Description
"DEVICES AGAINST THEFT OF CONSUMER FUEL FROM VEHICULAR TANKS"
The present patent of invention refers to improvements introduced into a device against theft of consumer fuel, such as diesel oil, gasoline or ethanol from tanks of trucks and other vehicles, through a previously built and assembled kit in the existing or new tank or through the construction and installation of a complementary fuel filler with packing, installation of a special lodging for protection of the vent, fuel return line and fuel level sensor or through complementary fuel filler with chicane, and a device to reduce the internal diameter of the fuel filler with an effective sensor for capacitance measurement, bringing as advantages the protection of the fuel tanks of vehicles, especially trucks, regarding to fuel theft, the tracking of the usage of the fuel filler without changing the tank's capacity or its original assembly, with low adaptation cost and allowing normal fuel supply.
As it is well known in the technical branch of manufacturing fuel tanks for trucks and other vehicles, and especially in the cargo transport, nowadays there are the following antitheft protection devices: a) Fuel filler cap with conventional key, which is vulnerable to the fuel theft, as the key stays in the hands of the driver for the tank supply; b) Fuel tank with bigger capacity, in order to avoid supplying during the route and the key of the fuel filler cap remaining with the company, presenting limitations in autonomy, increases the fuel weight and consequently decreases the weight of the carried cargo, vulnerability to the theft of fuel through the fuel level sensor or by the tank exhaustion plug;
c) Plate of resistant metal welded in the interior part of the tank, just after the end of the fuel filler neck which allows the fuel input but avoids the use of hoses for fuel drainage, presenting the inconvenience of not offering total protection against thefts, because still allows the access to the fuel by the fuel filler when the truck is inclined in a ramp. Furthermore, the plate can be forced to bend with a chisel or another similar element to make the theft of the fuel easier. Its weak point is that in order to verify whether there was the theft or not, it is necessary to leave the cover of the tank of each vehicle and to inspect the state of the plate that is forcibly put back in the place; and d) Instead of the cited plate, a sieve with an opening of at least 6 mm is inserted, being this opening needed to avoid foaming, with the disadvantages of letting pass 5 mm diameter hoses; some meshes of the sieve can be torn and after the theft are reallocated in the original pattern which complicates the inspections, also being necessary to leave the cap and to inspect each tank.
The fuel theft by the vent, fuel return line and fuel level sensor of the current tanks occurs by the injection of pressurized air into the tank forcing the output of the fuel by the supplying fuel filler or by the fuel level sensor housing; a great number of vehicles, mostly trucks, have two tanks of fuel interconnected by a transfer pipe that communicate with each other by way of a compensating line on the bases of the principle of communicating vessels, this keeps the same fuel level in the tanks and avoids the necessity of two fuel pumps in the system, working with only one. One of the most common forms of fuel theft consists in sealing the vent of one of the tanks, preventing air drainage, closing the fuel filler of the same tank with a cloth moist with water or even fuel, the fuel filler of the other tank then is open, and a hose with compressed air - by
instance, a hose of pressure gauge for tires - is inserted through the cloth and thus by difference of pressure and with the vent closed, the fuel of the tank that is being pressurized migrates to the other tank by the transfer piping, flowing over the open fuel filler.
Other inconvenience of the current tanks concerning fuel theft through the fuel level sensor is that seals and "U"- shaped protection plates do not prevent the access to the fuel tube clamps in the fuel level sensor and allow the body of the fuel level sensor to be loosened from the tank.
Nowadays, there isn't a specific sensor for fuel filler of consumer fuel tank, because the fuel fillers have very large internal diameters - ranging from 85 mm to 150 mm - which turns the creation of an area for the accommodation of an effective sensor which connects to a monitoring and/or tracking system impossible.
"DEVICES AGAINST THEFT OF
CONSUMER FUEL FROM VEHICULAR TANKS", object of the present patent of invention, was developed to overcome the disadvantages and limitations of the devices against theft of fuel from tanks of trucks or other vehicles, existing nowadays or new ones, because it allows the revealing of fuel theft due to the total protection of the apparent pieces and showing of breakings, through a kit previously built and assembled in the existing or new tanks or through the building and installation of a complementary fuel filler with packing, installation of a special lodging for protection of vent, fuel return line and fuel level sensor or through a complementary fuel filler with chicane, and a sensor for monitoring the usage of the fuel filler in case of an insertion of any object into the tank's interior or even in case of a fuel supply, bringing as advantages the protection of fuel tanks, especially trucks, regards to fuel theft, the tracking
of the usage of the fuel filler, without doing alterations in the tank's capacity or in its original assembly, with low cost of adaptations and allowing normal fuel supply.
The kit's fuel filler protector, the first option of fuel filler protector that utilizes packing and the second option of fuel filler protector that uses an chicane according to the present patent, assembled in the fuel filler of the tank, when being forced - as they do it in the case of having the protection plate or sieve - offers very high resistance, not being removed without violation, deforming the tank fuel fillers and becoming a revealing element of the theft attempt. Besides, as its main characteristics is its position above of the fuel level after assembled, even if the tank is full, and lower considerably the internal diameter of the supplying fuel filler, allowing just the passage of the filler nozzle, having as characteristic a fuel diffusion system and the liberation of the air outside of the tank, at the moment of the supply, through rips or holes in the protector's internal part, preventing the theft by inclination of the vehicle, since the same would need to be inclined more than 45 degrees.
