Abstract

 非磁性基板(12)上に、磁気ヘッドからの磁束を再びヘッドに還流させる磁路を形成する軟磁性裏打ち層(16)、結晶配向制御層としての非磁性中間層(22)、磁性層としての記録層(24)を順次有し、磁化容易軸の方向が記録層(249の膜面に垂直であり、記録層(24)は磁壁をトラップすると共にイオンの照射によって形成された磁壁ピン止めサイト(25)を有し、磁壁ピン止めサイト(25)によって決められる領域を記録ビットとする垂直磁気記録媒体(10)において、記録層(24)は垂直磁気記録媒体(10)の積層方向に垂直な平滑面(24a、24b)を磁壁ピン止めサイト(25)が形成された部分に有し、非磁性中間層(22)と軟磁性裏打ち層(16)との間に、イオンが非磁性中間層(22)から軟磁性裏打ち層(16)に注入されることを防止するイオンガード層(18)を有することを特徴とする垂直磁気記録媒体(10)を提供する。
