's best quality?

He makes you feel like you're the coolest person in the world!

And he doesn't destroy the house when I leave (a quality you learn to seriously appreciate when you're continuously getting foster dogs who aren't used to living in a home).

If Otis could change one thing about you, what would it be?

He would probably try to make it so that I never went anywhere without him.

If Otis could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

Do you really think whining makes things all better?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Otis could speak, who should voice him?

Oh, definitely whatever actor played Napoleon Dynamite.

Maria Firkaly & Henry and Copper

Who is in the photo at right?

Maria Firkaly, Freelance Social Media Consultant, Jack of All Trades (Marketing, Development, Grant Writer) for a small non-profit in NorthWestern Pennsylvania, and amateur photographer.

Henry, the big black lummox, is an 11 month male Mastiff/Boxer/Labrador mix.

Copper, is a 6 year old female mutt. I asked my vet what he thought she was, and he said “She is like the typical yellow dog you find in a third world country.” Nice, huh?

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Sunday afternoon with the mutts at the Bark Park calls for some caffeine. Henry and Copper are a handful.

What's brewing?

Iced Coffee. When the weather gets warmer it’s a great treat in the afternoon. Maxwell House, Breakfast Blend with French Vanilla creamer, it was the best deal at the market recently. I make a full pot and keep some for later.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

I packed a picnic lunch for my two boys, fiancĂ© and I. Henry and Copper were so busy playing; they didn’t even try to find out what we were eating. We brought along some mini dog biscuits. Henry inhaled his. Copper was too excited and spit her treat out. Typical Copper.

How were you and your dogs united?

Copper is a pound puppy. My sons and I fell in love with her at our local shelter. She was 6 months old and had the most beautiful eyes. We took her home that same day.

My fiancĂ©, Matthew and I were out looking for a new pup last September. We had lost Matt’s dog, Chelsea to cancer earlier in July. Matt and Copper missed her so much. I knew it was time to add a new personality to the household. We were out visiting local shelters and stopped at a small convenience store in the middle of nowhere. On the front window was a flyer advertising a litter of puppies. Henry was “free to a good home” and I’m glad he’s in ours!

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Copper came with the name. When we first met Matthew kept calling her Cooper, so now she comes to either. She is Cooper the Pooper Scooper (I wish she scooped the poop!)

We had picked up some snacks at the convenience store the day we saw the flyer, one of which was an O’Henry candy bar. We decided to be extremely corny and name the new pup Henry. I fondly call him “Henny”.

Do your dogs have a favorite place to go for an outing?

Both dogs get excited when we offer a ride to the “Bark Park”. Copper is learning how to Dock Dive and loves using the pond at the Conneaut Lake Bark Park to practice.

Squirrel, postman, cat...?

For Copper, most definitely squirrel. She is a mighty hunter! Henry is a piece of work. He gets worked up by random objects, like the lawn cart. Oh Henry!

Squeaky toy, ball, stick...?

Henry is the toy lover. He is crated when we’re not home. As soon as we let him out of the crate he runs around and tries to fit all the toys from his crate into his mouth. He will also sneak any stick, the bigger the better, into the house.

Copper will only play with toys once Henry has sufficiently annoyed or enticed her with one. He will stand over her and force the toy into her mouth. Copper does get excited when fetching in water. She will happily dive into the lake and retrieve a stick, over and over again.

Who are your dogs' best pet-pals?

Up until two years ago, Copper was the only dog in our house. When Matt’s dog, Chelsea became ill last year, she moved in with us. Chelsea and Copper became very close and my girl was lost when Chelsea died. Copper took to Henry right away. She even taught him how to behave around our cat, Silver. Copper would run over and touch Henry’s nose and then the cat’s when he would play too rough.

Henry? Henry loves Copper, but he follows me around. I’d have to say he and I are best pals.

Both dogs are friendly and get along with other mild tempered dogs. We found a new friend at the Bark Park recently, Duke.

What is each dog's best quality?

Copper is a sweetheart. I’ve never had a more loving dog. No one can resist her pretty eyes!

