To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, W'ALTER SzoznRnA, a citizen of Poland, residin'gat Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to envelopes, and has for its principal object the formation of an envelope blank, so constructed for readily permitting the user of the envelope blank to assemble the same whereby a simple .and efficient envelope is formed.

A further object of this invention is the formation of an envelope blank being provided with interlocking side and end portions, whereby these side and end portions may be readily engaged with each other for absolutely preventing the opening of the envelope without. informing the receiver of such opening or other tampering.

A still further object of this invention is the provision of an envelope wherein the same may be increased in length to receive papers or other mailing matter of a length greater than that of the normal length of the envelope.

With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same con-. sists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Referring more in particular to the several views, I have shown an envelope blank comprising a central rectangular section 1 provided with an integral top and bottom flap 2 and 3 of the usual design, The opposite ends of the section 1 are also provided 192?. Serial N03582A76.

with flaps 4 and 5, and the top and bottom and end flapsare creased at their edges a djac'ent the central section 1 as shown in F igures 1, 2 and 3 whereby the four flaps may be folded inwardly upon themselves so as to lie adjacent the inner faceof the rectangular section 1. The outer edges of the flaps 2 and 3 are provided with a suitable adhesive 6 such as glue or the like and the upper flap 2 is provided with a central inwardly projecting slit 7 for providing the section 2 with a small tongue 8 when the same is creased or bent upon the line X-X as shown in Figures 1., 2 and 3.. The bottom flap 3 is also slit as at 9 for forming a small tongue 10 upon the flap 3 when the same is bent or creased upon the lines YY. The longitudinal axis ofthe slit 9 in the flap 3 is oblique to the longitudinal axis of the slit 7 in the flap 2, whereby when the upper and lower flaps are joined together as shown in Figure 1, the inner edge of the flap 8 will overlie the adjacent inner edge of the flap 1 0 for purposes readily apparent. v

As previously noted, the rectangular section 1 is provided with end flaps 4: and 5, and each of these flaps are provided with a relatively short projecting tongue 11. These tongues 11 are upon opposite sides of the flaps 4 and 5, and each flap is provided with an inwardly'projecting slit. The flaps 4: and 5 may be readily interlocked as shown in Figure 2 and for allowing each opposite tongue 11 to underlie the adjacent end flap of the section 1, these tongues 11 may be secured to the under surface of the adjacent end flaps by applying to the said surface of these flaps an adhesive 13.

In the preferred embodiment of my in vention, the envelopes are sold to the public in the blank form shown in Figure l with the top and bottom and end flaps unfolded. From the above description it will be readily seen that anyone desiring to use my type of envelope will first fold the end flaps land 5 inwardly upon the inner face of the rectangular strip 1 and by inserting the tongues 11 beneath the edges of each adjacent flap the end members are securely held together and especially when the adhesive 13 is moistened for rigidly joining these project ing tongues beneath each opposite flap 4 and 5.
