Abstract

A system for providing video-on-demand service, broadband Internet access and other broadband services over T-carrier systems including a pull multiplexer cherrypicker (10) at the headend is disclosed. The pull multiplexer (10) receives upstream requests and cull out MPEG or other compressed video packets, IP packets and other data packet types to satisfy the requests (12) or to send pushed programming downstream (26). The downstream can be DSL or HFC. Each customer has a cable modem, DSL modem or a gateway (20, 30) which interfaces multiple signal sources to a LAN (9) to which settop decoders (18), digital phones (108), personal computers (110), digital FAX machines (452), video cameras, digital VCRs etc. can be attached. Each gateway can couple the LAN (11) to a DSL line (462) or HFC through a cable modem or a satellite dish (456) through a satellite transceiver. A PSTN (460) and conventional TV antenna (458) interface is also provided.
