Description
METHOD FOR PROVIDING LOCATION-BASED ADVERTISING SERVICE
Technical Field
[I] Cross-Reference(s) to Related Applications [2]
[3] The present invention claims priority of Korean Patent Application No.
10-2007-0093318, filed on September 13, 2007, which is incorporated herein by reference.
[4] The present invention relates to a system and method for providing a location-based advertisement using location information of a user terminal; and, more particularly, to a method for providing an advertising service based on a location of a user terminal by continuously transmitting a location-based advertisement and related information to the user terminal based on location information of the user terminal.
[5] This work was supported by the IT R&D program of MIC/IITA [2007-P10-21, Development of MobileOK standards for Next Generation Web Application].
[6]
Background Art
[7] As networks have been developed, mobile computing for using a variety of user terminals have been active. Users of the user terminals in such a mobile computing environment want to acquire various information based on their current locations.
[8] As general mobile computing terminals, there are mobile communication terminals.
Since wireless communication and data processing techniques have been rapidly developed, the users have been able to use various functions such as voice communications, internet connections, video communications and video message delivery with the mobile communication terminals.
[9] Further, since the mobile communication terminals came into wise use, a significant amount of communication among people has been conducted by using them. That is, the mobile communication terminals are essential mobile computing means.
[10] In particular, the mobile communication terminals can calculate their current locations relatively accurately within an error of a few meters to tens of meters by using base stations. If a mobile communication terminal is equipped with a GPS unit, it can not only calculate its current location more accurately but also can transmit/receive various information in real time through the internet and mobile communication networks.
[I I] Accordingly, there have been many studies and researches on so-called location- based services (LBS) for calculating locations of mobile communication terminals and providing data services based on their locations.
[12] As a prior art related to this, the advertising service system registers subscribers who will receive location-dependent advertisements in advance, receives locations of the terminals from the wireless communication network and provides advertisements corresponding to the locations as scheduled.
[13] However, since the terminals who want to receive location-dependent advertisements have to register in advance according to the above system, the terminals which can be provided with the advertisements are significantly limited. Further, if already registered to receive location-dependent advertisements, the subscribers have to receive the advertisements without choice.
[14] In another prior art related to the method for providing a location-based advertising service, if the user of the mobile communication terminal signs up for the wireless internet service for text advertising in order to receive advertisements, the location of the mobile communication terminal is detected and advertisements corresponding to the location are provided. Then, the advertisement reception result is feedbacked to charge for the advertisement reception.
[15] However, since the terminals have to be signed up for the wireless internet services for text advertising in advance, the terminals which are provided with advertisements are extremely limited.
[16] As described above, the conventional methods for providing location-based advertising services consider the mobile communication terminals as the main target and there are concerns about network connection costs. Therefore, search results based on the location are provided only if the user requests the search and, in case of an automatic service, advertisements are provided to the users only signed up in advance.
[17] It is difficult to apply the conventional methods for providing location-based advertising services to a number of user terminals. Further, if results are provided and displayed on a mobile phone based upon query inputs by a user, mobile phone users who have an inconvenient input device and UI will suffer.
[18]
Disclosure of Invention Technical Problem
[19] In view of the above, the present invention provides location-based advertisements to a user terminal at predetermined time intervals based on location information of the user terminal.
[20] In accordance with the present invention, when advertisements based on location information obtained from the user terminal are transmitted from an advertising server and displayed on the user terminal, they are automatically provided based on situation information accumulated in the past such as connection frequency, service frequency or related search, so that a user can conveniently get advertisements relevant to its current location. [21]
Technical Solution
[22] In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a method for providing a location-based advertising service, the method including: providing location information of a user terminal to a local ad server at predetermined time intervals by the user terminal; searching for at least one of location-based advertisements based on the location information by the local ad server; and transmitting the searched location-based advertisements to the user terminal to display by the local ad server.
[23] In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a method for providing a location-based advertising service, the method comprising: connecting a user terminal to an adaptive location ad server; transmitting an advertisement request message including a query with either one or both of location information and advertisement conditions generated by the user terminal to the local ad server;creating a result page by selectively integratinglocation-based advertisements or general advertisementsinto search result data for the query based on the advertisement conditions; and transmitting the created result page to the user terminal to display.
[24] In accordance with the present invention, the user terminal is provided with advertisements related to user location and various auxiliary functions for the advertisements so that advertisements with high usage can be provided to the user.

Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
[35] Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings so that they can be readily implemented by those skilled in the art. In accordance with the present invention, advertisements based on location information of a user terminal are continuously provided to the user terminal by using location information automatically taken from the user terminal.
[36] Fig.1 is a block diagram of a system for providing a location-based advertising service in accordance with the embodiment of the present invention.
