Description

BEVERAGE CONTAINING MORINGA POWDER
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a non-dairy maize beverage.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION Various beverages are consumed by people and these beverages range in nutritional value from the one extreme of being almost toxic but extremely tasty to the other extreme of being nutritious but not very palatable. Some beverages are nutritious and tasty.
A particular drink that sells in significant numbers in southern Africa is a fermented maize- based non-alcoholic non-diary energy drink known under various names, including Mageu, magou, mahewu, amahewu or mawe. Traditionally Mageu-drinks were mainly made of maize, but it has also been made from sorghum, soya and other cereals. For ease of reference this is referred to as "Mageu" in this specification. 1 Litre Mageu (with 9% solids) typically contains 78.5g carbohydrates, 5.5g protein, 4.2g fat; and has an energy value of 375 kcal. This energy value provides between 20-25% of the energy RDA of a typical South African mine worker which, during the course of his daily work, is exposed to high temperature and humidity and has to complete extremely strenuous tasks. Mageu is thus very popular with such workers, workers in other sectors, and also with people in their everyday life.
Although the Mageu drink is an effective energy drink, it is not perfect, in particular as far as essential nutrients (e.g. full spectrum vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes and antioxidants) composition, are concerned. In order to fully utilize the energy provided by the carbohydrates in the Mageu the body requires a host of essential nutrients to be present. If essential nutrients are not present then the body is taxed and the energy delivery and duration is curtailed. There is a need for a beverage that has similar taste as the Mageu drink, but with improved essential nutrient composition in order to maximise energy delivery and duration and to assist the body in processing the carbohydrates in the Mageu.
In this specification the phrase "Moringa powder" shall mean a powder made of parts of the Moringa tree, specifically but not limited to the oleifera and stenopetala species, and including, but not limited to, powder made from leaves, seeds, and roots of such trees, or any combination thereof.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the invention to provide a beverage and a beverage concentrate which at least partly overcome the abovementioned problem.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with this invention there is provided a powdered beverage concentrate comprising a mixture of powdered non-dairy maize drink concentrate and Moringa powder.
There is further provided for the powdered beverage concentrate to include Moringa powder to maize drink concentrate in a ratio of between 1 :85 and 30:85 by weight.
There is still further provided for the powdered beverage concentrate to include Moringa powder to maize drink concentrate in a ratio of about 5:85 by weight. In accordance with a further feature of the invention there is provided a liquid beverage concentrate comprising a mixture of the powdered beverage concentrate as defined above with a volumetrically similar amount of liquid, and preferably for the liquid to comprise water.
The invention further provides for a beverage concentrate sachet containing a predetermined weight of the beverage concentrate for mixing with a predeterminable volume of beverage liquid to create a beverage of predeterminable volume having a predetermined concentration of the constituents of the beverage concentrate therein.
There is further provided for each sachet to be provided in predetermined weight for mixing with any one of 500ml, 1 litre, 2 litres, or 5 litres beverage liquid respectively, and preferably for each sachet to contain an amount of beverage concentrate equal to a ratio of about 90g powdered beverage concentrate per 500 ml serving of beverage liquid.
The invention also provides for a beverage concentrate sachet containing two compartments separated by a frangible partition, the one compartment containing a predetermined weight of the beverage concentrate and the other containing a predetermined volume of beverage liquid, with the partition operatively being frangible to mix the contents of the two compartments to create a beverage of predetermined volume having a predetermined concentration of the constituents of the beverage concentrate therein.
There is further provided for the beverage liquid to comprise water or pre-made non-dairy maize drink liquid, and preferably for the maize drink to comprise a fermented maize drink, further preferably Mageu. There is further provided for the powdered beverage concentrate or the liquid beverage concentrate to include a sweetener, preferably chosen from any one or more of the group of natural and artificial sweeteners, further preferably from one or more of Stevia or Aspartame.
There is still further provided the powdered beverage concentrate or the liquid beverage concentrate to include a flavourant.
According to a further feature of the invention there is provided a beverage comprising a mixture of non-dairy maize drink, preferably fermented, and Moringa powder, with the Moringa powder preferably mixed with the maize drink in a ratio of between 1 g to 30g Moringa powder per 500ml serving of the maize drink.