Henry entertains us. This dog pours himself off the couch, oftentimes falling back asleep halfway down. We love his playful attitude.

If your dogs could change one thing about you, what would it be?

They would like it if I was able to work from home every day.

If your dogs could speak in the movie about your life, who should do their voices?

Will Farrell would be Henry’s voice. Henry has a doofy (cross between dumb and goofy) look on his face, which reminds us of the characters Will Farrell portrays.

Copper would be best voiced by Uma Thurman. She is sexy yet tough as nails.

Lana & Liyla, Belle, and Howdy

Who is in the photo at right?

The photo is of me, Lana, along with my lounging Liyla, Belle the Yorkie, and Howdy the Australian Shepherd. I am a retired Real Estate Broker turned Writer dedicated toward bringing awareness and support to those, like me, who have a rare disease called Addison's disease. I write candidly on my blog about this disease at my Finding Lana blog. Overall, it has been very rewarding to tackle this difficult subject and to reach out. Also, I write on my other "lighter" blog about our long time efforts to move from the Greater Houston area to the wooded country, it's fianlly happening. This blog signifies all that I "do" in life these days. Our house in the city went up for sale this week! So, we are living with all the craziness that goes with revamping our life-style from metropolitan to rural residents tucked in the middle of a forest in The Big Thicket of Texas. I'm very nervous, but thrilled about all the new things I'm doing in life! It's wonderful to have my doggie companions...Liyla is about eight years old, and she's part Boxer-part Collie mix; Belle the Yorkie is approximately two years old; and Howdy is a full-blooded Black-Tri Australian Shepherd, and he is about three and a half years old. I know all of our doggies will love moving to the country!

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Being Texan, we are addicted to our tea. However, I'm an odd Texan, having lived over five years of my younger life in Europe, I'm a bit different. Unlike most Texans, our household does not like iced tea, we like it room temperature. My husband, "Deputy Dave," makes us a fresh pot of tea, and brings me a mug of it every morning for over 25 years of marriage. My dogs are happy to have such a loving set of owners who enjoy their morning tea. Coffee is for special occasions, such as when the daughters are in town. During their visits, we love to sit and enjoy a delicious cup of Coffee con Leche as a night-time ritual. My grown gals think I can make a "designer" cup of coffee that beats Starbucks any day. We sit at the breakfast table, sipping our coffee as all five dogs lay calmly at our feet. I love those occasions the most. It's a beautiful thing.

What's brewing?

Lipton Green Tea or Folgers Breakfast Blend Coffee with different twists of flavor added, per daughter, such as hazelnut, french vanilla, or peppermint and always topped with freshly whipped cream made at home.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

Since I am from Texas, my personal favorite morning treats are stuffed jalapenos --- forget the bowl of cereal! The doggies sometimes get a special treat of scrambled eggs, freshly gathered from the laying hens in the backyard.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Liyla is our rescue dog. If a dog could be described as "beautiful," she's fits the description. Stefie, my youngest daughter, named her Liyla. However, this had initially been a slight problem because Heather, my oldest daughter, had wanted to name her "Lola." Since Heather was leaving for college and that meant leaving her little sissy behind at home, Stefie got to claim naming rights. Just so you know, the name "Lola" would never have worked as a name for this dog, especially because my beloved great-grandmother's name was Lola. I expect to have a grand-child one day named Lola, so our dogs cannot have the name. I certainly wouldn't want to be calling "Lola" and have both the three year old little grand-daughter of my future imaginings and old dog come running together at hearing their names! Since it sounded similar to "Lola," Stefie stuck with Liyla. And there you go for Liyla, our red-haired beauty who is growing older and wiser by the day.

The little Yorkie was also named by Stefie who wanted this sweet dog to have a Disney Princess name. She tried for "Rapunzel," but I refused to call a dog by a name that is a mouthful. Simple and sweet please! So, Stefie settled upon Belle as the name for our Yorkie. I do believe that Belle has the mind-set of a princess, so the name fits her perfectly. Even so, I must admit that Belle has days where she can be testy and I lovingly refer to her as "Bellatrix."

