To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN G. PArroN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Envelop and Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.

The invention disclosed herein consists of a novel construction of an envelop and advertising device which is especially adapted to be employed for mail order purposes and is constructed in a novel manner, whereby I am enabled to dispense with the ordinary fastening devices whichit is necessary to employ in devices of this character.

In a co-pending application, filed September 23, 1909, Serial No. 519,168, for a theater ticket envelop and advertising device, and allowed March 2, 1910, I have described and broadly claimed a novel construction wherein the envelop is formed from an integral blank of material and provided with an elongated flap adapted to receive a diagram of a theater, steamer, railroad car, foot ball field, time table, or any other advertising matter which is preferably located thereon in such a manner that when the device is n11- folded such diagram is readily visible. The construction disclosed in my present invention is also adapted to be employed for such purposes if desired, but it is especially designed to be used in conjunction with a mail order business, and while in some respects it is similar to my allowed application to which I have hereinbefore referred, I provide in addition thereto means on the inner face of the envelop which interlocks with the sectional tab of the envelop, whereby the accidental opening or unfolding of the device is prevented and the matter contained within the envelop is thereby prevented from accidental removal during transit.

It further consists of a novel construction of an envelop and advertising device wherein the envelop portion is provided with an elongated tab which is adapted to interlock with one or more apertures located in the inner side of the envelop.

It further consists of a novel construction of envelop and advertising device wherein an elongated tab is employed, preferably divided into sections of substantially the same length, such tab being provided with side extensions which are adapted to interlock when the tab is folded with one or more apertures in the envelop portion of the device.

It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings those embodiments thereof which are at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the precise construction herein set forth.

Figure 1 represents a sectional plan view of an envelop and advertising device embodying my invention, the tab portion thereof being shown in its unfolded condition. Referring to the drawings :In all of the embodiments of my invention I have devised a construction which can be made from an integral blank of material, so that it may he died or cut out at a single operation and so that all of the advertising or other matter may be placed thereon at a single operation.

Referring first to the embodiment seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, l designates a blank or strip of material of any desired character, the same in the present instance comprising an envelop formed by the portions 2 and 3,

the blank being preferably weakened as indicated at 1, whereby said sections maybe readily folded over upon each other, it being noted that the section 2 is provided with laterally extending side flaps 5, whereby the latter may be folded over and secured to the marginal edges of the envelop section 3 by means of any desired fastening device or material, such as for example, the usual adhesive material employed for this purpose. The inner side 3 of the envelop portion is provided with a slot (3 therethrough which terminates a desired distance from the edges of the envelop and is preferably the same width as the tab 7 of the envelop, which latter is divided into sections 8, 9 and 10 by weakening the paper, as is indicated at 11 and 12, it being noted that the section 8 is adapted to be readily folded by weakening the paper, as is indicated at 13, and it is to be noted that the tab sections 8, 9 and 10 are preferably of substantially uniform width, except that the section 8 in proximity to the envelop portion of the device is provided with an extension 14 whereby when the device is folded as indicated in Fig. 2, the opening formed by cutting away the free edge of the side 3 of the envelop as indicated at 15, will be completely covered and sealed. The envelop formed is adapted to receive tickets or any other desired material and the sections 8, 9 and 10 and also the sides of the envelop, if desired, may have printed or impressed thereon in any desired manner, any suitable data or advertising material. When it is desired to use the device for mailing purposes the same is folded so that the end of the folded sections 8, 9 and 10 of the tab may be inserted in the apertures 6 as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 3, and since the aperture or slot 6 may be located at any desired point on the side 3, it will be apparent that if the device is once sealed there is no liability of the same becoming accidentally unfolded.

