A.F. Brady & Maurice

Who is in the photo at right?

I am Alex (A.F. Brady) and I am a psychotherapist and author. My dog is Maurice, a seven-year-old French bulldog and unapologetic lover of the finer things in life.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Maurice and I enjoy a coffee (usually cold as we are distracted by the needs of two very small humans) daily, because I can’t function without coffee and he can’t function without snuggles.

What's brewing?

Usually Nespresso with a lot of milk, or if I’m particularly impatient, NesCafe Instant coffee, also with milk.

Any treats for you or Maurice on this occasion?

I usually eat breakfast well after my first coffee, and Maurice usually hovers under the kids while they’re having breakfast in case they drop anything.

How were you and Maurice united?

Maurice was the runt of a small littler of Frenchies at a place in Jersey. He was needy, tiny, and had parasites, and he wouldn’t let me put him down for even a moment for the first few weeks.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

As he is a saucy Frenchman, I named him after Maurice Chevalier. And I usually call him Momo.

Does Maurice do more to help or hinder your writing?

Maurice has been on my lap or at my feet or under my knees for every book I’ve written and all through the editing process. He is an extremely calming influence, so in that way he helps enormously. However, he wants exclusive access to my lap, which is where my laptop goes, and he snores, so in that way, he is a hinderance.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

If a human of any kind approaches, Momo will lick and snuggle him/her to death. He has absolutely no interest in other animals, no matter the variety.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Usually stuffed toys. He tends to destroy them admirably. He cares very little to whom the toy belongs.

Where is Maurice's favorite outdoor destination?

My lap when my lap is outside.

Who is Maurice's best pet-pal?

He thinks he’s human, and he prefers humans.

What is Maurice's best quality?

His silliness and absolutely unconditional love.

If Maurice could change one thing about New Yorkers, what would it be?

They would all have bacon in their pockets, cashmere blankets at the ready and no pets of their own.

If Maurice could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

Is there anything else that you need?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Maurice could speak, who should voice him?

Maurice Chevalier.

What advice would Maurice give if asked?

“Stop caring what other people think. Only care what I think.”

P. J. Vernon & Chauncey and Mikko

Who is in the photo?

The human is me, PJ Vernon. I’m a suspense author (When You Find Me is my Southern Gothic debut, and everyone should buy twelve copies from NY Times-reporting bookstores). These are my dogs, and they’re pretty grand, too.

In the foreground and half outta frame, we have Chauncey the eight-year-old English Bulldog.

Above him, is our three-year-old rescue, Mikko. Half-Husky, half-German Shepherd, half-Bolto, and half-White Fang. That math adds up; no follow-up questions.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

When it comes to my dog-children, I’m a pageant mom. I’ve forced this publicity upon them in an emotionally-fraught attempt to live vicariously through their impending celebrity.

What's brewing?

I’m no coffee snob [coffee not pictured for safety reasons]. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve got a collection of great beans—and one of those fancy-shmancy hand-crank grinders—but ain’t nothin’ wrong with Maxwell House in the morning. The addition of sweetened condensed milk, however, is an absolute must.

Any treats for you or your dogs on this occasion?

No.

Mikko already indulged in sweet manna from the heavens (magpies dropped orange peels in the backyard this morning while I wasn’t paying attention).

Chauncey’s treat-less because he knows what he did.

How were you and your dogs united?

Chauncey was a poorly-advised-but-totally-worth-it-and-no-one-can-tell-me-otherwise purchase. In grad school, I emptied my entire checking account to bring him home. The bank teller’s face as I withdrew everything to acquire a puppy? Priceless.

Bless her heart.

Mikko’s a rescue. He hails from the far north of Alberta. Brrr. He has a prison [shelter] tat on his left ear, bum hind leg, and a heart o’ pure gold.

He’s also in doggie therapy working on his fear reactivity towards strange dogs (we all have a past). He’s making fabulous progress!

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

Chauncey’s name just came to me. He often goes by Chaunpoo. My partner Barry named Mikko. Mikko also goes by Mikkiepoo.

Do Chauncey and Mikko do more to help or hinder your writing?

A mixed bag. I’m very productive in the mornings when they play the role of white noise machines (soothing snoring punctuated by an occasional fart).

However, once noon rolls around, they engage in mission creep but for dinner. At one point, feeding was 6 PM. They’ve now collapsed the dinnertime window to between 3 and 4. Success!

Have any actual dogs ever inspired dogs in your fiction?

Oh god no. I wouldn’t let them anywhere near my dark and twisty plots.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Baby strollers.

Our house is a downtown, so there’s always a flurry of activity outside. When—and this actually happened—drifters were having sex in our back alley? Not a peep from either of them.

But the menacing clickity-clack of a squeaky stroller wheel on an uneven sidewalk? Not havin’ it.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

All of the above for Chauncey. It’s unlikely Mikko had access to traditional dog toys as a pup, so he’s in the process of learning how to play from his brother. Although, he does have a serious sock fetish we have to watch out for.

Who is each dog's best pet-pal?

Chauncey is not self-aware when it comes to his status as “pet”, so he’d likely say Mikko. His dog.

Circling back to Mikko’s fear reactivity, he’s made great furry friends in therapy (huge shout out to Dogma in Calgary). But at the end of the day, he loves Chauncey the most. He’s protective of his sibling.

What is each dog's best quality?

Chauncey spent his formative years with me as a single gay man, so his special power is the neediness I deliberately and carefully cultivated in him.

Mikko’s best quality is his ability to play the big spoon to my little spoon on the couch.