Then, Howdy, the full-blooded Australian Shepherd earned his name as our oldest daughter was graduating from Texas A&M with her Biology degree and our youngest daughter was enjoying her freshman year at Texas A&M as a Marine Biology major. A&M has a long-standing tradition of not letting another person pass them on campus without saying a robust, "HOWDY!" This dog lives up to his name in every respect. Never has a dog given us such enthusiastic greetings after we walk through the front door. Howdy Howdy!!

How were you and your dogs united?

About eight years ago, we found out about a person in our neighborhood who had a neglected litter of puppies in their backyard. I couldn't believe it was true until we went for "walks" and passed back and forth in front of this particular house as we tried to peer into the backyard through the chain-link fence...yes, we were stalking the house to find out whether or not the tale could be true. Indeed, there were several little starving pups in the backyard that were drinking water from a baby pool that was blackened by algae, their little ribs showed easily and it had gone round the neighborhood that if the people of the house could not find homes for the pups that week, they were to be dumped at an unknown location. Word spread and everyone began to adopt the dogs until there were none left at the house. The runt of the litter, the only female of the bunch and the only puppy to not have a Brindle coat was a reddish dog with a white chest. My daughters brought her home in their arms. Liyla was literally caked in mud, from head to toe and thirsty beyond measure. My husband, a police officer, was sleeping, so us three girls took the dog into the backyard and gave her a good scrubbing. Then, we woke the man up to meet the puppy, and he instantly fell in love.

After losing an apple-head Chihuahua we'd had for 16 years that had belonged to my oldest daughter, Heather, we could see that Liyla was very sad to be without her companion of six years. Two weeks after Cinnamon died from old age, at home, Liyla continued to wander around the house and sniffing around the backyard, trying to find her sweet Mama-Friend. Liyla would sit and literally moan with each exhale, it was pitiful. So, we began to look for another companion, but this time we'd get a dog that was larger than four pounds so play-time would not find the scales balanced too far either way. Knowing we would be moving from the city to acreage in the country, we also decided to get a dog suitable for a farm. After much research, we decided upon an Aussie. After further research, we found Howdy as a four month old puppy living on a ranch here in Texas with his stud-father as the lead working dog. Howdy had been born and raised on the ranch, from the moment he could run around; he grew up around cattle and other livestock. With several dogs to choose from, the lady of the ranch kept strongly suggesting that we take one of the other Aussies, but I had fallen head over heels with Howdy as he made his way to plop down in my lap, as if he'd known me forever. Our house goes up for sale this coming week and Howdy will finally be able to live on several acres of land here in Texas again. Our place in the country is a place he loves to visit, frequently. I'll be so happy for him to live out there full-time and to have all that running space...soon.

Belle the Yorkie showed up at our house after she'd been running around the neighborhood, desperate and filthy. My husband was outside washing his truck and the dog scared him half to death as it leapt into truck with him. She had been clearly neglected, had so many fleas with eggs attached to her fur that she'd become anemic. After doing our part to find an owner, we realized that someone must not have wanted the dog back...they obviously had not cared for the dog in any respect. The vet said she was too thin and, of course, anemic. We had her checked for a chip...nothing, so she became a member of our house where she gets to eat at her leisure and not worry about fleas. However, on the night that she found our family, she let us take her inside for a thorough washing, gentle dipping and lots of picking, without complaint. It was as if she were so thankful to be getting attention that she didn't even mind the soapy suds coating her body. She kept giving me kisses as we bathed her. Afterward, she was a brand new dog, but needed some behavior modification. She kept attacking the other two dogs who were about 40-50 pounds larger than her small frame. Thankfully, Liyla and Howdy are well mannered and patient, they seemed to pick up on her need for loving guidance. After a couple of months and heavy supervision, she quit going for an attack upon the other dogs and the chickens in the backyard. These days, she lives in peace with both the chickens and the dogs. She still has a feisty character, but with a lot of love, she's been assured that everything is really okay! Now, she fits right in and is one happy little gal.

Do your dogs have a favorite place to go for an outing?

