Definitions
- the present invention relates to a plate ceiling comprising at least one corner delimited by two adjoining ceiling edges, at which corner a curved corner plate having two curved edges, each adjoining a curved insulating ceiling plate, and two rectlinear adjoining edges, is mounted.
- a prior art ceiling of the above type comprises a plane ceiling section consisting of closely spaced rectangular or quadratic insulating plates and a number of curved insulating plates mounted circumferentiall around the plane ceiling section.
- the curved insulating plates may be mounted in such a manner that they extend upwards from the edge of the plane ceiling section, thereby forming a ceiling having a lowered plane section.
- the curved insulating plates may also be mounted in such a manner that the plane section of the ceiling is located higher than the edges of the ceiling.
- the curved insulating plates may be composed of a lower smooth and flexible supporting layer and an upper insulation layer, which is also flexible and consists e.g. of mineral fibres.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a plate ceiling of the type mentioned above, wherein the corner plate is constructed in a manner which allows it to be shaped at the construction site and from the same material as the curved plates.
- a corner plate comprising a lower smooth and flexible supporting layer and an upper flexible insulation layer secured thereto, wherein parallel grooves are formed in the insulation layer, the grooves extending substantially perpendicularly to the bisector of the angle between the two adjoining rectlinear edges.
- the invention will be described in further details below in relation to a ceiling plate wherein the said corner plate, being quadratic in ground plane, is mounted in an inside corner, i.e. on the inside of two adjoining walls.
- the corner plate can also be mounted on the outside of a corner formed by two adjoining walls, and that the corner plate needs not be quadratic but may e.g. be polygonal, such as rectangular, in ground plane.
- a corner plate element which has a rectangular corner from which two straight edges extend, the edges having a length corresponding to the distance from the wall corner to the edge of the adjacent curved insulating plate, and wherein the two other edges have such a shape that when the piate-shaped element is imparted the desired curvature they will closely adjoin the edges of the adjacent curved plates and form an even transition thereto. Consequently, the two latter edges are not rectlinear when the plate is in an unfolded state.
- the shape of the two sides of the plate is determined by the rising height of the corner plate and the curvature of the edge of the adjacent plate as well as the length of this edge.
- the said curvature can be determined by calculation, but in practice such calculation is not expected to be carried out at the construction site. Instead it is contemplated to accompany the corner plate with suitable patterns, e.g. of paper, fixing the outline of the corner plates in a plane state corresponding to the corner plates having given curvatures. Thus, such patterns can be used at the constructions site for cutting out suitable plate-shaped pieces from the corner plate elements.
- suitable patterns e.g. of paper
- the curved plates adjoining a corner plate may have different curvatures, but for architectural reasons it is normally preferred that the adjoining plates have the same curvature.
- the grooves in the insulation layers extend substantially perpendicularly to the bisector of the angle formed by the two straight edges of the corner plates, i.e. the angle at the edge of the ceiling in an inside corner and the angle at the surface of the ceiling in an outside corner. Consequently, the corner plate can readily be imparted a curvature in a plane perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction of the grooves, and in such a manner that the transition to the adjacent curved plates becomes even and the lower surface of the plate becomes smooth.
- the supporting layer of the corner plate is expediently formed of a fibre layer, e.g. a woven or non-woven fibre material of organic or inorganic fibres. Due to its fire resistance an inorganic fibre layer, such as a non-woven glass fibre material, is ordinarily preferred. By way of example such a non-woven glass fibre material may have a gram weight of 120 g/m 2 .
- the supporting layer is secured to the insulation layer, e.g. by means of a binder.
- suitable binders are binders based on poly inyl acetate.
- the insulation layer may consist of an organic material, e.g. foam plastic, or an inorganic material, e.g. mineral fibres. Insulation layers of inorganic materials, such as mineral fibres, are preferred due to their fire resistance. Examples of suitable mineral fibres are rock woll fibres, glass fibres and slag fibres.
- an insulation layer of mineral fibres When using an insulation layer of mineral fibres, expediently it has a density of between 15 and 200 kg/m 3 and a thickness of from 10 to 100 mm.
- the grooves extend from one plate edge to another, but depending on the desired curvature the entire insulation layer does not necessarily have to be provided with grooves.
- the mutual spacing between the grooves is from 10 to 100 mm.
- the grooves have a depth of from 50 to 95% of the thickness of the insulation layer.
- the cross sectional shape of the grooves may vary, e.g. from a thin slit shape to a V-shape.
- the lower surface of the corner plates is preferably provided with a surface coating, e.g. in the form of a paint coating.
- the upper surface of the corner plates is preferably coated with a thin fibre layer.
- a fibre layer e.g. a non-woven glass fibre material which particularly is used in large corner plates, increases the tactile comfort of the upper surfaces of the corner plates and prevents the release of loose fibres from the mineral fibre layer.
- the thin fibre layer will ordinarily be cut into a pattern corresponding to the underlying groove pattern.
- the plate " ceiling according to the invention comprises a plane section
- it is preferably composed of identical quadratic plates and the curved plates preferably have a length/width corresponding to the edge length of the quadratic plates.
- the plate ceiling is preferably supported by rails suspended in floors above, e.g. by means of metal wires. Rails having different shapes, e.g. T or L shaped rails, may be used. When using suspension rails, a rail having a shape corresponding to the curvature of the edges of the adjacent plates is used in the zone between a corner plate and an adjacent curved insulating plate.
- the S shape is an aestetically attractive one, but a circular arch shape and a combination of plane and circular arch shaped plates can also be practical and aestetic.
- Fig. 1 shows a plate-shaped element for forming a corner plate of a ceiling according to the invention
- Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view along the line II-II through the plate-shaped element of Fig. 1,
- Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper side of a lowered ceiling according to the invention.
- Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lower side of another ceiling according to the invention.
- the plate-shaped element shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a lower supporting layer 1 and an upper insulation layer 2 wherein grooves 3 extending diagonally are formed. Consequently, the plate can be imparted a desired curvature in a plane perpendicular to the grooves 3.
- Fig. 3 shows a ceiling adjoining two walls 10 and 11 and consisting of a plane section formed from quadratic insulating plates 12 and a curved edge section consisting of curved plates 13 and corner plates 14 (only one plate is shown).
- the quadratic insulating plates 12 are supported on T shaped strips 15 suspended in metal wires 16 secured to the ceiling.
- the curved plates 13 have an S shape, their upper edges being supported on L shaped strips 17 secured to the walls 10 and 11 and their lower edges being supported on the T shaped strips 15. T shaped strips (not shown) having the same curvature as the plates 13 are mounted between the adjacent curved plates 13.
- the upper edges of the corner plates 14 are also supported on the L shaped strips 17 and the two other edges are supported on T shaped strips (not shown) having the same curvature as the edges of the adjacent plates 13.
- the ceiling shown in Fig. 4 corresponds to the one shown in Fig. 3 but differs in that the plane section of the ceiling is located higher than the lower edge of the surrounding circumference of curved plates. Hence, the same reference numerals are used in Fig. 4 as in Fig. 3.
- Fig. 4 has both an inside corner and an outside corner.
