"...we should pass over all biographies of 'the good and the great,' while we search carefully the slight records of wretches who died in prison, in Bedlam, or upon the gallows."

Weekend Link Dump

Welcome to the first Link Dump of 2026!

Yet another rejected suitor turns to murder.

The theory that we started out as Martians.

The earliest known adult cremation.

The kidnapping and murder of Maria Ridulph.

Why a ball drops on New Year's Eve.

This is one of those year-end lists that make me despair for the human race.

Two centuries of New York City celebrating New Year's.

The mystery of a Pennsylvania skeleton.

A ghost pays a New Year's call.

Handel in London.

That's a wrap for this week!  See you on Monday, when we'll talk time-slips!  In the meantime, here's a bit of post-Christmas music.

  1. The 'Royal George' disaster makes sad reading. I certainly wouldn't have exonerated Durham of culpability. The oldest known cremation is interesting; I would not, however, have phrased the age of the person involved as 18 to 60. That's just saying 'haven't a clue'. It'd sound better as simply putting it as 'adult'. Irish airships? Very interesting. A close encounter with aliens is the most reasonable explanation - if such a close encounter is itself reasonable. And how exactly did Luca hitch a ride on meteorites to get to Earth?
