UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. CODMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE GORHAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, FORKS, 0R SIMILAR ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 30,168, dated February 14, 1899.
Application filed January 9, 1899- Serial No. 701,672- Term' of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. CODMAN, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Handles of Spoons, Forks, or Similar Articles; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 is a view of the front or obverse side of the handle, showing my design. Fig. 2 is a. view of the reverse side of the same.
In both the figures the handle is shown attached to the bowl of a spoon, the tines of a fork being indicated in broken lines in Fig. 1.
The leading feature of my design consists in the ornamentation of the blade of the handle, in which from the central shell ornament at the upper end of the handle twofoliated scrolls extend in opposite directions along the upper margin and curve inward over a raised bead extending parallel with the margin to the ornament at the point of union of the blade with the stem of the handle.
In the drawings, A indicates the blade of the handle, B the stem of the handle, and C the bowl of the spoon or similar article to which the handle is attached.
The handle has the general outline of the class of handles known in the silversmiths art as the King pattern.
On the upper end of the handle the shell ornament 1 represents on the obverse side the appearance of the inner concaved side of an escalloped shell, while on the reverse side of the handle the shell ornament 1 represents the outer convexed appearance of the shell. From each side of the shell ornament extend along the upper margin of the handle the 0 scrolls 2 2, from which, curving inward, extend the foliated portions 3 and the terminal scrolls 4 4 over the blade and over the raised beads 5 5, which, extending from the narrow central portion of the shell ornament, con- 4 5 tinue parallel with the edges of the blade of the handle to the foliated scrolls 6 6, which extend upward and downward from the center of the blade A at the point where the said blade merges into the narrowing portion of the stem B. The ornament 7 between the foliated scrolls 6 6 represents the outer convexed appearance on the obverse side and the inner concaved appearance of the shell on the reverse side of the handle. The lower end of the handle, at the junction of the bowl, broadens suddenly and is ornamented on the obverse side of the handle with the honeysuckle ornament 8, inclosed in scrolls, while on the reverse side of the handle the foliated scrolls 6o 9 overlie the shell ornament 10, extending over the bowl 0.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for the handle of a spoon, fork, or similar article as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM C. CODMAN.