In the embodiments seen in Figs. 4 and 5, I have devised a construction wherein the only difference between the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is that on the sections 8 and 9 I provide a lateral extension or looking portion 16 which is preferably on each section 8 and 9 so that when the latter is folded a double thickness will be formed which is adapted to interlock in the aperture 6 and extend beyond the end of said aperture, as seen in Fig. 5, thereby preventin the accidental unfolding of the device. gince the other portions of the device are similar to those shown in Figs. 1 and 2, I have indicated the same by the same reference characters.

that instead of providing a single slot with which the folded portion of the tab of the envelop is, adapted to engage, I provide a plurality of slots preferably angularly inclined to the longitudinal axis of the device, whereby the edges of the folded tab may In the embodiment seen in Figs. 6 and 7, the envelop is given the same general contour as that seen in Figs. 1 and 2, exceptthat instead of employing a single slot 6 I employ one or more slots 17 which are angularly inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the device, in order that when the tab sections are folded over the ends thereof may interlock with said apertures or slots 17 as will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 7, it being apparent that the location of these slots or apertures as well as their size may vary as desired.

In the embodiment seen in Figs. 8 and 9 instead of providing apertures or slots as seen in the other figures of the drawing, I make in the inner side of the envelop a circular or other shaped slot 18 thereby forming a tab 19 so that when the tab sections of the envelop are folded, the tab 19 will extend thereover in order to lock the sections of the tab in their assembled position with respect to the envelop and positively prevent the unfolding of the device during transit.

In the embodiment seen in Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9, the extension 14 is shown as of slightly different contour from that seen in the other figures of the drawings.

In the embodiment seen in Figs. 10 and 11, I have shown another embodiment of my invention, wherein I employ one or more apertures or slots 17 which are preferably angularly inclined to the longitudinal axis of the device, the slots corresponding to those shown in Figs. 6 and 7. In this embodiment in order to positively lock the sectional tab when folded in assembled posi tion, I provide the lateral extensions 20 which are carried by the sections 8 and 9 of the tab so that when the device is folded, a double thickness will be formed which will extend beyond the outer end of the aperture 17 when the same has been inserted therethrough, as will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 11, so that there is no liability of the device becoming accidentally unfolded.

It will now be apparent that in all the embodiments of my invention herein set forth, I disclose a device which is especially adapted for mail order business, since an envelop is provided within which may be retained any desired mailable material and wherein novel means are provided for interlocking the tab after it has been folded with respect to the envelop, and thereby insuring the safe delivery of the material contained within the envelop and at the same time a predetermined space for advertising matter is provided, the advantages of which are evident.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined envelop and advertising device, consisting of a blank of material separated into a plurality of envelop and tab sections, one of the end sections being secured to the adjoining section along its marginal edges, whereby an envelop is formed, the inner side of said envelop having one or more apertures therein, and one of the tab sections being provided with lateral extensions adapted to interlock with such aperture or apertures when the tab sections are folded in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the blank.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a combined envelop and advertising device, consisting of a blank of material separated into a plurality of sections by weakening the paper to form a plurality of envelop sections, and a plurality of tab sections of less width than the envelop sections, one of the envelop sections being of less length than the adjoining section and secured to such adjoining section along its marginal edges, whereby an envelop is formed having one side of less width than the other, the side of less width having one or more apertures therein, and all of said tab sections being folded in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the blank and interlocking with said apertures to prevent the accidental unfolding of such tab sections.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a com-- bined envelop and advertising device, con sisting of a blank of material separated into a plurality of envelop and tab sections by weakening the paper, one of the end sections being of less length than the adjoining section and secured to such adjoining section along its marginal edges whereby an envelop is formed having one side of less width than the other, and such side being provided with an aperture therein with which the tab sections interlock when folded in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the blank.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a combined envelop and advertising device, consisting of a blank of material separated into a plurality of envelop and tab sections, one of the envelop sections being of less length than the adjoining section, the latter being provided with side flaps secured to such adjoining section along its marginal edges, whereby an envelop is formed, the inner section of such envelop having one or more slots therein and the tab sections having an extension thereon on opposite sides thereof adapted to interlock with such apertures when the tab sections are folded in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the blank.