For years, our dogs have always loved going to our acreage in The Big Thicket of Texas. As we are hitching up the utility trailer with the tractor and tools, they are running to fetch their leashes because they know where we're going. We can hardly keep them from running to the truck and jumping into the backseat prematurely because they are so thrilled to be going to their favorite place. Once we turn onto the private road on our acreage, the dogs stand up in the backseat and start giving us the excited whimper to be released. They jump out of the truck and run and leap and make us laugh until we are holding our sides. And if anyone thinks a dog doesn't smile, then they need to see our dogs' facial expressions as they get to play in unlimited space. Their obvious happiness brings me great joy.

Who are your dogs' best pet-pals?

Heather, my oldest daughter, has two Aussies as well. Once we get her dogs and our dogs together, all five of them are rambunctious and obsessed with each other. Howdy is in heaven because he constantly wants to herd the other dogs. Seeing several Aussies together is amusing. They love to play tug of rope together. They are quite competitive with each other. We all love our dogs and do whatever is necessary to accommodate them in our lives. They are part of our family.

Squirrel, postman, cat...?

Cats are animals that our three dogs would love to "meet." We have a couple of roaming cats in our neighborhood that seem to enjoy prancing back and forth in front of the formal dining room windows. The dogs are usually standing at the windowsill growling and thoroughly irritated by the cats' arrogance and confidence that they are safe from the dogs. However, even if the dogs do enjoy a good chase after a cat, they never go hard enough at it to catch one...and Howdy absolutely could, if he wanted. I think the chase is the part they love. To my dogs, a cat = sporting event and the cat probably wishes it would have never trespassed into our yard. Then again, the cat might be having the most fun out of all of them.

Squeaky-top, ball, stick...?

Liyla, the old gal, is happy to have a rawhide bone tucked beneath her chin. Howdy is happy with any toy and consistently greets us at the front door after he obeys his obsession to find a toy, any dog toy, and bring it to us as a welcoming gift. It is very sweet. Belle loves her little pink pig squeaky toy that Stefie bought for her. She squeaks it with a ferociousness that lets us know she's trying to kill the little toy. A ball is a must have for both Howdy and Belle, both dogs love playing catch. However, Howdy will take the ball and lay on his back while using his paws to throw the ball in the air for himself to catch. I've never seen anything like it.

What is each dog's best quality?

Liyla has this uncanny quality to be the quiet observer. Her big brown eyes seem to absorb everything around her. Her vocabulary understanding is broad, so I can say something to her and she obeys, without fail. This dog is the epitome of gentle obedience. If a dog could be seen as "wise" then I would have to say that Liyla displays a regal sort of character. She is not into silliness. She watches everything going on around her and steps in to intercede whenever she feels her authority is needed. She is an awesome guard dog who does not bark unless it's something truly worth barking at, and she is a dog who automatically wants to walk side by side with us, never going ahead, never falling behind, but always by our side.

Howdy has so many good qualities that it's difficult to pick a "best" one to discuss. I would have to say that he is the dog who wants to do everything we do. He learned to open the exterior doors within a short time, simply by observing our actions. I had no idea that he had picked it up until he let himself in through the backdoor. When I take a nap and wake up, he is at my side with the covers gently in his mouth, pulling them back off of me because he knows that's what I do and he wants to be the one to do it. If he could make dinner with me, I think he'd be stirring the pot. He's very inquisitive, the Curious George of dogs, but not just to be curious, but to watch and learn. I never knew Aussies were so determined to be useful until we owned a few. They never cease to amaze me. They will not only herd your livestock, but they will also nurture them. Most herding dogs want to keep their emotional distance from the herd, but not an Aussie...he is loving, needing to literally press himself against you for a big hug. This dog has truly been my hero, even probably saving me from a terrifying intruder at one time...Howdy made him have second thoughts about fulfilling his plan to get into our house. My little niece can wrap her arms around him, tug on his ears, squeeze his paws and he is happy to oblige her because it means he has loving contact. I guess I would have to summarize his best quality as wanting to be an actual part of the family in affection and in deeds.