If Chauncey and Mikko could change one thing about you, what would it be?

They’d like to see the final remnants of my sand castle-like resolve wash away when it comes to staving off dinner until [currently] 3:30 PM.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

How much more do you love me than Barry? If the answer’s not what I want to hear, I forfeit my question.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, who should voice them?

Mikko could be voiced by Michael J. Fox who played Chance in Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.

Chauncey could be done by Sally Field a la Sassy.

Neither has the gravitas for Shadow (played by the late Don Ameche).

What advice would your dogs give if asked?

Strollers belong in zoo enclosures where they can be appreciated from a safe distance. Not just… feral… in urban centers.

Janna King & Melvin and Olive

Who is in the photos in this entry?

I’m Janna King and I’m an author, screenwriter and playwright who, on rare occasions, directs. I’m with my dogs, Melvin, a 4-year-old Husky/Staffordshire Terrier/Shepherd mix and Olive, an 8-year-old English/American Bulldog mix.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

They are my writing partners. In our photos together, I’m chatting with them at home where I work. We’re discussing my debut novel, The Seasonaires, and I’m letting them in on some upcoming projects. Mel is never impressed. Olive has no idea what I’m saying, but she’s a good listener.

What's brewing?

I’m indulging my two-a-day almond milk latte habit, brewed and frothed by my beloved Nespresso machine in mugs made with my kids (now 19 and 21) at Color Me Mine. I plunk in two heaping teaspoons of sugar. I affectionately blame my coffee sweet tooth on my Grandma Honey who used to make me “coffee milk” when I was a kid: a teeny bit of coffee, the rest milk and a whole lot of sugar.

Any treats for you or Mel and Olive on this occasion?

Mel is also not impressed by treats, but he does like carrots. Olive’s mouth doesn’t allow her to chew carrots. She covets Greenies, but they don’t really help with her pungent dog breath.

How were you and your dogs united?

My daughter volunteered at a Los Angeles pet rescue and she fell in love with siblings Olive and Sully. The rescue didn’t want them separated, so my ex-husband adopted Sully and I took Olive. That way my kids could be with both dogs. I dogsit Sully on occasion so brother and sister can hang out together.

I was looking for another rescue pup and leaning towards German Shepherds because I had one I adored, Teddy. When we saw Mel, we thought he would grow to be Shepherd size, but he stopped about halfway there. He’s a handsome fella in his own right and knows it.

How did your dogs get their names? Any aliases?

I can’t remember their original names when we adopted them. The kids are in charge of naming pets and tend towards very human names for pups. We call Melvin “Mel,” unless he’s in trouble, and then I use his full name. My daughter also calls him “Mooey," so we’ve all taken to that.

Olive is “Lady” because she’s such a pretty lady!

Do Mel and Olive do more to help or hinder your writing?

Writing can be very solitary, so they keep me company. They are usually pretty chill unless the doorbell rings or dogs pass by the house or the mail carrier comes or Amazon delivery or... Mel gets very antsy when I’m on the phone, but that’s probably because I’m antsy when I’m on the phone.

They distract me sometimes because I love to take their photos, often for their Instagram account 2bulliesandaroo, which they have with Olive’s brother Sully. The “roo” refers to Mel, who we think looks like a kangaroo and can jump about as high. When Mel made the Boop My Nose Instagram feed, I was more excited about that than pretty much any accomplishment.

Have any actual dogs ever inspired dogs in your fiction?

I have a bulldog in the book I’m currently writing. But I imagine this one being more like my first bulldog (over two decades ago), Stella, who was so fat that she looked like a plump seal lolling on the beach. This novel takes place in Malibu, so that seemed appropriate.

Cat, postman, squirrel…?

Mel goes after the squirrels and crows. Olive barks at anything that moves.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick…?

Mel is pretty good at catch. We take him to the park and he’s fast, but in short bursts. Then he plops down in the dirt and lets the other dogs take over.

Olive likes rope toys. The two play tug-of-war, which is an entertaining distraction.

Who is each dog's best pet-pal?

They love each other. Sometimes they bicker over food we accidentally drop during dinner. I’m not crazy about that. They also get along great with Sully, who is The Man!

What is each dog's best quality?

Mel is the sweetest dog ever! He just wants everyone to love him. But he also has some ‘tude and often looks at us like he thinks we’re dolts.

Olive is just plain goofy. She is the best "Saturday morning snuggies" for my daughter Izzy, when Izzy visits.

If Mel and Olive could change one thing about Angelenos, what would it be?

Mel would like Angelenos to stop looking at their cellphones on our hikes and say “hello” to him instead.

And Olive feels like drivers should chill out with the road rage.

If your dogs could answer only one question in English, what would you ask them?

I would ask Mel, “What’s the secret to life?” because he’s so confident and content.

To Olive I would ask, "What are you thinking about right now?” because I always want to know that when I’m looking at her face.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which your dogs could speak, who should voice them?

Christian Slater = Mel
Aubrey Plaza = Olive

What advice would your dogs give if asked?

Mel would say, “You be you."

Olive would tell me that I need to take naps and drink more water.

A. J. Mayers & Dexter

A.J. and Dexter in the Mirage elevator
Who is in the photo at right?

I'm A. J. Mayers, a film studio marketer by day, and an author/novelist by night - but also day too! My dog is Dexter Whiskers Mayers, but we can call him Dexter or Dex. He's a 5 year old French Bulldog, male.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

We went to Vegas for a Thanksgiving family trip. Dexter got to see his human grandparents and uncles.

