Hello, It makes many days I'm trying JPhoto, but I doesn't work at all for me... I'm using jusb 0.4.3, and the latest version of JPhoto. I tried to open it via Eclipse as normal user and as root, but the result is the same : I/O exception: USB Host support is unavailable. So, after doing some search on Google, i found that the module usb device filesystem had to be compiled. I checked, but it is already compiled. They were telling about a usbdevfs filesystem. Mine is usbfs. Is it different ? I'm working on Gentoo distribution. It would help me a lot if you could help me, I'm using this project for a student work. Thanks a lot ! ___________________________________________________________________________ Nouveau : téléphonez moins cher avec Yahoo! Messenger ! jPhoto has supported capture and download from the very earliest days. There was a very interesting early application using it for aerial mapping, with a pair of DC-4800 cameras. But remember it's not a video camera API, so you're not going to be able to stream. There's a delay to capture and write to flash memory (CF card), and a delay to download the image. Also eventually a delay to erase the image from that memory (or the whole card). So you'd need to write code to automate that process, but not code to do anything else. Is the PTP spec not available on-line any more, zero cost? I've still got a copy of the original, if you like I can send it. - Dave Shawn Willden wrote: > Sorry for the semi-OT nature of this post. Hi Shawn,
I've successfully made time-lapse movies with literally hundreds of
images using PTP cameras (Kodak DC-3400 & DC-4800) and gphoto2 on
Linux. I wrote simple PERL scripts that called gphoto2 to take the
images, download, delete, and repeat at specific time intervals. I'll
be happy to share those PERL scripts if you want.
I was not able use image streams "continuously" as you describe above on
my cameras. Given the time required to read/write to/from the flash
card and to download over a USB connection, I was able to get one image
every 30--60 seconds depending upon the image size (1768x1168 can be one
at the rate of 1 image every 50--60sec on the above cameras).
Using gphoto2 you can determine the camera features supported *WITHOUT*
actually purchasing the camera. For instance, just try the following
commands:
gphoto2 -a --camera "Canon PowerShot S40"
gphoto2 -a --camera "Olympus C-2020Z"
and you'll get the abilities for two different cameras. Notice that the
latter camera supports both image capture and image preview. The image
preview feature sounds like it might be able to give you a faster but
lower resolution image that might satisfy your positioning needs.
good luck,
Ed

Sorry for the semi-OT nature of this post. If you know of a more appropriate forum, please let me know. I need to be able to control a camera to take photos. I'm currently using the tools provided by Canon for their cameras, but those tools are Windows-only, and, of course, they're only for Canon cameras. I'd prefer to have a bit more choice of both camera and PC platform. What makes this difficult is that I not only need to be able to tell the camera to take a photo and download it, I need to be able to ask it for a continual stream of images to give a live view of what the camera lens is currently seeing. The purpose of this is to give feedback for proper positioning of the subject given a stationary camera. So my question is: does the PTP specification support this? If it does, I'll buy a copy of the spec and get to work implementing it in jPhoto. If not, well, I guess I'm stuck with proprietary solutions. Thanks for any comments/ideas/recommendations, Shawn. |

An easy way to deal with this is to assign your user ID rights to jphoto using sudo. If you have sudo on your distro, type visudo from root. This will bring up your sudoer file (which has to be edited using visudo). Add the following line to the section with the Command Alias' in it Cmnd_Alias JPHOTO=/usr/bin/jphoto (this assumes that's where you've put jphoto). Then, in the User Specification section, assign your user ID rights like this mirec ALL=NOPASSWD:JPHOTO This assumes your user id is mirec, if not, change it to whatever it is. Save the file. This should allow you to use jphoto as mirec with no request for a password. Cheers Cam _____________________________________________________________ ez2www.com Metasearch the Invisible Web. Use jphoto from CVS. Anyway gphoto2 supports PTP cameras as Kodak CX4230 (mine) and yours. With Knoppix ( http://www.knoppix.org ), works OK with no addittional configuration. Hello,
I hope, someone could help me.
I try to install a camera (DC 4800) for making pictures for a "fast-motion"

A RedHat-7.3-Server takes every 6 min a picture and saved it on the HDD.
But now I want to zoom the camera from a distance, using the PTP. I wrote
the following code to set a property, but the camera timed out at: "status=
dev.setDevicePropValue(propcode, devValue);". (I wrote it especially for
DigitalZoom, so I coded UInt8 and Value 16 in the compiled Program)
Have anyone the same problem, or have solved it?
Thank you for all answers,
Andreas Gerhard
The method:
private static void setprop(String argv[], int index) throws IOException
{
if (index != (argv.length - 2))
usage(-1);
int propcode;
Initiator dev;
DeviceInfo info;
propcode= DevicePropDesc.getPropertyCode(argv[index + 1]);
if (propcode < 0)
{
System.err.println("unrecognized property name: " + argv[index + 1]);
System.err.println("'jphoto devinfo' lists device properties");
System.exit(1);
}
dev= startCamera();
try
{
info= dev.getDeviceInfo();
System.err.println(
"Starting with " + DevicePropDesc.getPropertyName(propcode));
int status;
Object wert;
byte byteInput[] = new byte[1000];
byteInput[0]=0x0010;
Buffer buf = new Buffer(byteInput);
wert = DevicePropValue.get(0x0002, buf);
DevicePropValue devValue=new DevicePropValue(0x0002, wert);
devValue.dump(System.err);
status= dev.setDevicePropValue(propcode, devValue);
if (status == Response.OK)
System.out.println("Yippiehh!!");
else
{
System.out.print("... can't read ");
System.out.print(", ");
System.out.println(Response.getResponseString(status));
}
}
catch (Exception e)
{
System.out.println("Error:: " + e);
}
finally
{
closeSession(dev);
}
}

One minor correction: when I run the program on tty1 (as apposed to GUI
Konsole), I got more error report:
# ./jphoto images
PTP device at usb-e000-2
STORE: 0
usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 3, frame# 218
usbdevfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed dev 9 ep 0x81 len 64 ret -32
I/O exception: { response; len 12; StoreNotAvailable; xid 2 }
Thanks for any clue/suggestion,

In http://barrapunto.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/05/1028222&mode=thread&threshold= you have a review of the Kodak CX-4230 camera with jphoto (in Spanish). Basically it works with jphoto but: -Must use CVS version because the storage (internal memory) problems. -JPhtoto does not allow to put an object or file in the camera as it was forbidden by the camera firmware. It is allowed because with Windows software you can put any file in the camera internal memory (I have put 2 MP3's and 3 txt files). -In Windows you connect the USB cable to the camera and see a new regular drive (G: in my case) where you can copy, read, delete the photos and put, delete, modify, etc any other file up to the size of the memory. -The previous thing confirms that the camera can be mounted as a regular drive, how can we achieve this in Linux? It would be great to do an 'mount /dev/camera /mnt/mycamera' and be able to read, delete and write contents of the internal memory or MMC card of the camera. -If you know some way to do this mount please comment it, perhaps some JUSB tweaking, perhaps minor JPhoto changes? -If you know how to do it I can try to adap it. Thanks for JPhoto. Pepe Perez _________________________________________________________________ Charle con sus amigos online usando MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com |

As I recall, "movies" are not actually reported by the camera as an "image" type file, so there's some tweaking to be done to the download code. The hotsync cradle is not necessary, it does no magic. - Dave |
