Y W. B. EIGHHOLTZ;
GAR SEAL. I APPLICATION FILED DBO.21,1908, 935,898. Patented 0011.5,1909.
TN a 7 witnesses WILLIAM B. EICHHOLTZ, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
GAR-SEAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
Application filed December 21, 1908. Serial No. 468,522.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. EIGH- HOLTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Seals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a seal for car doors, and the object of the invention is the securing of the ends of a metal shackle in such a manner that they cannot be separated without breaking the shackle, thus showing that the seal has been tampered with.
The invention consists essentially in a casing of a novel construction designed to receive and hold the ends of the shackle.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 .is a vertical elevation showing the device in use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the casing. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on the line H of Fig. 2.
In these drawings 1 represents a shackle and 2 a cylindrical casing within which the ends of the shackle are to be secured. One end of the casing is provided with an entrance slot 3 and the opposite end is pressed inwardly as shown at 4 thus forming an end presenting upon the interior faces 5 and 6 arranged at an angle to each other, the face 6 being of slightly greater length than the face 5. The casing 2 is formed in two sections which are firmly secured together after certain interior partitions have been secured in place. One of these partitions 7 is ar ranged adjacent the inwardly pressed end 4 and extends obliquely across the casing, said partition being parallel to the face 6. A tongue 8 is punched out of this partition and is bent into a position substantially parallel to the face 5. Fitting within the casing in advance of said partition is an obliquely cut sleeve 9 the cut end of which bears against the partition 8 and aids in holding it in position, and acts also as a brace. The other end of this sleeve forms a second partition 10 from which is also punched a tongue 11, said tongue extending into the sleeve. The end portions of the shackle 2 are provided with suitable slots 12, two slots being formed adjacent each end of the ribbon, and one of these end portions carries a tongue 13.
After the shackle has been passed through the staple, eye, or other device to be sealed, the shackle ends are passed through the slot 3, through the partition 10, sliding above the point of the tongue 11 and through the partition 7 riding up upon the tongue 8 until the slots adjacent the shackle ends engage said tongue. \Vhen the shackle is then drawn outwardly the inclined face 5 against which the shackle ends bear forces the same downwardly and the shackle slips over the tongue 8 into the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position the shackle ends bear against the inclined face 6, and any further attempt to pull the shackle out will only result in bending the tongue 8 toward the partition 7, thus more effectually shielding the opening in said partition formed by cutting out said tongue and through which the shackle had entered. The movement of the shackle over the tongue 8 will cause the other slots in the shackle to engage the tongue 11, which tongue will be brought into engagement with the tongue 13 carried by the shackle, and this tongue will also be forced at an an gle to the shackle, so that the shackle is doubly locked against withdrawal from the casing. It is of course necessary to cut the shackle in order to open the car door, as the shackle ends cannot be withdrawn from the casing.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A car seal comprising a casing having a slot at one end, and having the other end pressed inwardly, forming two end faces at an angle to each other, an obliquely arranged partition in said casing, said partition being parallel to one of said faces, and having a tongue punched therefrom and extending substantially parallel to the other face, and a shackle bent upon itself and having alining slots adapted to engage said tongue, the ends of the shackle engaging one of the said end faces, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a casing slotted at one end and reentrant at the opposite end, thereby presenting at said latter end faces at an angle to each other, one of said faces being of greater length than the other, an obliquely arranged partition mounted within the casing and parallel to the larger face, said partition having a tongue punched therefrom, said tongue extending toward the other face, a shackle adapted to be folded upon itself and slotted adjacent each end, said shackle passing through the casing slot, through the par tition, and riding upon said tongue until said tongue engages the slots, of the shackle,
the smaller face engaging the ends of the shackle and guiding the same into position upon the tongue, and the larger face engaging the ends of the shackle When thesan e is inlocked position.
3. A car seal coinpris-ing-a-oasing having a slot at one end, a transversely arranged 10 -19@lfl}ltl0 l1 Within said-casing having an iniavardly -exten ding tongue punched there- -f-roln, an obliquely arranged part t on in ,said casing, said partition having aE tongue vpun d-u ere rom, bot o gue extending 15 {in approximately the same direction and a shack h ving qt e en ath sai slo .weaeing aid, ongues whe t e hack li i locked position.
A. A car door seal comprising afiasing tongue extending inwardly, a shackle pro-- having a slot at one end, an obliquely arranged partition in sa d. casing, said partitionhavlng a tongue punched therefrom, a
sleeve having an obliquely cut end, said sleeve fitting Within said casing and the cut end bearing upon the oblique partition,:the opposite end of the sleeve forming a second partition havingaztongue out therein, said WILLIAMBEIOH Wi esse J-iDEL BD, ;E. J. :TI-IlLBORGER.