Belle the Yorkie has taught me about the intelligence of this breed. These dogs have an awesome quality of having keen senses. Her eyesight is Wonder Woman quality, her ears seem to be bionic...she is fully aware of surroundings that are a block away. She can hear my husband's truck approaching from around the corner, before the other dogs know he's coming. I've learned to be aware of her sensitivity to her surroundings. I think it must often be difficult to be a Yorkie with their heightened senses, they can't turn it off. However, it is great to have a Yorkie; she's the only dog who will truly fit in our lap. She is a high-strung sweetie.

If your dogs could change one thing about you, what would it be?

If my dogs could change anything about me that they'd like, it'd be to let them pee wherever they'd like inside the house, whenever they want and for me to never say a cross word about it. Just pee, pee, pee as they please, in peace as I stand nearby with a smile. No yellow puddles allowed!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, which actors should do their voices?

Belle the Yorkie --- Taylor Swift.
Liyla ---- Meryl Streep.
Howdy the Aussie ---- if we could turn back time, John Wayne, otherwise it would have to be Tim Allen.

Alonna & Bella, Tonka, and Kimbrey

Who is in the photo at right?

That’s me, Alonna, and I currently work in Social Media Marketing while finishing up a Business degree. I’m luckily married to my high school sweetheart and wonderful dog-dad, Luke, who shares the same passion for helping others as I do.

The pretty girl I’m holding in the picture is Bella, who is the baby of the pack. Tonka (black and white) and Kimbrey (brindle) are sniffing around in the back of the picture. Tonka, a pit mix, is currently about 4 years old. Kimbrey, our Heinz 57, is about 2, and Bella, a boxer/pit mix, is about 1 ½.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Lately I’ve been drinking coffee to warm up. The fall chill has finally found Indy, and I’m just not ready for it!

What's brewing?

Recently, my pot has been full of Michigan Cherry flavored Biggby Coffee. The hint of cherry with a splash of vanilla Silk creamer is perfect.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

The only treat is the coffee! The dogs normally manage to steal a few sips when I’m not looking.

How were you and your dogs united?

All of my dogs came from a local humane society or shelter. My first dog, Tonka, came from Indianapolis Animal Care and Control. After 2 years, we felt like he needed a companion and we adopted Kimbrey from the Humane Society of Indianapolis. To round out the group, we adopted Bella from the Humane Society of Indianapolis as well. Sometimes you just know when something is meant to be, and with all three of our dogs, we knew.

How did your dogs get their names? Any nicknames?

Tonka and Kimbrey were named by the shelters they came from. We kept the names because they fit their personalities. Bella, on the other hand, was named Flora at the shelter (and it didn’t suit her at all!). We wanted a simple, sweet name that fit her personality, and Bella just stood out.

Do your dogs have a favorite place to go for walk?

We live next to a great city park that we often go to, but our dogs crave a good hike in the woods.

Squirrel, postman, cat...?

Squirrel! The movie Up definitely got it right…

What is each dog's best quality?

Tonka is a loyal protector.

Kimbrey is determined and always happy.

Bella is an unconditional lover.

If your dogs could change one thing about you, what would it be?

They would definitely want more walks. It can be hard to squeeze in walking 3 dogs (they all walk separately) into already hectic schedules.

What is each dog's proudest moment so far? Most embarrassing?

Tonka (who is very anxious!) was able to overcome his anxiety and safely spend time with a small child.

Kimbrey survived not only being hit by a huge Ford F350, but also overcame hind leg paralysis.

Bella’s proudest moment was the first time she ran on our carpet mill. There was no stopping her once she started sprinting!

Luckily, the dogs have never done anything too embarrassing. We’re a lighthearted bunch and just smile at all of our flaws.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, who should do their voices?

Tonka would definitely sound like James Earl Jones. Rich and deep.

Kimbrey would sound like BeyoncĂ©. She’s a diva.

Bella would probably sound like Ellen Page. Sweet and smart with plenty of understated humor.

If your dogs could each answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

I would simply want to ask them all, “do I make you happy?”

Visit the Oh, Tonka blog.
