ANDREW NIOOLL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
GIRTH FOR HARNESS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW NIooLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Girths for Harness; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac-' companying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in harness; and, the invention ias reference, more particularly, to a novel form and construction of girth for use with the saddle of the harness, the girth being constructed with a view of preventing the chafing or galling of the horse at those points where the front legs of a horse join into the foreshoulders, or what are sometimes termed the arms of the horse.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a simple and novel construction of girth which is of especial benefit in its use as a part of the harness for fast running horses or colts having a large motion or throwing of the legs, thus causing the f0re-legs of the horse to be constantly brought in rubbing contact with the girth, as ordinarily made, and thus very often resulting in producing a sore or chafed condition of the arm-portions of the legs, especially during hot weather.
Other objects of this invention will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of my present, invention.
ith the objects of my present invention in view, thesame consists, primarily, in the novel girth for harness hereinafter set forth and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the various novel arrangements and combinations ofparts, all of which will be more fully described in the following detailed description of the invention and then finall embodied in the clauses of the claims whic Specification of Letters Patent.

are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are the two face views of a girth embodying the principles of my present invention; Fig. 2 showing one of the strc s for attaching the girth to a harness-sadc le broken away. Fig. 3 is an end-elevation of the various parts represented in said Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side view of the girth, said View being made on an enlarged scale, showing por-' tions of the girth-straps. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section, said section being represented as taken on line 5-5 in said Fig. 2, but said section being made on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 6 is a detail horizontal sectional representation of the one endportion of the girth, said section being represented as taken on line 66 in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and said section being made 011 an enlarged scale.
. Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character A indi cates the girth embodying the principles of the present invention, the same comprising an inner reinforcing or stiffening member or element 1, usually made of metal, but any other suitable material may be used, as will be clearly evident. This member or element 1, as clearly indicated in the dotted outline in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, is made of the peculiar sinusoidal configuration shown, so as to provide a member having the main centrally disposed marginal edge-portions 2 and 3, the concave marginal edgeportion 4, and the convex marginal edgeportions 5 located upon opposite sides of the edge-portions 2 and 3 and directly back of a plane passing through the marginal edgeportion 3 and at right angles to the plane of either face-portion of the member or element 1 located between said marginal edge-portions 2 and 3, substantially as illustrated. The said element or member 1 terminates der side of the body of a horse, is suitably incased in a casing made of leather, or other suitably soft and iiexible material, which conl r l l l l l l sists essentially of an outer facing 8, and an i inner facing 10 adapted to be placed against the body of the horse. The inner facing 10 has its marginal edge-portions 11. doubled over upon themselves, so that said doubled-over edge-portions will abut against the marginal edge-portions of the said reinforcing or stif'fening member or element 1, and the marginal edge-portions 12 of the outer facing 8 resting directly upon the doubled-over edge-portions 11 of the inner facing, as clearly illus trated in said Fig. 5 of the drawings, the said facings being permanently secured together by means of the stitching 13 sewed through the said registering marginal edge-portions. The inner facing 10 is arranged upon the said reinforcing or stiffening member or element 1 in such a manner, as to provide a suitably chambered space between the NUTS, which is stuffed with a suitable padding, as 14.
Suitably secured upon the respective endportions of the girth, thus produced. are buckles 15 for suitable attachment of the girth to the usual straps of the saddle. A flexible pad or member 1.6 may also be attached to the outer face of the inner facing 10, as shown, and acts as a cushion or pad which rests against the under portion of the body of the horse to prevent chafing, as will be clearly evident.
The reference-character 17 indicates a suitable girthstrap or runner which is loosely arranged and held in place by loops 18 attached to the outer face 9 at the points indicated more particularly in Figs. 2 and l of the drawings, the said strap or runner 18 having secured to its respective end-portions suitable strap-members 19 and buckles 20, to which may be attached in the usual manner the free end-portions of said straps which are provided with the buckle-tongue receiving holes or perforations 21.
From an inspection of Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, it will be seen, that I have provided a harness-girth of a concave-convex configuration, when viewed from the side, so as to conform to the curvature of the body of the animal, and when viewed from the top or bottom, the girth being of a sinusoidal configuration, comprising a forwardly extending and centrally disposed portion, with two concave portions in which the upper portions or arms of the front legs of the horse can freely move, while running, without any possibility of any parts of the legs being brought iin rubbing contact with the edges of the girth, so that all danger of chafing or galling is clearly overcome; and, a girth is the result, which when placed upon the horse is of the greatest comfort to the animal, while running, and also allows of the free use of the legs in throwing or moving them back and forth, as will be clearly evident.