[37] Referring to Fig. 1, the system for providing a location-based advertising service includes a user terminal 100, a wireless/wireline communication network 110, an auxiliary information providing server 120, a terminal information storage server 130 and an adaptive ad (advertisement) and search device 200.A mobile communication terminal, e.g., a smart phone 101, a PDA 102, a laptop 103to which a location information acquisition device such as a GPS receiver unit can be attached is used as the user terminal 100. The user terminal 100 periodically sends an advertisement request message to the adaptive ad and search device 200 through the wireless/wireline communication network 110 by using location information acquired by the location information acquisition device. Then, the user terminal 100 receives the result and provides it to the user by displaying it on a display unit (not shown). The advertisement request message transmitted from the user terminal 100 may optionally include a query or advertising conditions in addition to the location information. The GPS receiver unit has been exemplified as a location receiving device for providing location information of the user terminal 100 but, if the user terminal 100 is not equipped with a GPS unit, an assigned IP address upon connection to the wireless/wireline communication network 110 may be provided to the adaptive ad and search device 200 instead.
[38] The adaptive ad and search device 200 includes a search engine server 210, an adaptive location ad (advertising) server 220, a situation information database 230, a local ad (advertising) server 240 and an ad (advertisement) database 250. The adaptive ad and search device 200 receives the advertisement request message from the wireless/wireline communication network 110 and processes it. [39] If the advertisement request message includes a query, the adaptive ad and search device 200 forwards the query to the search engine server 210, and then the search engine server 210 starts searching for the query and provides the search result data to the adaptive location ad server 220. The adaptive location ad server 220 sends the search result data from the search engine server 210 to a local ad server 240 corresponding to the location information of the advertisement request message and the local ad server 240 transmits at least one of advertisements provided from an area corresponding to the location information to the adaptive location ad server 220.
[40] On the other hand, the adaptive location ad server 220 also selects at least one of general advertisements stored in the ad database 250. After that, the adaptive location ad server 220 transmits the search result data for the query with a location-based advertisement provided by the local ad server 240 or a general advertisement to the user terminal 100.
[41] The adaptive location ad server 220 includes, as shown in Fig. 2, an ad
(advertisement) registration module 221 for registering advertisements provided by external servers in the ad database 250, an ad (advertisement) list creation module 222 for creating an advertising list by using the location-based advertisements from the local ad server 240 or the general advertisements and an ad (advertisement) ranking module 223 for ranking advertisements based on the situation information database 230 with a user preference database 231 and an ad (advertisement) usage database 232 in creating the advertising list. It further includes an integration module 224 for, if a query is included in the advertisement request message, combining the result data for the query provided from the search engine server 210 and the advertising list from the ad list creation module 222, a video ad (advertisement)server module 225 for providing video advertisements among the location-based advertisements and a tag processingmodule 226 for extracting, managing and processing tag information similar to various keywords. The adaptive location ad server 220 also includes an ad (advertisement) success evaluation module 227 for recording the advertising result in the situation information database 230 and for utilizing advertising success extracted from the ad usage database 232 of the situation information database 230, a web server module 228 for providing data to the user terminal 100 using the HTTP and a situation information management module 229 for managing the situation information database 230 which stores information about user preferences, advertisement usage and the like.
[42] The situation information database 230 has the user preference database 231 and the ad usage database 232.
[43] The user preference database 231 stores user preferences for each advertisement which are analyzed based on how often each advertisement is selected and connected by users. [44] The ad usage database 232 stores satisfaction for each advertisement, i.e. satisfaction ranked by the users who were provided with each advertisement.
[45] The ad ranking module 223 ranks the searched location-based advertisements and general advertisements based on user preferences for each advertisement stored in the user preference database 231 or satisfaction for each advertisement stored in the ad usage database 232.
[46] The local ad server 240 is an external advertising means installed in different areas and it is connected to open interfaces and web services to transmit at least one of advertisements provided from the corresponding area to the adaptive location ad server 220 upon the advertisement request from the adaptive location ad server 220.
[47] The ad database 250 stores advertising contents, advertiser information, image advertisements, location information and advertising records of the advertisements registered in the ad registration module 221.
[48] The auxiliary information providing server 120 provides auxiliary information about the advertisement selected by the user terminal 100 among the advertisements provided to the user terminal 100.
[49] The terminal information storage server 130 stores and manages terminal information such as the LCD size of a terminal or supported codec for each terminal identification. That is, if the adaptive location ad server 220 requests terminal information by using terminal identification, the terminal information storage server 130 supplies terminal information corresponding to the terminal identification to the adaptive location ad server 220.