What's brewing?

Dexter got to run around the casino - he's not old enough to gamble, but he enjoyed the people watching.

Any treats for you or Dexter on this occasion?

His minty bones so we can keep his breath fresh and clean.

How were you and Dexter united?

I found a breeder in Orange County and emailed him - he agreed to meet me with Dexter and his brother Bruce. I ended up picking Dexter because he had a cute white mark on his forehead that set him apart.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

I was going to name him Tex as I'm from Texas, but then I saw the season 1 DVD of the show Dexter on my desk and thought..Dex...Dexter! I sometimes call him "my little creature."

Does Dexter do more to help or hinder your writing?

He keeps me calm and happy. A nice break from writing to pet and play with him is always welcomed.

Has Dexter inspired the creation of any fictional dogs?

Yes! In my latest novel, Final Boarding, there is a man named Dexter which of course was inspired by my dog's name!

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Squirrel.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Squeaky-toy.

Who is Dexter's best pet-pal?

A pug named Lola.

What is Dexter's best quality?

His temperament.

If Dexter could change one thing about Angelenos, what would it be?

Having the ones that own corporations allow your dog to go to work with your human if that isn't a perk already!

If Dexter could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

What do I do to make you most happiest?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Dexter could speak, who should voice him?

Steve Carrell! He's great with accents and funny voices.

What advice would Dexter give if asked?

Whenever I leave for work, don't worry, you're on my mind and there's no need to be sad. I have to work to support you!

Visit A .J. Mayers's website and, and follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Check out Dexter on Instagram.

Tara & Henry

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Tara, and this is my boy Henry. By day I have a city job that I love, and after regular work hours I am a crochet addict! As a relatively new crochet fiend, I have recently started up a blog where I will be featuring my crochet items and adventures for my new found hobby love! You can come along on the journey at the Killer Queen Knits website or @killerqueenknits on Instagram.

My crochet partner in crime is my boy Henry. Henry is a 9-year-old English Bulldog who is the most delightful boy ever, and the best decision my hubby and I ever made.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

No real special occasion for this date with Henry. I just decided to take a few summer days off to hang out with my fave, and to catch up on some crochet WIPs & chill.

What's brewing?

Since I am from Beautiful British Columbia, Canada, I naturally have some Tim Horton’s coffee a brewin’. I’m pretty sure it’s the law in Canada.

Any treats for you or Henry on this occasion?

Henry is a lucky fella and has himself a single Timbit…. That’s a doughnut hole for the layman.

How were you and Henry united?

Henry has been with us since he was 9 weeks old. He’s still my big baby.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

The husband's favourite movie of all time is Goodfellas. I’m pretty sure I have seen it 100,000 times, and since Ray Liotta is the bomb, Henry is named after his character, Henry Hill. But Henry will also respond to: Pooper, Poopy Pants and Bubs.

Does Henry do more to help or hinder your knitting?

Henry can always be found by my side when I am crocheting up a storm. In fact, he is always by my side when I get home, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Henry is a big barker when anyone or anything comes near the house, but he’s all talk. He just wants to meet everybody, then he’s fine. Except for other dogs/animals/crawling babies on TV. He’s a nutball when any of these things are on. Such a weirdo.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

He has a terrible habit of mutilating anything stuffed, so he sticks with his Kong. It holds treats after all, and Henry is about that life.

Who is Henry's best pet-pal?

Henry’s best pal is a whippet named Sam. They are in love.

What is Henry's best quality?

Henry’s best quality has to be how snuggly he is. On his own terms of course. But when he’s in the mood, it is the absolute best when he sits right on top of you like (A) it’s comfortable, and (B) he’s a small dog. Which he is not. Henry also is probably the most friendly boy ever. He loves everybody, and everybody loves Henry.

Where is Henry's favorite outdoor destination?

Henry loves sitting on the patio and just staring into space. He’s real big on contemplating life. Otherwise, he does enjoy the dog beach when we can get there.

If Henry could change one thing about you, what would it be?

I think Henry would really like it if I would fix him a plate of whatever it is that I am having. This would make his life.

If Henry could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

I think I would just like to know if I am doing everything for him to make him the happiest he could possibly be. I love my boy. Wouldn’t it be great if they could tell you how they feel too?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Henry could speak, who should voice him?

He would totally have a British accent. He probably sounds like Benedict Cumberbatch. Just sayin.

Brenda Addison & Porkchop

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Brenda! I design unique one of a kind art jewelry, and this cutie is my Old English Bulldoggie, Porkchop. He is 6 years old.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

With us, every day is a good occasion to go get our favorite coffee. We love going to McDonald’s. They make awesome iced coffees. And they always have a treat for Pork.

What's brewing?

This is a hard question. If I brew coffee at home I make Maxwell House. As I said above, I love McDonald’s Sugar Free vanilla iced coffee.

Any treats for you or Porkchop on this occasion?

Pork loves their plain cheeseburgers, and the Ice water is awesome. Porkchop tries to put his whole face in the cup.

How were you and Porkchop united?

My first Bulldog “Artie,” who was rescued from a shelter, passed away. A lady that I designed a website for just got two girl bulldog puppies and she told me that the lady that had them was keeping the male for breeding purposes. She has three boys and just had a baby. She decided it was too much to have three children and take care of a puppy. Seeing that, face my husband thought Porkchop would help with my grieving.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

Porkchop had that name when we got him and it fits him. Aliases. Porkie, Pork, chopper, Boo...

Does Porkchop do more to help or hinder your creative work?

