Abstract

A packaging machine, preferably a carousel packaging machine, is provided for packaging a product into bags. The machine has means for jostling the bags after filling, as they travel along a path, so as to impart to the product within the bag agitation causing the product to settle towards the bottom of the bag. The machine further comprises a guide structure adjacent bag-receiving locations, for directing any product which would otherwise fall between bags into a bag. In addition, there is a flushing means for introducing into each open-topped bag a flow of flushing gas which travels towards the closed end of the bag along one major internal surface thereof and out of the bag along an opposed major surface thereof, thereby displacing air from within the bag.