There is further provided for the mixture to most preferably have about 5g Moringa powder per 500ml serving of the maize drink. According to a further feature of the invention there is provided for the beverage to include a sweetener, preferably chosen from any one or more of the group of natural and artificial sweeteners, further preferably from one or more of Stevia or Aspartame, and still further for the beverage to include a flavourant. There is also provided for the maize drink to comprise Mageu in a pre-made liquid form or powdered form regardless of whether the Moringa powder is added during or after the manufacture of the Mageu liquid or Mageu powder. These and other features of the invention are described in more detail below.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
A preferred concentrate mixture according to the invention comprises Moringa powder mixed with Mageu powder or liquid Mageu. The mixture is packaged in sachets or liquid containers with a predetermined weight or volume which, when mixed with a predetermined amount of water or pre-made liquid Mageu, provides such a predetermined volume of Moringa-Mageu beverage. The sachets or liquid containers may be sized to prepare for example a beverage of 500ml, 1 litre, 2 litres, 5 litres, and any other different volume that may be required.
The powder or liquid concentrate mixture includes preferably about 5g Moringa powder for every 85g Mageu powder or equivalent volume of liquid Mageu. The resulting mixture of 90g powder is dissolved into 500ml of water to create the Moringa-Mageu beverage. A liquid mixture includes preferably about 5g Moringa powder in 500ml Mageu solution, which in turn is created by mixing 85g Mageu powder with 500ml water. This again creates about 500ml of Moringa-Mageu beverage.
An optional addition to the mixture is that of a sweetener and/or a flavourant. The sweetener may include a natural and/or artificial sweetener, more specifically Stevia or Aspartame.
It has been established by the applicant that using less than about 1 g Moringa powder to every 85g Mageu dilutes the impact of the Moringa to such an extent that its presence in the mixture becomes irrelevant. The preferable lower limit of the Moringa in the mixture, whether powdered or liquid, is thus a ratio of 1 :85 Moringa powder to maize drink powder or equivalent volume of liquid Mageu. Similarly for the liquid mixture the preferable lower limit is 1 g Moringa powder per 500ml fermented maize drink solution regardless of whether the liquid Mageu is pre-made or made by the addition of water to a powder mix of Moringa and Mageu powder. On the upper limit the applicant has established that above about 30g Moringa powder to every 85g Mageu or equivalent liquid volume of Mageu the impact of the Moringa to the mixture is overpowering, with possible adverse side effects such as diarrhoea that may occur in some consumers. The upper limit of the Moringa in the mixture is thus preferably a ratio of 30:85 Moringa powder to maize drink powder or equivalent liquid volume of Mageu. Similarly for the liquid mixture the upper limit is 30g Moringa powder per 500ml fermented maize drink solution regardless of whether the Moringa powder is added to pre-made Mageu liquid during or after manufacture of the Mageu liquid or to Mageu powder to make up a particular but not specified volume of liquid Mageu by the addition of water.
It will be appreciated that the above description is not intended to limit the scope of the invention, and is given by way of example only.
Changes to the concentrate mixtures and ratios of Moringa powder mixed with Mageu powder or Mageu liquid, regardless of whether the Mageu liquid is pre-made or made up by the addition of a suitable but not specified volume of water, are possible whilst remaining within the scope of the invention.
It is further possible to use Mageu whether pre-made or made by the addition of water. The sachets may be sized to any suitable size or volume, and not only such to be used with beverage liquid of 500ml, 1 litre, 2 litres, 5 litres.
It is also possible to use sweeteners other than those mentioned. It will be appreciated that the concentrate may be packaged in any useful form, such as sachets of varying sizes or it may be bulk packaged.
It will be appreciated that the maize drink is non-dairy, but that it may be produced in fermented or non-fermented form. In at least South Africa liquor law regulations stipulate that Mageu has to have less than 1 % ethanol by volume.
It will also be appreciated that the sachets may be provided in the form of a two-compartment sachet, with the one including the beverage concentrate and the other a liquid, such as water, with a frangible partition between them that allows a person to break the partition and mix the contents to create a beverage. This sachet may also be provided with a drinking spout and/or a straw.