Well, depends on how you look at it; the snoozing can hinder you if you let it.

Cat, postman, squirrel?

Porkchop love everyone and every thing. When we go to the vet he thinks it's a meet and greet and they’re all there to love on him.

It would take too much energy to chase it, so, no--I will just watch it.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick?

Loves his squeaky toy, loves to play fetch, and to have a bone to chew on.

Who is Porkchop's best pet-pal?

Trixie is Porkie's best friend.

Trixie is my other bulldoggie. She is 5 years old and a Princess. She walks like she has high heels on.

Trixie and Porkchop are one year and a month apart in age.

[photo right: the day Trixie joined the household]

What is Porkchop's best quality?

Loving everyone; he thinks people are great.

If Porkchop could change one thing about Ohioans, what would it be?

Have more treats at the drive-thru windows.

If Porkchop could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

What’re you thinking about when you stare out in space?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Porkchop could speak, who should voice him?

Jason Statham -- love that voice.

What advice would Porkchop give if asked?

You can do it. So go for it -- I’m here with you all the way.

Noni Brueckner & Sally

Who is in the photo at right?

This is me, Noni Brueckner, and my dog Sally. I'm a wedding and family photographer in Charleston, SC and Sally is a 5 year old, 40lb mutt. We did a gene test on her and she's mostly Staffie Pit Bull but also hound, pointer and bulldog. We think she may have some Ridgeback as well.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Sally loves people so I like to bring her to my favorite coffee shop, Muddy Waters. It's a treat for both of us.

What's brewing?

Muddy Water's large latte with 2%. Yum.

Any goodies to go with the coffee?

Sometimes a muffin.

Any treat for Sally on this occasion?

Just lots of people to wag her little stubby tail at and lick.

How were you and Sally united?

My husband, Eric, adopted Sally from a shelter after she was found stray at 5 months old in Los Angeles (where we used to live). She was living off pizza crusts and chicken bones (she still loves pizza crust)! He was in school at the time and I was worried that he wouldn't have time for a dog... but it was totally the best decision ever.

[photo left: Sally and Eric, shortly after he adopted her]

You've got some beautiful wedding photos on your website. Which are more challenging to photograph: dogs or brides?

Haha! I'd say dogs. And thank you!

How did Sally get her name? Does she have any nicknames?

My husband named her when he saw her - thought she looked like a Sally. We call her about a million things including Sal, Sallymander, Salsal, Princess, Sea Captain, The Captain and all kinds of nonsense.

Squirrel, cat, postman...?

Squirrel and cat! Also opossum, raccoon and skunk.

Tennis ball, Frisbee, squeaky-toy...?

Stick!!!

Where is Sally's favorite place for an outing?

Probably the mountains in California where we used to live. We'd take her on long hikes all the time. A close second would be Folly Beach here in Charleston where we bring the ball slinger and she plays beach fetch.

Who is Sally's best pet-pal?

Probably Zoey, our best friend's great dane mix. We all used to live together and hike a lot. Unfortunately, we just found out yesterday that Zoey has bone cancer which is so very sad.

What is Sally's most endearing quality?

Her excitement towards people. She will squirm and wiggle her butt so hard to greet you and then wants to lick and cuddle. She even does this to strangers! She also is very floppy and relaxed and will lie comfortably in anyone's lap and all kinds of contorted positions.

If Sally could change one thing about you, what would it be?

She would have me take her on even more and longer walks -- oh and probably never use a leash.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Sally could speak, which actor should do her voice?

Wow, I have no idea. Maybe Shailene Woodley.

If Sally could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

Probably if there is anything she needs! (I really love my dog!)

Visit the Noni Elizabeth Photography website and blog.

Camille Griep & Dutchess Marie Siefker-Griep

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Camille Griep, and I’m an author and editor, living just north of Seattle. Pictured with me, is my girl Dutchess Marie Siefker-Griep, a 4-year-old Olde English Bulldogge. (They’re a bit different from standard English Bulldogs.)

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

As is standard for our morning routine, I take a couple hours (and a couple cups of coffee) to catch up with the news, literary and otherwise, so I can attempt to write without the distractions of social media and the 24-hour news cycle. Dutch has her own miniature office in the form of a fluffy grey bed underneath my desk. She’s here to ensure I stay on task.

What's brewing?

I’m not as much of a coffee snob as many of my fellow Pacific Northwesters, but I’m drinking the quite wonderful Bistro Blend by Café Vita, run through our Braun espresso maker on the 2XL cups of coffee setting. (The regular-sized cups of coffee must be for hobbits or something.) I add heavy cream to the first cup of the day and drink the remaining cups black. (Did I mention I’m a Gemini?)

Any treats for you or Dutch on this occasion?

Summer has brought some amazing strawberries and blueberries to the store, so I’ve thrown some in a bowl of yogurt.

Meanwhile, Dutchess is also having a seasonal snack: peanut butter and bacon doggie ice cream from The Bear and the Rat. This summer has been abnormally hot for us, and so I try to start her day with something cool. In the afternoons we work from the basement.

How were you and Dutch united?

My grandmother, who still lives in my hometown of Montana, had wanted a puppy and the one she picked out was very ill, so the breeders offered her one of their adults who hadn’t been successful as breeding dogs. However, my grandmother’s boxer, who is very much a one-person sort of dog , didn’t appreciate the arrival of another adult female and she and Dutch fought terribly, requiring stitches for them both more than once.

Last summer, while helping my grandmother move to a smaller house, complicating the situation for the dogs, I offered to take Dutchess home with me instead. She’s been here for a year now and is doing a great job adapting.