The kit's protector of vent, of fuel return line and of fuel level sensor from the present patent and the first option of vent protector from the present patent were developed to overcome the disadvantages and limitations of seals and "IT'-shaped protection plate, once they do not prevent the access to the hose's fixation handles to the fuel level sensor, neither that the body of the fuel level sensor be loosened of the tank, allowing the effective protection of the fuel level sensor, once that is encapsulated and not allows the access to the fixation of the hoses close to the fuel level sensor and also prevents that the fuel level sensor be removed or loosened. Besides that, they avoid injection of compressed air into the
tank forcing the output of diesel oil through the supply fuel filler or through the tank's fuel level sensor housing.

the fuel filler of the tank in which it will be fixed, as showed in the figures 25 and 26; to prevent fuel leak and to give more sealing effect, the original fuel filler (B) of the tank (T) will be hampered by the gasket ring (AV); depending on the type of the fuel filler that the tank has, the assembling of the new fuel filler could double the height between foot of the fuel filler of the tank (B).
The sensor of the present patent operates as a monitoring sensor of the fuel filler tank, connected to systems for satellite tracking of vehicles, or integrated with the electronic system installed in the vehicle. The importance of such monitoring is to inhibit unauthorized removals of fuel from the consumer tank, also to monitor the fuel supplies of the vehicle, providing the identification of the place and time where the supply of consumer fuel happened. It permits to know when any product is inserted into the fuel filler, for example, the filler nozzle, that can only be inserted through the guide tube (1-C-l) of the protector (1) or through the device for reducing the diameter (DR). The sensor, object of this patent application, operates as capacitance gauge, which through an electronic circuit, monitors the dielectric region existing inside the contact tube.
According to figures 27 to 29, the sensor for capacitance measurement (SMC) is constituted by a reducing and receiver tube (TRR) with ring (AF) or guide tube (1-C-l) of the protector (1), assembled in a conventional fuel filler, containing internally and concentrically a contact tube (TC) endowed with an external diameter very close to the internal diameter of the reducing and receiver tube (TRR) or of the guide tube (1-C-l) of the protector (1), endowed with small thickness, enough to make possible the creation of a dielectric region (RD) in its interior and in the device for reducing the diameter (DR), endowed or not with a tear in the side (RL), and endowed with a protective surface with an
insulator material, which can be a glue layer of extremely high mechanical resistance and of high resistance against the attack of chemical products used to fix the contact tube (TC) in the reducing and receiver tube (TRR) or in the guide tube (1-C-l); the sensor for capacitance measurement (SMC) is also constituted by a contact wiring (FTC) connected to the contact tube (TC), a contact wiring (FDR) connected to the reducing and receiver tube (TRR) or to the guide tube (1-C-l), and a device for capacitance variation measurement (MVC) endowed with an electronic circuit which is conected at the contact tube (TC) through the contact wiring (FTC) and is conected at the reducing and receiving tube (TRR) or from the guide tube (1-C-l) of the protector (1) through the contact wiring (FDR); the device for capacitance variation measurement (MVC); receive electrical current of 12V to 32V and send positive signal of 12V; and if a variation in the electrodes is detected, the monitoring system stops and calibrates a trigger placed inside the circuit.
The contact tube (TC) can be made of aluminum, carbon steel, or other conductive material, has its dimension calculated in such way that can creates the necessary area of capacitance to a perfect working, according to the internal diameter of the reducing and receiver tube (TRR) or to the guide tube (1-C-l) of the protector (1) where it will be installed, to the thickness of the protective surface of the contact tube (TC), and to the working tension. The internal diameter of contact tube (TC) is such that will make possible only the passage of the most common filler nozzles, whose external diameter is at most of 30mm. When the contact tube (TC) is assembled in the reducing and receiver tube (TRR) or in the guide tube (1-C-l) of the protector (1), this whole set will be the sensor for capacitance measurement (SMC). The sensor for capacitance measurement (SMC) operates through a small electronic system, whose installation will be in the interior of the instrumental panel of the vehicle. The electronic circuit
calibrates a trigger placed inside the circuit, whose function is to adjust the sensibility of the sensor for capacitance measurement (SMC) in such way that the electronic circuit does not emit a signal to the tracking system as soon as a variation in the dielectric field happens, on the contrary, it will emit the signal only when that variation in the dielectric region (RD) - which happens when any object is introduced into the tank - remains for a determined period of time - the time will be specified in the calibration of the electronic circuit - for example, after 10 seconds. The specification of the period of time is important to avoid that the shaking of the fuel inside the tank caused by the movement of the vehicle, activates the sensor every time that the fuel pass through the dielectric region (RD), which is placed inside the contact tube (TC). On the other hand, the diameter reduction caused by the reducing and receiver tube (TRR) or by the guide tube (1-C-l) of the protector (1) also decreases substantially the possibilities of the fuel to reach the dielectric region (RD).
The device for reducing the diameter (DR) can be made in different sizes especially concerning the fixing ring (AF) to satisfy the various fuel fillers models available today.
