Abstract

Disclosed is a near infrared light-emitting phosphor nanoparticle having an average particle diameter of 2-50 nm, which emits a near infrared light having a wavelength within the range of 700-2000 nm when excited by a near infrared light having a wavelength within the range of 700-900 nm. This near infrared light-emitting phosphor nanoparticle is characterized by being represented by the general formula (1) below, and has high luminous intensity. This near infrared light-emitting phosphor nanoparticle is suitable for an agent for labeling biological substances. Also disclosed are a method for producing such a infrared light-emitting phosphor nanoparticle, and an agent for labeling biological substances using such a infrared light-emitting phosphor nanoparticle. General formula (1): (Y)a(Lu)b(La)c(Nd)x(Yb)y(Pr)m(Tb)nPO4 (In the formula, a + b + c = 1 - x - y - m - n, 0 < x + y + m + n < 1, 0 ≤ a < 1, 0 ≤ b < 1, 0 ≤ c < 1, 0 ≤ m ≤ 0.1, 0 ≤ n ≤ 0.1, 0 < a + b + c < 1 and 0 < x + y < 1.)