How did your dog get her name? Any aliases?

When my grandmother received the dog her name was Nova. Coincidentally, her boxer nemesis was also Nova, My grandmother settled on Jade, but my uncle kept referring to her as Dutch Chocolate aka Dutchie because of her rich brown coat. For whatever reason, I like two syllable dog names, so it was natural to stretch it into Dutchess. Her nicknames are Dutch, Button, and Muffin, for no particular reason.

Does Dutch do more to help or hinder your writing?

Most of the time she is very quiet company. But there are rare days when she’s an insatiable snacker (mooch) and we have to do a good bit of negotiating before I can really settle in and get work done.

Have any actual dogs inspired fictional dogs in your fiction?

In my satirical, epistolary fairy tale, Letters to Zell, Rory (Sleeping Beauty) adopts an English Bulldog named Snoozer. Snoozer is modeled directly from my late friend Wynnie. She was a traditional English Bulldog, whose talents were sleeping and stealing sandwiches from improbable heights.

I also wrote a short story called “Robodog” in which the Wild Dog in the story was modeled after my mother’s mixed breed sweetheart, Festus.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Dutch will chase cats, raccoons, and, apparently, the terrier who sneaks into our yard from next door. She doesn’t take much notice of squirrels, but she loves the Chinese food delivery driver. The feeling seems to be mutual: occasionally we’ll find things accidentally tucked into our order for her.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Though Dutchess does not deign to play catch or fetch, she does love squeaky toys. She had one caterpillar with six or seven squeakers in it, and she was in heaven. Her other favorite activity is bouncing on the guest bed. (Don’t tell the guests.)

Who is Dutch's best pet-pal?

We haven’t had a whole lot of pet dates, but I’d say it’s probably her writing retreat friend, Buddy. He’s a Boston Terrier who belongs to another local writer, G.G. Silverman.

What is Dutch's best quality?

Even though she’s a super low maintenance dog, I think my favorite thing about her is how much she loves the humans in our house equally. Growing up in a household of one person dogs, I was afraid she wouldn’t bond with Adam since she spends the days with me. That hasn’t turned out to be true. She loves us differently, yet equally, and I’m thankful she and Adam have grown so close, as she’s his very first dog.

If Dutch could change one thing about Washingtonians, what would it be?

She would take away their insatiable appetite for the fireworks that remain maddeningly legal in our little unincorporated enclave.

If Dutch could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

Are you happy?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Dutch could speak, who should voice her?

Perhaps Kat Dennings, Eva Amurri, or even Zooey Deschanel – ladies with a bit of snark and edge, yet still able to be languorous and playful.

What advice would Dutch give if asked?

Sniff everything with one nostril then the other, just in case the first one leads you astray.
Always eschew presents for the box they come in.
When possible, hold out for a hamburger.

Visit Camille Griep's website.

Michael Harwood & Reggie

Who is in the photo at right?

The good-looking one on the right is Reggie who is a four year old French Bulldog.

The other one is me – Michael Harwood, author of The Manservant (age unknown).

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Reggie and I stop for coffee every morning at our local coffee shop – Small Batch Coffee Company. We live by the sea in Brighton on the south coast of England so our morning coffee ritual is really rather picturesque. We are both creatures of habit so Reggie is sat by the door waiting for me by 9.30 every morning. He’s quite a clock-watcher!

The other thing is that I can’t even think about writing without a strong coffee inside me. It’s also an excuse for Reggie to have a run around on the beach.

What's brewing?

Always a skinny ‘flat white’ for me. If I’ve been up late the night before writing I might stretch to two. Reggie has a bowl of water. The staff know us so well that Reggie has his very own bowl that they keep especially for him.

Any treats for you or Reggie on this occasion?

I’ll pass on the chocolate croissants if I can but Reggie can’t resist a biscuit. To be honest he would have a croissant too but I drawn the line at that.

How were you and Reggie united?

I rescued Reggie when he was 4 months old from a tiny one-bedroom apartment on the 11th floor of a tower block in a run down part of London. He wasn’t mistreated but it was no place for a dog to be living. The minute I saw him I knew I wasn’t going home without him and he hasn’t left my side since.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

We named him after Reggie Kray one half of the Kray twins, the notorious London gangsters of the 1960’s. We thought we might get another Frenchie and call him Ronnie after the other twin – We might still do it.

Does Reggie do more to help or hinder your writing?

If he’s curled up at my feet as I write I find his company quite soothing but if somebody comes to the door he barks his head off which is not quite so soothing. The writing day can sometimes descend into chaos in which case I throw in the towel and take him to the beach.

Has Reggie inspired the creation of any fictional dogs?

Not yet but I’m planning out a mystery series which is crying out for a canine character so I’d be amazed if it doesn’t turn out to be a French Bulldog.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Postman, every time!

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Reggie will take all of the above. Preferably together.

Who is Reggie's best pet-pal?

Another Frenchie called Lady Podge – they are going steady.

What is Reggie's best quality?

He is just so affectionate and funny

If Reggie could change one thing about Sussaxons, what would it be?

Not much I don’t think. People in Sussex are amongst the most dog friendly in the UK.

That said I think he would like to visit our local French restaurant who sadly frown on dogs in the restaurant itself – even French dogs.

If Reggie could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

Why do you hate the postman so much?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Reggie could speak, who should voice him?

Gerard Depardieu.

What advice would Reggie give if asked?

Chase the postman.

Laura Thomas & Ginger Lily

Who is in the photo at right?

