  • the inner wall 58 of the closure 14 may be sized for an interference fit with the inner wall 34 of the fitment 22, wherein the inner wall 58 may be in close sealing contact with the inner wall 34 and may deflect radially inwardly to some degree.

  • the closure 114 includes a base 142 having an outer wall 150 and a deck 148.
  • the deck 148 includes a spout 164 having a front portion 168 extending from a top surface of the deck 148, and an annular seal bead 160 extending from an undersurface of the deck 148.
  • the deck 148 also includes an inner wall 158 for axial or abutment sealing engagement with the end wall 130 of the fitment 122.
  • the inner wall 158 is disposed laterally or radially between the front portion 168 of the spout 164 and the annular seal bead 160 and also extends from the undersurface of the deck 148.
  • the inner wall 158 is preferably tapered in a radially inward direction as shown, such that it is a conical annular seal wall. Accordingly, when the closure 114 is coupled to the fitment 122, the inner wall 158 gets compressed between the fitment end wall 130 and the closure deck 148. In this position, an inner periphery 159 of the wall 158 is located generally beneath the front portion 168 of the spout 164 but radially outward of the inner peripheral wall 134 of the fitment 122. As best shown in FIGS.
  • the base 42 additionally may include a dispensing opening 62 in the deck 48 and a spout 64, which may extend from the deck 48 and at least partially around the dispensing opening 62.
  • the spout 64 may be at least somewhat teardrop-shaped in plan view as exemplified by FIG. 7, and may include a rear portion 66, a front portion 68 with a chamfer 70 (FIG. 9), and inclined sides 72 that may extend from and/or between the rear and front portions 66, 68.
  • the spout 64 may be directional such that it is forward biased as exemplified by one or more of the following features: the chamfer 70, the inclined sides 72, and/or a radially forward or outwardly leaning inside surface of the front portion 68.
  • the base 42 may also include a bead 74, which may be semi-circular in shape, at a forward end for cooperating with the lid 44 as will be described herein below.
  • the lid 44 may include a base wall 76 extending forward from a rear end at the hinge 46 to a front end.
  • the lid 44 may also include a pintle 78 extending from the base wall 76 for sealing receipt within the dispensing opening 62 of the base 42 when the lid 44 is in its closed position against the base 42.
  • the pintle 78 may have a shape complementary to that of the spout 64 of the base 42 and sized for acceptance in close contact therewith, such that the pintle 78 may cooperate with the spout 64 to align the lid with the base as the Hd is moved to the closed position.
  • the pintle 78 may include a rear portion 80, a front portion 82, and sides 84 therebetween that may all be of substantially similar length.
  • the lid 44 may further include a peripheral edge 86 that may terminate the base wall 76 of the lid 44 and a bead 88 that may further extend from the peripheral edge 86 at the forward end of the lid 44.
  • the lid bead 88 may be semicircular in shape and may be engageable with the corresponding base bead 74 for releasably holding the lid 88 in its closed position with respect to the base 42.
  • the base bead 74 may be disposed inboard of an outer periphery 90 of the base 42 and elevated with respect to a shoulder portion 92 between the deck 48 and the outer wall 50 to define a space therebetween.
  • the lid bead 88 may include a flat surface 94 corresponding to the shoulder portion 92 of the base 42 and may include a tip 96 that snaps into engagement with the base bead 74 at least partially in the defined space between the base bead 74 and the shoulder portion 92.
  • a user may hold the container 16 with a first hand and grip the closure 14 with a second hand to twist or unthread the closure 14 from the fitment 22 of the aseptic package 12 to gain access to the removable pull ring 24 and panel 26 of the fitment 22.
  • the user may pull the pull ring 24 to break the panel 26 away from the rest of the fitment 22.
  • the user may discard the pull ring 24 and panel 26, replace or rethread the closure 14 back onto the now unsealed aseptic package 12.
  • the user may use the thumb of the second hand to apply upward pressure to the front end of the lid 44 to disengage the corresponding beads 74, 88 of the base 42 and the lid 44.
  • the user may pivot the lid 44 about the hinge 46, and invert the package 10 to some degree so that fluent product may be dispensed out of the container 16 and through the dispensing system. Subsequently, the user may reorient the package 10 in a generally upright position, and grip the closure 14 with the second hand so as to pivot the lid 44 about the hinge 46 back toward the base 42.
  • the pintle 78 contacts the spout 64 to wipe the spout and align the lid 44 to the base 42. More specifically, the front portion 82 of the pintle 78 may contact an inside surface of the front end 68 of the spout 64 to wipe fluent material from the spout 64 back toward the interior of the container 16.
  • the sides 84 and the rear end 80 of the pintle 78 may similarly engage the corresponding sides 72 and rear end 66 of the spout 64 to wipe clean the surfaces thereof.
  • the length of the pintle 78 may be longer than the length of the spout 64 such that there is longitudinal overlap therebetween and so that a free end of the pintle 78 may extend beyond the undersurface of the deck 48 and past the dispensing opening 62.
  • the lid bead 88 may snap into engagement with the corresponding base bead 74 to lock the closure 14 in a sealed condition so as to reliably seal the package 10.

Abstract
