Abstract

A gene encoding a novel nervous system-specific sulfotransferase, SULTn, has been identified by searching an expressed sequence tag database for sulfotransferase specifically expressed in the brain. SULTn is a polypeptide of 33,085 MW that structurally resembles cytosolic sulfotransferases. SULTn specifically binds to adenosine 3',5'-diphosphate-agarose. The human SULTn gene is located on chromosome 22 (22q13), has 7 coding exons, and spans over 47 kb.Unlike all known cytosolic sulfotransferases, which are highly expressed in liver, SULTn transcripts (2.4 kb) were detected only in the adult brain. SULTn is expressed early in rat development in the central, peripheral and enteric nervous systems. SULTn is widely expressed in the adult nervous system, including the Purkinje cell layer of the cerebellum, apparently in neurons.
