SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,003, dated August 24, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, GEORGE WV. FRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uxbridge, in the county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Interfering-Pads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figu res of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates especially to improvements in interfering pads or boots for horses or other animals, said invention being an improvement upon United States Patent N 0. 94,098, issued to me under date of August 24, 1869. Y

My present invention consists, essentially, of an attachingstrap provided with a stop, in connection with an elastic band secured to said strap, and means for retaining the pad or boot in position when in use.

The object of my invention is to provide an interfering pad with means whereby the tension of the strap or elastic band is adapted to be adjusted so as to permit a free movcmentof the animals limb, and at the same time prevent undue pressure upon said limb by reason of the attached pad.

For the purpose of illustrating the invention hereinafter claimed, I have prepared the accom muying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the pad complete,a portion of the band thereof being broken away to showthe elastic connection. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same viewed from the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a plan view in its normal position, and Fig. 4 represents a partial plan view showing the elastic strap elongated The following is a more detailed description of the invention, including the manner of its operation.

A, again referring to the drawings, designates my improved interfering pad or boot as a whole, the same consisting of the strap or band B and the guard or pad G. The said strap portion is providedon one side with a loop, 0, and metallic hook a. The other or opposite side, i of the strap ismade hollow, for the purpose of receiving the short elastic band E, which is secured therein, as shown in 5 Fig. 1. The outer end of the elastic band is secured to a leather strip, 1), provided with a series of holes adapted to engage the hook a. An abutment or stop, 71, constituting an important feature of this invention, is formed at the junction of the strap b with the band E, I) being an overlapping protector for the elastic band, the same forming a part of the strap 1), as indicated in Fig. 4. C designates the pad portion of the device, the same being secured to the band B adjacent to the elastic strip E. The leather or material forming the portion 0 is padded or thickened in the direction of its length, as indicated at c." This feature of padding or upholstering the fender or guard O is very valuable, as it forms a cushion over the joint or sore to be protected. A portion of the leather or stock is molded or shaped so as to produce araised surface, as at e, Fig. 1, said surface being practically flush with or a little higher than the outer face of thepadded portion e, before referred to.

Now, it being presumed that the office of an interfering boot as applied to an animals limb is well understood, the operation of my improvement would be substantially as follows: The band B is first placed around the animal s leg at the proper point above thejoint, swelling, or sore to be protected, as the case may be. The leather strap 1) is then hooked over the hook a, the band being under sufficient tension to retain it in place while the limb is in its normal position, the step 'i bearing lightly against the outer portion of the hollow end 2'' of the band B, as shown in Figs. l and 3. Now, as the animal moves the action of the muscles of the leg, say, causes the band to expand or elongate at each step, as in Fig. 4; but owing to the yielding nature of the inner band, E, an increase of pressure upon 5 the joint is prevented, thus conducing to the comfort and health of the animal. As the leg assumes its normal position, so correspondingly is the elastic band withdrawn into the band B until restrained by the stop i,the flap [O0 b at the same time preventing hair or other foreign matter from working into the band E and the chamber i therefor. When used to protect the inner projecting bone of the front knee-joints, the strap B (either right or left, as the circumstances require) is applied to the limb, so that the raised portion e of the pad will substantially cover said bone. Now, as the horse runs the other front leg will strike the padded portion 6' and glance therefrom without touching the joint-bone lying beneath the raised part 0 of the pad. By this means the joint is fully protected from being chafed or cut to the injury of the animal.

The hook furnishes a simple and ready fastening, its efficiency being equally advantageous in unfastening.

As hereinbefore stated, I do not claim, broadly, a pad adapted to protect an animals limbs; but

What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In an interfering-pad, the combination, with the hollow band B and elastic strap E, secured therein, of the extension-strap b, pro vided with the stop 0' and guard b, and means for securing the pad to an animals limb, substantially as shown and hereinbefore set forth.

2. In an interfering pad or boot for horses, the hollow attaching-band B, provided with the elastic strap E, extension-strap b, stop i, guard b, and means for ad'ust-ably securing the band to a horses limb, in combination with the padded protector O, substantially as shown and set forth.
