Abstract

Appareil et procédé servant à réduire les polluants dans un courant gazeux qui contient un gaz provenant de l'oxydation d'un carburant, par exemple les gaz d'échappement d'un moteur (11) à combustion. Des radicaux sont produits par décharge (30, 40) par effet couronne dans le courant (18) gazeux du moteur à combustion, soit dans le courant gazeux de précombustion, soit dans l'eau des gaz d'échappement. Lorsque les radicaux sont produits à partir du courant gazeux d'échappement, ils peuvent être produits par une décharge (30, 40) par effet couronne directement dans le courant (18) d'échappement menant vers le convertisseur (13) catalytique ou à l'intérieur de celui-ci, ou bien une partie du courant d'échappement peut être déviée vers un générateur (23) éloigné de radicaux par décharge par effet couronne. La décharge (30, 40) par effet de couronne dans le générateur (23) produit des radicaux dans les gaz d'échappement déviés, et les gaz d'échappement contenant des radicaux sont alors dirigés vers le courant (18) gazeux d'échappement en un point en amont de la sortie du convertisseur (13) catalytique.
