Abstract

An optical element (50) includes a liquid lens (61) provided with a first liquid (62), a second liquid (63) different from the first liquid (62), and a container (52) in which the first and second liquids are confined, wherein a shape (64) of the boundary surface defined between the first and second liquids (62) and (63) can be changed by varying a voltage applied to the inside of the container (52); and a heat insulating member (vacuum layer) to insulate the inside of the container (52) from the outside. In the optical element, preferably, one of the first and second liquids (62) and (63) possesses conductivity while the other possesses insulation. In the optical element, preferably, the physical quantity is a voltage. In the optical element, preferably, when the area of the contact surface in contact with either the first or second liquid and the area of portions composing the insulation member of the contact surface be SL and SI, respectively, a condition of an equation SI/SL>0.30 is satisfied.