I am Laura Thomas-— wife, mother of 3 teens-and-twenties kids, and published author of various genres (feel free to check out my website). I am also the owner of this gorgeous canine… Ginger Lily, the 4-year old female English bulldog! We live in the beautiful city of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

We love to walk down to the lake, and this beautiful spring afternoon was way too perfect to stay indoors. Lily, who is the quintessential couch potato, always perks up when I grab her leash, and she seems to undergo some sort of miraculous transformation into an energetic greyhound puppy. Until she gets back home to her couch…

What's brewing?

Starbucks non-fat caramel macchiato always hits the spot for me.

Any treats for you or Ginger Lily on this occasion?

I was uncharacteristically restrained from consuming anything chocolate today (I usually go for the Starbucks chocolate caramel pretzel stick), but Lily had a little piece of her beloved cheese when she arrived home.

How were you and Ginger Lily united?

After our previous pooch of 14 years passed away, I said we were not having another dog. Ever. Yeah, that lasted about 6 months, and then I began talking to myself and developed a bizarre fascination with English bulldogs. Possibly because I’m English, but mostly because they are such great companions. My family loved the breed too, so we did lots of homework and finally located a superb breeder in the Vancouver area, and then waited for the litter to be born. We all fell in love with Ginger Lily at first sight, and the rest is history. She is such a humorous, adorable, slobbery bundle of shedding fur— there is never a dull moment with Lily around!

How did your dog get her name? Any aliases?

We named her after a restaurant at a resort in Jamaica. Doesn’t everyone do that? Actually we were on vacation and had put a deposit down with the breeder, so were officially “pregnant” with an English bulldog. We ate at this restaurant one night, and I looked up at the sign and declared that if our puppy happened to be a girl, we would name her “Ginger Lily”. She became Lily for short, but also answers to Frilly, Fluffy, Stinky, and Bacon. Okay, she’s an attention seeker and answers to pretty much anything!

Does Ginger Lily do more to help or hinder your writing?

I would have to say Lily helps rather than hinders my writing. She’s a pretty low maintenance/ exceedingly lazy doggie, and I find her heavy breathing/ old-man-snoring quite therapeutic while I work. On the rare occasion when she does in fact move from the couch, it’s a healthy reminder for me to take a quick break from the computer screen while I attend to her majesty’s needs!

Have any actual dogs inspired fictional dogs in your published work?

Oh yes. An English bulldog appears in my middle grade novel The Candle Maker, which is scheduled for publication later this year with Dancing With Bear Publishing. English bulldogs are such humorous, fascinating animals and they simply ooze character…I took much inspiration from Lily. A series of bulldog stories for young children is definitely on my “to do” list.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Postman— or any other poor soul who happens to come anywhere near our house. She has a ferocious bark, but she would only ever lick someone to death. And maybe ask nicely for a tummy tickle.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

We banned squeaky toys early on for the sake of our sanity. Ball or anything she can chew vigorously… have you seen the under bite?

Who is Ginger Lily's best pet-pal?

Sadly, her best pet-pal Romeo the guinea pig recently died, so now her only fellow pets are the fish. Not quite as exciting really. But to be honest, she prefers humans.

What is Ginger Lily's best quality?

She is so, so loving. You seriously can’t help feeling loved with this one around… although she is not terribly good with ‘personal space’. All she asks in return is to be fed!

If Ginger Lily could change one thing about British Columbians, what would it be?

Lily would respectfully request that B.C. residents not presume she is a boy dog, just because she is lacking in the daintiness department. Yes, she is a little husky and has quarterback shoulders, but don’t the pink collar, pink striped harness, and pink sweater scream that she is a girl? “What’s his name?” Really, people?

If Ginger Lily could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

Do you actually watch the TV, or are you just gapping out and sleeping with your eyes open?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Ginger Lily could speak, who should voice her?

Morgan Freeman. Definitely.

What advice would Ginger Lily give if asked?

Slow down the pace of life and smell the roses. Or eat them. Or just eat anything.

Tony Schwartz & Chesney

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Tony Schwartz and I do really cool things for really cool people. I'm a professional DJ, the owner of an A/V rental company, Puget Sound Pro Audio Rental, and a photo booth company, The Puget Sound Photo Booth Co. We do amazing things in the events and entertainment industry - I'm blessed to call having fun a career.

My dog is Chesney, who is an English bulldog (mainly. He is mixed with another breed, but we aren't sure what). He is a five year old male. He is pretty much awesome, too.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

We stopped for coffee on our daily walk around town. It's a warm day, so Chesney wanted some water and a nap in the shade. I just wanted an iced beverage and unfortunately, this isn't called Cold Beer with a Canine.

What's brewing?

I am drinking an iced mocha, no whip.

Any treats for you or Chesney on this occasion?

No treats. Chesney is a picky eater. He's weird like that.

How were you and Chesney united?

I adopted Chesney from Cascade Bulldog Rescue when he was 10 months old. The first day, he arrived at my house in a diaper and sat in the corner, shaking (poor boy!). By the third day, he had destroyed most of my things (in some areas, the baseboard still hasn't been replaced). Despite replacing the carpet and going through numerous toys, blankets, pillows, as well as a couch, among other things, he has come a long ways and he's doing much better. He's a good dog with simple needs.

How did your dog get his name? Any aliases?

His original name was Spike. He's not really a Spike despite the fact they put one of those spike collars on him. So, I named him Chesney after my favorite country artist, Kenny Chesney.

You're a professional DJ. Does Chesney ever accompany you on gigs?

