Definitions
- the present invention relates to exercise apparatus, more specifically, those for weight training.
- Weight training normally utilises the force of gravity to oppose the force generated by the muscles - normally, weighted barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells are lifted and moved by the user in different ways to achieve different effects on a range of muscle groups.
- a barbell is a single bar with weighted plates on either end that users grip with both hands.
- a dumbbell is a smaller bar with weighted plates on either end that users grip with a single hand, usually with one dumbbell in each hand.
- a kettlebell is a spherical weight with a single handle.
- Stopping between exercises to find the correct equipment is an inconvenience for the user that can significantly slow down an exercise routine. Purchasing so many types of equipment is expensive for both individuals and weight training centres. Furthermore, it is inconvenient to store all of the necessary components, which take up a great deal of space. It would therefore be beneficial to have a single piece of exercise equipment that can be used for all weight training exercises, rather than using several different pieces of equipment.
- CN2827448 to Zhou discloses a combined apparatus with a segmented rod. When all three rod segments are connected, weights may be added to either end and the apparatus may be used as a barbell. When the middle segment is removed, weights may be added to either end of each of the two outer segments and each outer segment used as a dumbbell.
- the apparatus requires assembly between uses for different exercises, so it also slows down the exercise routine.
- the points at which the three segments connect to one another could be structurally weak and may fall apart when weights are added. If the user is holding the barbell and weights above the head or in an awkward position when it falls apart, this could lead to serious injury.
- the invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
- a need has arisen for an exercise apparatus that can used in place of barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells that is provided as a single piece with no assembly required. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide such an apparatus.
- a multiple exercise apparatus to receive weights comprising: a first, shoulder-width horizontal bar; two vertical bars extending from the first horizontal bar at least a handbreadth apart; a second horizontal bar joining the two vertical bars; a third vertical bar extending from the second horizontal bar and comprising a thread.
- the apparatus By holding the first horizontal bar with both hands, the apparatus may be used as a barbell. By holding the first horizontal bar with one hand, the apparatus may be used as a dumbbell or a kettlebell.
- An advantage of the present invention is that it allows the user to engage in exercises normally requiring barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells using a single piece of equipment.
- a further advantage is that the apparatus is provided in a single piece with no assembly required, speeding up the exercise routine and ensuring that it cannot fall apart and cause injury.
- Figure one shows a front view of a preferred embodiment of the invention.
- a multiple exercise apparatus to receive weights comprising: a first, shoulder-width horizontal bar 101; two vertical bars 102 extending from the first horizontal bar 101 at least a handbreadth apart; a second horizontal bar 103 joining the two vertical bars 102; a third vertical bar 104 extending from the second horizontal bar 1 3 and comprising a thread.
- the first horizontal bar 101 may comprise grips for holding.
- the grips may be knurled sections of the horizontal bar itself. Alternatively, it may be a material suitable to provide grip, such as rubber, added to the horizontal bar or any other method of providing grip known in the art.
- the apparatus is preferably formed of stainless steel, though any suitably strong, rigid material known in the art may be used.
- the apparatus may be provided with a weight 105 welded or otherwise permanently affixed to the third vertical bar 104. Alternatively, it may be provided without a permanently affixed weight, allowing the user to add their own weights to the third vertical bar 104 to be secured by an exercise bar nut.
- the exercise bar nut is ideally a standard nut used on exercise bars such as barbells and dumbbells. Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
- the apparatus is provided without a permanently affixed weight, the user takes their existing weighted plates, or plates optionally provided with the apparatus, and adds the desired plated to the third vertical bar 104, securing them with the exercise bar nut.
- the apparatus By holding the first horizontal bar 101 with both hands, the apparatus may be used as a barbell.
- the apparatus By holding the first horizontal bar 101 with one hand, the apparatus may be used as a dumbbell or a kettlebell.
