Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and an arrangement for improving measuring quality, accuracy and reliability of line laser based scanners that are based on exact position and/or alignment of laser line. The invention relates in particular to the field of mechanical forest industry and improves the work of 3D-scanner based on triangulation principle. Image sensors are introduced and they are arranged so that laser light from light source goes directly into the sensors. The image sensors can detect the intensity and distribution of the light beam from the light source and can also detect if the light source needs maintenance or replacing or recalibrating before the quality of scanning deteriorates. The exact position of the light source can also be determined if its light beam will be driven directly to the image sensors which will facilitate the repositioning of the light source.

Description

ARRANGEMENT AND METHOD IN MEASURING SYSTEM
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a method and an arrangement for improving measuring quality, accuracy and reliability of line laser based scanners that are based on exact position and/or alignment of laser line. The invention relates in particular to the field of mechanical forest industry and improves the work of 3D-scanner based on triangulation principle.
PRIOR ART
Light sources or laser scanners are used in wood processing to recognize lumber profiles (US 2007/0263918 A1 ) or measuring of the lumber objects (WO03042631 A1 ).
Also known is the possibility of measuring the shape of an object, that is to say the cross-sectional geometric profile thereof, by illuminating it with a light source and detecting the position of the representation of the reflected light on a sensor, which observes the object from a given angle, so-called triangulation. This will be referred to hereinafter as profile measurement. Combining light dispersion measurement and profile measurement by illuminating the wood surface with more than one light source (SE501650 C2), one for light dispersion and one for profile measurement, in one image is likewise known. The problems with scanners and image sensors in mechanical forest industry are that dust and debris, vibration and mechanical impacts of wood pieces alter the measuring quality and accuracy of the scanners or sensors.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the invention to provide improved arrangement for the measuring system, improving its quality, accuracy and reliability. - It is another object of the invention to provide improved method for the detection of the displacement of the light source, decrease of the effect of it and to facilitate accurate replacement of it.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 depicts general overview of the arrangement accordingly to the invention.
Figure 2 depicts side view of the arrangement accordingly to the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
The invention will now be described in more detail with examples of embodiments and with reference to the figures attached. Figure 1 shows a set-up accordingly to the invention with a camera 4, a light source 3, for example a laser line, an object 5 to be imaged and at least one image sensor 1 or 2. The preferred embodiment has two image sensors 1 ,2 but optionally there can be more image sensors if required. Image sensors 1 , 2 are arranged so that laser light from light source 3 goes directly into the image sensors 1 , 2. Camera 4 makes the 3D measurement of the profile of the object 5.
Preferably the image sensors 1 , 2 are without lenses but optionally they can be equipped with lenses.
The image sensors 1 , 2 can have one (line scan sensor) or several lines (matrix sensor) of image. The image sensors 1 , 2 are in an accurately fixed position so they can monitor the position of the light source 3. The image sensors 1 , 2 have pixel size less than 1/10 mm making them very precise to detect even the slight displacement of the light beam.
The image sensors 1 , 2 also can detect the intensity and distribution of the light beam from the light source 3. The image sensors 1 , 2 also can detect if the light source 3 needs maintenance or replacing or recalibrating before the quality of scanning deteriorates. The exact position of the light source 3 can be determined if its light beam will be driven directly to the image sensors 1 , 2 which will facilitate the repositioning of the light source 3. It is likewise stated in the description that measurement is performed on a piece of timber. The invention obviously works just as well in measuring the geometric profile of and/or the light dispersion in an object of some other shape or of a material other than wood. The invention must thereby be regarded as being limited only by the scope of the patent claims below.
