Over on his blog, author Derrick Ferguson, along with Lucas Garrett, Barry Reese, and Andrew Salmon, compiled a list of good intro books to the world of New Pulp. I won’t get into the whole “what is pulp/New Pulp?” discussion here because it has been discussed ad infinitum and no one is closer to agreeing than when it all began.

This is a nice list the guys put together. I'm honored to have my work listed there twice, even though I wouldn't classify Evil Ways as pulp. The Ruby Files, on the other hand, definitely qualifies.

I know there are those who disagree with me on Evil Ways and I get where they are coming from. I certainly don’t mind it being called Pulp or New Pulp. It’s just not how I think of it. Then again, my writing style is pretty consistent across my various projects so I can see where they’re coming
from. Regardless, I’m honored to have made the list.

2014 NEW PULP AWARDS VOTING NOW OPEN!

Tommy Hancock, Coordinator of the New Pulp Awards (formerly the Pulp Ark Awards) which recognize the best in New Pulp each year, announced today that the final ballot of the 2014 New Pulp Awards has been compiled and released and voting has opened.  Voting will continue through 3 PM CST March 12, 2014.  The Awards will be physically presented at MidSouthCon in Memphis, Tennessee on March 23, 2014 at 2:30 PM.

“This,” Hancock states, “has been a stellar year for nominations.  That being said, some may not see the nominations they made on the final ballot. This could be for more than one reason, the most likely being that two or more nominations were made in a category when only one, per the rules, should have been made OR because a work or creator nominated did not qualify for the award.  This happened most frequently with the New Writer category where several writers were nominated who had been published previously prior to 2013 in a book/publication that was considered to be New Pulp.  This happens frequently because readers find someone they like and think the book they’ve read is the first one the author did.  It explains why even Sax Rohmer received a nomination for New Writer of the Year, one he unfortunately does not qualify for.”

This is the first year of not only the new name for the Awards, but also that voting is open fully to the public.  In the past, only those who nominated a work or person for an award were allowed to vote.  “This is a big deal,” says Hancock. “This means the New Pulp Awards may actually be the only Pulp Awards truly representative of the fanbase. Having said that, though, we are highly aware that anyone nominated or anyone supporting a nominee could rally up a whole slew of friends, family, and strangers and cast votes for them or their favorite. What we are encouraging is for no one to do that, but to encourage those who have read and/or reviewed the work to vote based on their interest in the work, not because the writer is their third cousin removed.  We are having to work on a sort of honor system here and hope our voters will appreciate and respect that.”

Once a year the 109 members of the Yahoo Pulp Factory group, writers, artists, editors, publishers and fans, vote for the best Best Pulp Novel, Short Story, Cover Art and Interior Illustrations from the previous year.  These awards are revealed and trophies presented to the winners at the Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention.  This will be the fourth year they are handed out.

About the Pulp Ark Awards:
The Pulp Ark Awards began in 2011 with the first Annual Pulp Ark Convention and Conference.  The purpose of the Awards is to recognize the broad variety and creativity that makes up New Pulp today.

The winners of the 2013 Pulp Ark Awards was posted at All Pulp Saturday, March 9th and our very own Rick Ruby walked away with his very own award... Best New Pulp Character.

Rick Ruby came out of the gate swinging. Created by Sean Taylor and myself The Ruby Files surprised me when it was nominated for multiple categories in both the Pulp Ark and Pulp Factory Awards this year. The creative power behind The Ruby Files Vol. 1 anthology from Airship 27 was certainly tough to beat and we would like to take a moment to thank Sean Taylor, Andrew Salmon, William Patrick Maynard, Rob Moran, Mark Wheatley, Rob Davis, John Bruening, Ron Fortier, and Bobby Nash (who also walked away with the Best Author Award). The hard work of all of the fine folks involved helped down on his luck private eye, Rick Ruby stand out from the pack.

“The voting this year,” Hancock noted, “was exciting since it involved so many different creators, works and publishers.  Six different publishers are represented in the final tally, with both the Best Author and Best New Author winners being writers for various publishers in 2012.”

The Pulp Ark Lifetime Achievement Award, according to Hancock, is still being determined by the select committee chosen to give the honor to an individual who has done considerable work in furthering Pulp in his/her lifetime.

The awards, 8X10 engraved wooden plaques, will be awarded at Pulp Ark 2013 in Springdale Arkansas , the evening of Saturday, April 27, 2013. Hancock stated that all winners as well as nominees are encouraged to attend, but any winners who could not would receive their awards by mail. Pulp Ark thanks all who nominated, all who voted, and congratulations to all the nominees and especially to the winners of the Pulp Ark 2013 Awards!