[50] On the other hand, if one of the advertisements displayed on the user terminal 100 is selected, a detailed menu of the selected advertisement is displayed. The detailed menu may include, for example, a detailed advertisement information displaying function, a function for calling a phone number provided from the advertisement, a function for showing an advertised location on a map and a function for finding the best direction from the current location of the user terminal 100 to a destination location. The detailed menu may also include a function for sending mail with a displayed location on the map, a function for sending email to an email address provided from the advertisement, a function for finding providers providing services related to the selected advertisement in the same area, a function for displaying different services in the same area, a function for finding search results related to the advertisement and a user evaluation function for the advertising site.
[51] On the other hand, if there are two or more of location-based advertisements or general advertisements searched by the adaptive location ad server 220, the ad ranking module 223 creates an advertising list by using them. At that time, a priority on the advertising list is based on user preferences or satisfaction on the searched adver- tisements.
[52] The adaptive location ad server 220 classifies the searched advertisements into categories and provides a menu for the categories. Once one on the menu is selected, an advertisement corresponding to the selected one is overlaid on a screen of the user terminal 100.
[53] Further, the advertisement overlaid on the screen of the user terminal 100 may be replaced by another advertisement in the same category at predetermined time intervals.
[54] The categories may typically include a restaurant, accommodation, the public, news, traffic, reservation and the like and the menu for the categories may be placed at the top, bottom, left, and right of the screen of the user terminal 100.
[55] The ad list creation module 222 can create the advertising list by using a standard distribution format based on XML such as RSS or ATOM.
[56] In Fig. 3, the user terminal 100 includes a location information acquisition unit 300 for acquiring location information by using a location information receiving device or a location information calculation algorithm, a browser 320for browsing the search result data for the user s query input and location-based advertisements, an application program 310 for running various application programs of the user terminal 100 and an ad (advertisement) control unit 330 for receiving and displaying the location-based advertisements on the display unit while the various application programs are running on the user terminal 100 on the basis of the environmental conditions for advertisement reception determined by the user, each of which may be a program recorded in a recording unit.
[57] A process for providing advertisements to the user terminal 100 by using the system for providing a location-based advertising service configured as described above will be described with reference to Figs. 4 to 10.
[58] Fig. 4 is a flow chart for describing a location-based advertisement servicing process in accordance with the embodiment of the present invention.
[59] Referring to Fig. 4, the adaptive location ad server 220 receives location information from the user terminal 100 at predetermined time intervals (step S400). To be specific, the user terminal 100 transmits location information obtained by a location information receiving device to the adaptive location ad server 220, and otherwise, it provides IP information assigned from the wireless/wireline communication network 110 to the adaptive location ad server 220.
[60] The adaptive location ad server 220 requests an advertisement for the local ad server
240 corresponding to the location information received from the user terminal 100 (step S402).
[61] Then, the adaptive location ad server 220 receives location-based advertisements from the local ad server 240 (step S404) and creates a location-based advertising list by using the ad ranking module 223 (step S406). That is, the ad ranking module 223 creates the location-based advertising list by searching the situation information database 230 for user preferences and/or satisfaction of each location-based advertisement provided by the local ad server 240 and by assigning a priority to the advertisement with higher user preferences and/or satisfaction.
[62] The location-based advertising list created in this way is sent to the user terminal 100 by the web server module 228 of the adaptive location ad server 220 to be displayed thereon (step S408).
[63] Fig. 5 is a flow chart for describing a location-based advertisement servicing process in accordance with another embodiment of the present invention, and Fig. 6 shows a search page provided by the adaptive location ad server of the present invention.
[64] Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, the user accesses a search page 602 provided by the adaptive location ad server 220 through the browser 320 of the user terminal 100 (step S500) and then the user enters a query into a query input field 604 in the search page 602and clicks a search button 606 (step S502). Then, the browser 320 of the user terminal 100 transmits an advertisement request message including location information of the user terminal 100 and the query to the adaptive location ad server 220 through the wireless/wireline communication network 110 (step S504). At that time, the search page 602 is equipped with an interface for setting advertising conditions and, if the user sets the advertising conditions through the interface, the set advertising conditions are transmitted to the adaptive location ad server 220 with the location information and query. Here, the advertising conditions indicate whether to insert location-based advertisements into the search result data for the query, whether to insert general advertisement data into the search result data, or whether not to include an advertisement at all.
[65] The adaptive location ad server 220 forwards the query in the advertisement request message to the search engine server 210, which then sends the search result data for the query back to the adaptive location ad server 220 (step S506).
[66] After that, the adaptive location ad server 220 determines whether to provide the user terminal 100 with location-based advertisements on the basis of the advertising conditions contained in the advertisement request message (step S508).
