Abstract
According to the presence invention there is provided a cleaning implement comprising a broom-like brush (10) having a sponge-like mop (12) pivotally mounted behind the broom-like brush (10) and mechanism (17) which can be operated to pivot the mop (12) to press it against the brush (10) for the purpose of expressing water therefrom.
Description
Cleaning Implement
This invention concerns a cleaning implement in the form of a scrub- brush mop, and more particularly one incorporating both a broom-like brush and a sponge mop.
Sponge mops are known which can be actuated to fold in half, the two halves being pressed together to express water therefrom.
According to the present invention there is provided a cleaning implement comprising a broom-like brush having a sponge-like mop pivotally mounted behind the broom-like brush, and mechanism which can be operated to pivot the mop to press it against the brush for the purpose of expressing water therefrom.
Since the water is discharged through the bristles of the brush, the brush is cleaned each time the mechanism is operated.
The implement may also include a squeegee in front of the broom brush.
The squeegee and broom brush may be comprised by an integral moulding of rubber material.
The mechanism may comprise a sleeve slidable on the broom handle and connected by a pivoted link with the mop.
The mechanism may comprise a manually operable lever connected to the mop.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which shows, by way of example only, a side view of one form of cleaning implement embodying same.
Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that the implement comprises a brush 10 formed as an integral moulding of rubber with a squeegee blade 11 protruding forwardly therefrom. At the rear of the brush 10 is a mop 12 comprised by a pad 13 of plastics foam detachably mounted (for replacement purposes) beneath a rigid plate 14 which is pivotally connected to the rear of the brush 10. The plate 14 has a depending flange 14a at its rear edge.
A broom handle 15 engages a socket 16 to extend upwardly from the brush 10 in known manner.
A sleeve 17 is slidable along the handle 15 and carries a pivotally connected link 18 whose end remote from the sleeve 17 is pivotally connected with the plate 14.
In use the implement may be used as required as a squeegee, a brush or a mop.
When it is desired to express water from the pad 13 the sleeve 17 is pulled upwardly along the handle 15 to cause the plate 14 to swing downwardly and compress
the pad 13 against the bristles of the brush 10. The flange 14a ensures that the pad as adequately squeezed. The expressed water is expelled through the spaces between the bristles thereby washing and cleaning the brush 10.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
Thus, for example, instead of the parts 17 and 18 a simple manually operable lever may extend from the top of the plate 14 as indicated at 20 in chain-dotted lines.
Claims
1. A cleaning implement comprising a broom-like brush having a sponge-like mop pivotally mounted behind the broom-like brush, and mechanism which can be operated to pivot the mop to press it against the brush for the purpose of expressing water therefrom.
2. An implement according to Claim 1 including a squeegee in front of the broom brush.
3. An implement according to Claim 2 wherein the squeegee and broom brush are comprised by an integral moulding of rubber material.
4. An implement according to any preceding claim wherein the mechanism comprises a sleeve slidable on the broom handle and connected by a pivoted link with the mop.
5. An implement according to any one of the claims 1-3 wherein the mechanism comprises a manually operable lever connected to the mop.
6. An implement according to any preceding claim wherein a flange depends from the upper rear edge of the mop.
