Definitions
- the present invention relates to a hair regro th method and a hair growth composition.
- Alopecia areata that causes sudden loss of hair at one or several regions of the scalp is known to occur when hair follicles are attacked by lymphocytes due to a variation in the immune system so that their growth is suddenly stopped.
- DHT dihydrotestosteron
- leucocytes recognize the hair follicle as a foreign protein to be removed while they produce self-antibodies to attack the hair follicle.
- a new method for regrowing hair which is based on such research results and overcomes problems occurring the prior art, is proposed, and . a series of tests to prove the effects of the inventive method are performed.
- a hair-loss phenomenon was considered in view of immune diseases.
- hair follicles in general hair loss patients and also in persons with a slippery baldhead as a result of a significant reduction in hair follicle size are activated by a method exhibiting an autoimmune neutralization effect caused by immune-boosting action.
- the activated hair follicles are supplied with sugars as nutrients to revive the hair follicles.
- Sebum which is secreted by the active cell division action of the revived hair follicles, is prevented from being accumulated on the scalp in the form of lipid peroxide, by use of an antioxidant.
- the present invention has reliable effects on hair loss prevention and hair growth.
- the present invention is directed to a method and composition for regrowing hair in the telogen phase. More particularly, the present invention provides a method for regrowing hair by the telogen phase-breaking action of converting the telogen phase to anagen phase of the hair cycle, the method being characterized by activating a hair follicle shrunk by a hair-loss phenomenon, using the immunity-boosting action of ⁇ -glucan, supplying sugars as nutrients to the activated hair follicle to revive the hair follicle, and preventing sebum, which is secreted by the active cell division action of the revived hair follicle, from being accumulated on the scalp in the form of lipid peroxide, by use of an antioxidant. Also, the present invention provides a hair growth composition, which has reliable effects on hair loss prevention and hair growth and does not cause side effects on the human body.
- Alopecia that causes falling out of hair from the scalp occurs by a variety of factors, including internal factors, such as genetic constitution and the action of male hormones', and external factors, such as mental stress in daily life, and the accumulation of lipid peroxide on the scalp. Such factors are known to be involved in alopecia in a complicated manner. Recently, in addition to male pattern alopecia and female pattern alopecia, falling out of hair in the youth shows a tendency to increase gradually. To improve such a hair-loss phenomenon, many kinds of hair growth agents or hair growth promoters are being marketed.
- vasodilators such as capronium chloride, minoxidil and extracts from various plants, which serve to circulate sufficient, blood through the scalp
- female hormones such as estrogen, estradiol and progesterone, which are attached to hair pailla to inhibit the action of male hormones that ' cause falling out of hair
- agents for inhibiting the activity of male hormones such as pentadecanic acid and finasteride.
- drugs approved by US FDA for use as agents for treating alopecia include minoxidil for external application and propecia for oral use, in which the minoxidil is used as an agent for preventing hair loss by its vasodilation action, and the propecia is based on finasteride and used as an agent for treating alopecia by the action of inhibiting the activity of male hormones.
- the hair growth agents and hair growth promoters as described above were somewhat effective in preventing hair loss, but had an insufficient effect on hair growth. In other words, since such preparations are effective only in a region where the hair root is activated, they have an- excellent effect on hair loss prevention.
- their effect on the regrowth (i.e., growth) of hair in the telogen phase is insufficient, they are known to have no effect on a bald head where hair loss was already progressed to shrink a hair follicle.
- telo.gen phase is long and the anagen phase is short. It has been believed that, when the telogen phase became long, the hair follicle was shrunk to make hair regrowth almost impossible. Solving this problem is an object of the present invention. Most of preparations that are currently commercially available will have only the effect of preventing falling out of hair in the telogen phase.
- a main object of the present invention is to prevent hair loss and make hair regrowth possible, by a method of reviving a hair follicle shrunk by the long telogen phase to -convert the telogen phase to anagen phase of the hair cycle.
- Another main object of the present invention is to develop a hair growth composition which dose not cause side effects on the human body.
- FIG. 1 shows hair regrowth factors, which are used in the method of the present invention.
- a hair follicle in the telogen phase of- the hair cycle is activated by the autoimmune neutralization effect of a biological response modifier (BRM) .
- BRM biological response modifier
- the activated hair follicle is supplied with sugars as nutrients to revive the hair follicle.
- serum which is secreted by the active cell division action of the revived hair follicle, is prevented from being accumulated on the scalp in the form of lipid "peroxide.
- the telogen phase is converted to the anagen phase while regrowing the hair.
- a method of treating intractable diseases, such as cancer, by activating immune functions is generally called “immune therapy” in which the following substances are used.
- a biological response modifier (BRM) , which is a natural substance other than a synthesized chemical substance and serves to increase immunity, stimulates the immune system to change the biological reaction of a host, to show a variety of physiological effects.
- BRM is used to treat various cancer patients in combination with chemical anticancer agents.
- Known examples of BRM include krestin, lentinan, ⁇ - glucan and active hexose correlated compounds (AHCC) , which are extracts from mushrooms.
- AHCC active hexose correlated compounds
- AHCC is. administered orally to various cancer patients to treat cancers by increasing immunity, and also does not cause side effects. Furthermore, it is characterized by alleviating side effects, such as emesis, alopecia and pains, so that it is used in immunity-boosting complementary therapy for various cancer patients.
- the hair regrowth method according to the present invention relates to a method for regrowing hair on bald heads where hair loss was significantly progressed.
- hair follicle cells in the long telogen phase are considered as having similar properties to the normal cells of cancer patients, which have weakened immune functions due to cancer cells.
- BRM having immunity-boosting action is applied directly on the scalp so that the hair follicle is activated by an autoimmune neutralization effect.
- ⁇ -glucan among BRMs was selected as a substance promoting the activity of the immune system, and clinically tested on patients with general alopecia and on slippery bald heads where hair follicles were shrunk.
- the test results showed the BRM substance had a hair loss prevention effect and also a hair regrowth effect even on the bald heads, which had not been expected previously.
- a hair growth composition according to the present invention contains: (a) 0.01-20% by weight of ⁇ -glucan acting to activate hair follicles by immune-boosting action; (b) 0.1-20% by weight of at least one selected from monosaccharides, such as glucose, xylose, mannose, and arabinose, and disaccharides, such as maltose, sucrose, cellobiose, .