No, he usually has to stay behind. It's not a bad life though - he gets to watch sports: he likes football and baseball despite it having complex rules, but NASCAR makes sense to him: go fast, turn left.

Of course, my dad will often come over to visit him while I'm gone, and sometimes take him back to his place. Chesney gets to run around a big field, and play with my mom.

I do want to train Chesney as a professional ring bearer. I think it would be a great add-on to my Wedding DJ services. Until then, Chesney often comes to the office each day and greets everyone as they enter by sniffing their feet.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

Chesney is not a fan of Barack Obama nor Hillary Clinton.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Chesney is spoiled with toys: bones, balls, etc. But his favorite is a red Kong Wubba that I will have to toss and he will fetch. He'll grab it, play tug of war with it, swing it around wildly, etc. He can easily do that game for 30 minutes. It's also why there are holes and dents in my walls.

Who is Chesney's best pet-pal?

We used to go to the dog park, but Chesney would try to tackle all the dogs like Kam Chancellor. It was pretty funny, but other dog owners didn't like the fact there dog wasn't an athletic stud like mine. So now, the only dog Chesney hangs out with is my mom's chilula, Maui. And by hang out, I mean co-exist and tolerate each other. They are really good at co-conspiring for treats together, though.

Where is Chesney's favorite outdoor destination?

Anywhere outside with people. He loves it. I really want to take him to a "Bark in the Park" night at a professional baseball game. I think we would enjoy it immensely.

What is Chesney's best quality?

He is patient. In the summer, I'm gone a large percentage of the weekend, and he patiently waits for me to return. This commercial pretty much sums it up (sans the drinking and driving part, which no one should ever do).

Oh, and then when I do come home and he sees me in the window, his worst quality emerges - he goes 0 to 100 real quick and won't stop barking and running and jumping. And then he goes to his food bowl and throws his food around via his mouth like its confetti. My house is never clean for longer than ten minutes, tops.

If Chesney could change one thing about Seattleites, what would it be?

Well, we live in Puyallup, and Chesney has only been to Seattle once (he didn't like it - too much traffic). So, rephrasing the question a bit, if Chesney could change one thing about Puyallup, he would have more restaurants with outdoor seating available so more dogs and their bipeds could have lunch outside together.

If Chesney could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

"When you sleep, what do you dream about?"

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Chesney could speak, who should voice him?

Whoever was the voice of Eeyore from Winnie-the-Pooh. That would be absolutely perfect. Matthew McConaughey would be a close second.

What advice would Chesney give if asked?

"If you are a single woman, you should date my daddy."

Lisa Russo & Lulu

Who is in the photo at right?

That's me and my shadow, having a morning snuggle and kiss. I'm Lisa Russo, a fine art photographer. You can find me at Lisa Russo Fine Art Photography.

My furry friend is Lulu, our little girl bulldog who turned 6 this summer.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Just saying goodbye before I head off to the gym before returning home for my workday.

What's brewing?

I'm so boring: Just regular old coffee with splenda and cream! I love my Keurig!

Any treats for you or Lulu on this occasion?

Lulu just finished her morning rawhide chewy, which gets her more excited than just about anything!

How did Lulu get her name? Any nicknames?

My kids (Aidan & Ava) picked it, but good gravy do we have nicknames! Lulubean, beaner, beanie, beanie bear...the list goes on and on!

How were you and Lulu united?

We were in search of our 2nd bulldog, after our first (Sadie) passed at the grand old age (for a bulldog!) of 11. The breeder was showing us puppies when out ran this defective, rumbly piebald 5 month old she planned to add to her breeding kennel. We decided to take her and give her a life of spoiled luxury instead. Best decision ever.

Who is Lulu's best pet-pal?

My neighbor's giant schnauzer Iba and my other neighbor's lab Joba. I think Lulu is a little in love with Joba...he sweetly tolerates her.

Where is Lulu's favorite outdoor destination?

My car for afternoon school carpool! She stalks me from noon on, and as soon as I put her in the car she lies down and falls asleep. Too much energy expended during that whole 'stalking' time.

Squeaky toy, ball, stick...?

You name it! But only for about 5 minutes before it's naptime again.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

None of the above. She chooses to watch life go by from a comfortable lying-down position. Chasing requires way too much energy!

What is Lulu's best quality?

Everything! She doesn't bark, jump, bite, growl or wander. Friendliest dog ever. If I had to name one, it would be how lovely she is with children.

If Lulu could change one thing about Texans, what would it be?

The rude drivers. It wakes her up when I yell at them inside the car.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Lulu could speak, which actor should do her voice?

Brenda Vaccaro!

If Lulu could answer only one question in English, what would you ask her?

Does anything hurt?

If I may, lest anyone read this and be encouraged to take on a bulldog, I wrote an informational blog post awhile back addressing the topic, as bulldogs are wonderful, but very (very) difficult to own. I fear many people get them thinking they're cute and full of character, but aren't quite prepared for the maintenance and expense. Wonderful dogs, but research is key. Debra Lockhart & Ray-Ray

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Debra Lockhart and I am a mother, grandmother, volunteer, a manager in a large bank, and a Pit Bull advocate. I am pictured here with my Ray-Ray who just turned 1 in December, but this picture was taken when he was much smaller. Ray is, according to his DNA test, an American Bulldog, Boxer, unidentified mix breed dog but according to his block head, he is a Pit Bull. I write a blog about Ray's escapades at Peaceabull Assembly, which refers to him and his kitty siblings co-existing here.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Ray and I get up early every morning to spend some bonding time before we start the day. On weekdays that can be anywhere between 4:30 and 5:30 am. Snuggles from Ray and a big pot of coffee are just the ticket to start the day right.

