Things We Talked About In This Episode of Sound Advice

The Story Behind Honey Bxby’s ‘Raw Honey’ EP and Performing With Lil’ Kim

  • Since dropping her latest EP, ‘Raw Honey,’ in May 2025, life has gone into turbo mode for her. The vocalist and songwriter has played a run of shows, including a live performance at the 2025 BET Awards with Lil’ Kim. The rap icon features on a remix of Honey Bxby’s track “LEFT EYE,” and the BET Awards performance marked a turning point in Honey Bxby’s ascendant career. Here, she reflects on preparing for the performance and how she got “so locked in” for it.
  • The 11-track project ‘Raw Honey’ explores love, heartbreak, self-empowerment and other emotional topics. Here, Honey takes us back to the making of the EP and breaks down some of her favorite tracks — “Laying In His Bed,” “Right On Time,” “Broken Mirrors” and “LEFT EYE” — and shares what made them so enjoyable to write and record. On tracks like “Broken Mirrors” and “Right On Time,” Honey Bxby explores deeper emotional territory than on her earlier work. She breaks down how telling authentic life stories and getting into heavier topics has helped her elevate her songwriting, and how she likes to get into the headspace for that type of writing.
  • Offering encouragement to fellow artists who may be looking to explore this kind of songwriting, Honey Bxby offers some sage advice: don’t be scared to be honest, because you never know who’ll be touched by your tracks. Be honest, let it flow and don’t overthink it.

Exploring Emotional Topics and Collaborating In The Studio On ‘Raw Honey’

  • On ‘Raw Honey,’ Honey Bxby worked with different songwriters and producers to shape her sound. This has been a new process for her, and one that she’s had to get more used to. Here, she reflects on the step up from writing solo to writing in studio sessions with other creatives, and speaks about the lessons she’s learned along the way. Seeing studio sessions as an exciting educational environment, she shares that observing how others write, record and conceptualize a track is a hugely beneficial way to absorb new musical ideas and ways of working.
  • One way that Honey Bxby gets in the studio zone is by approaching her lyric-writing in a conversational way. Across different tracks on ‘Raw Honey,’ she imagines having a conversation with a person in her life, and writes from the perspective of what she wishes she could, or should, say to that person. You can hear more about this process on Honey Bxby’s episode of Voice Notes, where she breaks down the making of key tracks from the project.

Working With Producer Worldwide Fresh and Incorporating 2000s R&B Influences

  • A key collaborator on the EP is Worldwide Fresh, a producer and songwriter from Brooklyn who’s worked with some of the biggest names in rap, soul, pop and R&B; from Beyoncé and Brandy, to Ari Lennox, Doechii, Sabrina Carpenter and more. Here, Honey Bxby tells the story of how she and Worldwide Fresh met and started working together, and how his insights have allowed her to elevate her sound on ‘Raw Honey.’
  • She and Worldwide Fresh connected in the studio through their mutual love of late 1990s and early ‘00s R&B and rap music. On ‘Raw Honey,’ Honey Bxby samples groups like SWV and Mobb Deep, and Lil’ Kim features on the “LEFT EYE” remix, too. Here, Honey Bxby talks about some of her favorite artists of that era, how she likes to fold those influences into her music, and why she’s so drawn to the style of beats from that time. Listening to this era of music as a young girl and teenager, she explains how she was inspired to become an artist herself.
  • It’s a path she always knew she would follow, she says; right out of high school, she was pushing her pen and wanting to break into the music industry. Here, she talks about how she got a great foundation through her producer father’s love of music, and tells the story of how she got an early breakthrough moment while working in nightlife.
  • In the last few years, Honey Bxby has grown her audience by posting her music on SoundCloud and engaging directly with her listeners on the platform. Here, she talks about how she likes to reply to comments left on her tracks, answer DMs from fans and be interactive with her fanbase. Through this connection, she says, her fans feel seen and appreciated, and she aims to nurture that connection as a guiding North star throughout her career.

How Playful Fashion and Y2K Aesthetics Inform Creating a Musical Persona, Crossing Over Into Pop Music and More

  • In her personal style, Honey Bxby is known for a playful, girly style that comes from pop music and Y2K-inspired fashion. Here, she breaks down how her fashion informs her musical persona, and how different ways of dressing allow her to write, record and perform music with different attitudes.
  • Growing up in Ashbury Park, a beachside town in New Jersey, Honey Bxby absorbed popular culture through music videos of rappers, R&B singers and pop stars. Here, she talks about some of her favorite artists — Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, among others — and how those pop influences fed into rap and R&B in the 2000s, like through Nick Minaj’s “Superbass” and Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s collaboration on “Telephone.” This colorful, playful, genre-blending time was very inspirational for Honey Bxby, who saw a way to bring her love of R&B, rap and pop together.
  • This inspiration continues today, and fuels Honey Bxby’s dreams for success. She also talks about how she’s influenced by vocalists like SZA, Summer Walker and Doja Cat, who have deftly shaped crossover moments between genres and tapped into wider pop culture.

Preparing For Performances, Growing On SoundCloud and What’s Next For Honey Bxby

  • With the release of ‘Raw Honey,’ Honey Bxby has developed a deeper connection with her fans on SoundCloud. “SoundCloud saved my life [as an artist],” she says. “I’m a SoundCloud baby!” Here, she talks about how the platform has played a pivotal role in her artistic growth and offers advice to other artists who are on the come up.
  • First of all, she says, keep posting your music regularly. Be thoughtful about the hashtags that you put on your tracks, too, she says, because they can get you into an algorithmic stream that guides your music to sympathetic listeners. But most importantly, she says, post music that’s real and true to who you are. Listeners prioritize “authenticity over polish,” she says wisely.
  • Being authentic has served Honey Bxby well recently. Not only has she opened for rapper Sexyy Red on tour, she’s also performed at the BET Awards and dropped a stream of music videos that showcase her style and flow. So how does she go about shaping her live persona, and how does she get ready for a performance?
  • Here, she shares advice for other artists: Keep practicing your live show, even when you don’t have any bookings, she says. If you’re prepared, and you get a call to perform at the last minute, you know that you’ll be ready for it.
  • Looking to the future, Honey Bxby is excited to be writing more new music, and is hoping to manifest some major collaborations. Her dream would be to work like Drake, Kehlani and Miley Cyrus, she says, without missing a beat.
