Abstract
A soft magnetic lining layer (16) on which a magnetic path for circulating the magnetic flux from a magnetic head back to the head is formed, a nonmagnetic intermediate layer (22) as a crystal orientation control layer, and a recording layer (24) as a magnetic layer are formed sequentially on a nonmagnetic substrate (12) wherein the easy direction of magnetization is perpendicular to the film surface of the recording layer (24), the recording layer (24) traps a domain wall and has a domain wall pin stop site (25) formed by irradiating ions, and a region defined by the domain wall pin stop site (25) serves as a recording bit. In such a vertical magnetic recording medium (10), the recording layer (24) has smooth surfaces (24a, 24b) perpendicular to the laminating direction of the vertical magnetic recording medium (10) in a part where the domain wall pin stop site (25) is formed, and an ion guard layer (18) for preventing ion implantation from the nonmagnetic intermediate layer (22) to the soft magnetic lining layer (16) is provided between the nonmagnetic intermediate layer (22) and the soft magnetic lining layer (16).
