Abstract

A security document of value (2) comprising a see through and writable hologram or diffractive grating (10) as an anticounterfeit measure. The hologram (10) may extend over all or a portion of the document (2) such as the signature entry area (16) and other data areas (20) of the document (2). The hologram (10) is made receptable to ink by a coating of ink receptive material (26) or by known corona discharge treatment. Writing (18) or impact printing over the ink compatible surface (26) of the hologram (10) partially occults the hologram (10) underneath such writing (18) and may cause the embossed surface (22, 24) of the hologram (10) to become etched so that even if the ink is removed, a writing trace would remain, thus providing an additional security feature. The hologram (10) may be applied with tamper proof pressure sensitive patterned adhesive, hot stamp, or embossing. The hologram (10) permits incorporation of many other anticounterfeit features. Optionally the hologram (10) may be covered with a protective laminate (28) after the writing (18) or impact printing has been applied.
