UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM C. OODMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RI'IODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE GORIIAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, FORKS, OR SIMILAR ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 32,915, dated July 10, 1900.
Application filed May 15 1900. Serial No. 16,831. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM C. CODMAN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Handle of a Spoon, Fork, or Similar Article, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 is a View of the front of the handle, showing the handle seen red to the bowl of a spoon, a fork beingindicated in broken lines. Fig. 2 is a view of the rear or reverse side of the handle.
The leading feature of my design consists in the outline and marginal scroll ornaments. tions which divide the length of the handle into five parts, each of which is ornamented with distinctive classic designs of the Roman period.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the bowl of the spoon or other article to which the handle is attached, and 2 the base of the handle. On the front of the handle the curved inclined margin of the base is ornamented with raised scrolls springing from the foliated scrolled terminal on the front of the handle and inclosing a panel ornamented with a fruit and flower design. On the rear of the handle the marginal scrolls terminate in scrolled cande" labra andfoliated ornaments, covering the panel between the marginal scrolls and extending over the bowl. The stem 3 of the handle curves slightly inward to the middle of its length and then outward. On the front side the margins of the stem are ornamented with raised beads, terminating in scrolls. Overlying scalloped scales ornament the space of the stem between the marginal scrolls. The escutcheon 4 has along the margins reverse curved beads, terminating in scrolls, and between the reverse scrolls an oval convex shield. Foliated overlapping scrolls spring from the reverse scrolls of the escutcheon, curving outward and then suddenly inward along the margin of the division 5, inclosing the representation of a conventional Greek mask, from which extend toward the opposite margins of the handle two curved foliated scrolls, between which a foliated crest extends into the panel of the blade 6 of the handle. The blade of the handle at its junction with the scrolls of the division 5 is of less width than the part imme- V diately below. It curves gradually outward and then suddenly inward to the crest of handle. The margins are ornamented w. raised foliated scrolls. The crest has t" eagles heads pointing in opposite directio. and separated by a conventional honeysuckle ornament.
The rear side of the handle has the same marginalornamentationsas the front, withont the ornate details of the front of the handle. 6 In division 5 the rear of the handle has a fruit pendent ornament between the margi nal scrolls. The rear of the handle presents to the eye a lighter appearance than does the front, the space between the marginal scrolls 7 presenting a plain surface nearly the length of the handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by L tters Patent, 1s
The design for the handle of a spoon, fork or similar article herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