What's brewing?

It has to be Starbucks French Roast, whole bean and I grind them at home fresh every day and drink it black, no sugar.

Any treats for you or Ray on this occasion?

While my coffee is brewing, Ray and his kitty siblings line up for their morning treats of Duck flavored Carnivore Crunch.

How did you and Ray first meet?

I got a call from a friend of a friend who knew I was involved in rescue and also that I had a fondness for the bully breeds. She wanted to rehome her pregnant female, Sparkles, and her male dog, Kane, both of whom were living on a chain outside. As the Rescue was looking for placement, I got another call from the woman that the female was giving birth and that the puppies were dying. It was December 1st and 32 degrees outside. I left work to pick up her dogs and we got them into rescue where Ray and his sister were born.

How did Ray get his name? Any aliases?

I had been getting the urge to have a dog for quite a while but my husband wasn't sold on the idea yet. When we actually decided to adopt one of the "Sparkle pups" I suggested we name him Ray, after my husband's favorite football player, Ray Lewis. He also goes by Ray-Ray, Baby, Fat Head and Pup-Pup-a-roni.

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Yes, yes, and yes. Ray loves all of the above and will play endlessly with them all.

Cat, mailman, squirrel...?

Ray loves his cats and would like nothing more than to play with them but unfortunately they don't share the sentiment. As for mailman and squirrel, Ray has really had no exposure to either.

Does Ray have a favorite place to go for outings?

Ray knows what it means to "go shopping." We visit our local Tractor Supply for some socialization and bully sticks nearly every week. We also visit several stores in the nearby city as often as we can.

Who are Ray's best pet-pal?

That would be our kitty, Jae, who often sits near Ray. The other two keep a pretty good distance.

What is Ray's best quality?

He is very smart and learns quickly, but I'd say the very best quality is his cuddliness. I love snuggling with Ray on the sofa and watching TV. He is an excellent cuddler.

If Ray could change one thing about your cats, what would it be?

He would want them to be more playful. He loves playing with kitty toys and I know he would love to play with the cats too.

If Ray could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

"Why are you obsessed with eating wood?"

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Ray could speak, who should voice him?

We'd have to step into the wayback machine, but I imagine Ray's voice to be like the little boy(s) who played Dominick in Kindergarten Cop.

Juliana Willems & Otis

Who is in the photo at right?

My name is Juliana Willems. I work marketing and events at my local humane society, I foster mostly "pit bull" dogs and I document it all in my blog Peace, Love & Fostering. The dog with me in the photo is one of my former foster dogs Otis, a two year old mutt (American bull dog? boxer? pointer? pit bull dog?), who is currently staying with me while his forever dad is out of town.

What's the occasion for Coffee with a Canine?

Otis is a big baby and since he doesn't like doing anything without me I bring him along even for my morning coffee.

What's brewing?

Anything from Starbucks. Probably something seasonal - so right now a skim, no whip gingerbread latte.

Otis doesn't need coffee because he becomes instantly caffeinated whenever I return from being gone for more than 30 seconds.

Any treats for you or Otis on this occasion?

I try not to feed him in public so that his drool doesn't take over his entire being.

How did you and Otis first meet?

He was adopted by a friend of mine and it wasn't working out. I offered to dog-sit him when they went away for a weekend and, as you can probably guess, he never went back. I fostered him two separate times (one other adoption didn't work out, poor pup) until he found his perfect forever home. It was worth the wait, because he and his dad are the most perfect pair.

Would you share a bit of insight about your work with foster dogs?

In the past year I've had a handful of both long term and temporary fosters, including dogs from the rescue group I work with, Jasmine's House. Because I work at the county shelter I see how valuable fostering is to open up cage space for the homeless animals that pour in through our doors every day. My foster dogs have all picked me for one reason or another, and even though they've all been adopted, a part of each of them will stay with me forever.

How did Otis get his name? Any nicknames?

Otis came with his name. I absolutely hated it at first, but now I think it totally fits him. His full name when he was looking for a home was Honey Bunches of Otis, and some current nicknames include Oats, Otie, Otie-potie, and dumbo.

Cat, postman, squirrel...?

None of the above. To quote Otie's owner: "Otis almost chased a squirrel today. When it ran in front of him he walked a little faster for a few strides."

Ball, squeaky-toy, stick...?

Again, none of the above. Your best bet is to take any of those things and cover them with peanut butter before presenting it to him.

Does Otis have a favorite place to go for walk?

Anywhere his human goes - otherwise, he prefers the couch.

Who is Otis's best pet-pal?

He shares a yard with a really cute female mutt-something. They flirt all the time, but they're still in the awkward "I'm pretending I don't really like you" phase. He also has a great BFF relationship with a cocker spaniel who is about 1/3 his size.

What is Otis's best quality?

He makes you feel like you're the coolest person in the world!

And he doesn't destroy the house when I leave (a quality you learn to seriously appreciate when you're continuously getting foster dogs who aren't used to living in a home).

If Otis could change one thing about you, what would it be?

He would probably try to make it so that I never went anywhere without him.

If Otis could answer only one question in English, what would you ask him?

Do you really think whining makes things all better?

If Hollywood made a movie about your life in which Otis could speak, who should voice him?

Oh, definitely whatever actor played Napoleon Dynamite.

Visit the Peace, Love & Fostering blog.