[67] According to the result of step S508, if the advertising conditions indicate location- based advertisements, the ad list creation module 222 of the adaptive location ad server 220 searches the ad database 250 using the location information in the advertisement request message, extracts at least one of location-based advertisements and provides them to the integration module 224 (step S510). If there are two or more of location- based advertisements searched from the ad database 250, the ad list creation module 222 works together with the ad ranking module 223 to create a location-based advertising list. In other words, the advertising list is created by using user preferences and/or satisfaction of each advertisement, i.e. situation information stored in the situation information database 230. More specifically, the advertising list where a priority is given to the advertisement with higher user preferences and/or satisfaction is created and transmitted to the integration module 224.
[68] The present invention has been described with respect to the location-based advertising list created based on the situation information in the situation information database 230. However, as another example, the location-based advertising list can be created by extracting tag information and tag links from the search result data, i.e. the search result site by using the tag processing module 226 and then applying them to advertisement ranking decision.
[69] Further, although the present invention has been described with respect to the adaptive location ad server 220 which searches the ad database 250 for the location- based advertisements, the adaptive location ad server 220 requests the local ad server 240 corresponding to the location information to send location-based advertisements.
[70] On the other hand, if the location-based advertising list is for video advertisements, the adaptive location ad server 220 extracts metadata included in each frame of each video advertisement through the video ad server module 225. If the extracted metadata contains tag information, tag links are extracted by using the tag processing module 226 and applied to ranking the advertisements to thereby create the location-based advertising list.
[71] The integration module 224 creates a result page by combining the location-based advertising list from the ad list creation module 222 and the search result data and displays it on the display unit of the user terminal 100 through the web server module 228 (steps S512 and S514).
[72] According to the result of step S508, if the advertising conditions do not indicate location-based advertisements, the adaptive location ad server 220 determines whether the advertising conditions include general advertisements (step S516).
[73] As the result of step S516, if the advertising conditions include general advertisements, the ad list creation module 222 works together with the ad ranking module
223 to search for advertisements from the ad database 250 and then create a general advertising list. That is, the advertising list is created based on user preferences and/or satisfaction of each advertisement, i.e. situation information stored in the situation information database 230 (step S518).
[74] The integration module 224 creates a result page by combining the general advertising list from the ad list creation module 222 and the search result data (step S520), and then displays it on the display unit of the user terminal 100 through the web server module 228 (step S514).
[75] As the result of step S516, if the advertising conditions indicate no advertisements, the adaptive location ad server 220 creates a result page by only using the search result data and then displays it on the display unit of the user terminal 100 through the web server module 228 (step S514).
[76] At step S514, location-based advertisements or general advertisements are displayed on an advertising field 608 of a search page 600 and the advertisements displayed on the advertising field 608 may be changed at predetermined time intervals. For example, the advertisements can be displayed by scrolling or a number of location-based advertisements can be sequentially displayed.
[77] If the advertising field 608 of the search page 600 is selected, a detailed menu 610 for the advertisement shown in the advertising field 608 is displayed to provide many auxiliary functions. The auxiliary functions may include location information, a phone number, coupon and discount information, mail address, service information, a keyword or user evaluation information of the advertisement and each auxiliary function is linked to a special key for immediate execution.
[78] Herein, the adaptive local ad server 220 creates the general advertising list by extracting tag information and tag links from the search result data, i.e. the search result site by using the tag processing module 226 and then applying them to advertisement ranking decision.
[79] On the other hand, if the general advertising list is for video advertisements, the adaptive location ad server 220 extracts metadata included in each frame of each video advertisement through the video ad server module 225. If the extracted metadata contains tag information, tag links are extracted by using the tag processing module 226 and applied to ranking the advertisements to thereby create the general advertising list.
[80] Further, if the application program 310 is running on the user terminal 100, the advertisements listed in the location-based advertising list are overlaid on the screen by the ad control unit 330 of the user terminal 100. Otherwise, the advertisements are classified into categories and a menu for each category is displayed on the screen of the user terminal 100.
[81] Figs 7 and 8 show examples of the location-based advertisement which is provided by being overlaid on various environments such as TV broadcasting, wallpaper and the like. That is, representative advertising groups 700 can be easily displayed on the left or right side of the screen. If one of the representative advertising groups 700 is selected or one of them is designated by the cursor, an interface to display or select the corresponding location-based advertisements is provided.
[82] Further, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, several items of a certain category can be displayed on the upper or lower portion of the screen of the user terminal 100. If one of the items is selected or the cursor is positioned on one of the items, a location-based advertisement of the selected item or of the item designated by the cursor is displayed on a certain part of the screen.
[83] The embodiments as described above may be implemented in a server to which a location information receiving device can be attached or in a general computing system used as a client. The embodiments may also be implemented in various environments, e.g., in a mobile communication terminal based on a wireless communication network such as CDMAAVCDMA, in a home network terminal based on a wireline network or an information appliance with web browser software such as digital TV.
[84] While the invention has been shown and described with respect to the embodiments, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
