Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, .1 909.
Applioationflled September 10, 1908. Serial No. 462,465.
To (ill whom it wry concern..-
Be it known that we, bixnilint M. CURWEN and Waiunas ill. h m-r11, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, in llu orl'ord, t'etrnsylvaniu, and minutes, rennsylvania, have invented certain improvements in lusscr1ger;()ars, of which the following is a specification.
Our iint'niion relates to certain improrements in passenger cars of the type in which a door is provided at one or both sides of the platform and of the type in. which a movable step is used so that when the step is not in use it can he moved out of posit1on.
()nc object of our invention is to provide nit-ans for closing the space between thebottom of the door and the floor of the platform without cutting away the sills forming the fl;tlllt\\0ll{ oi' the car; and a further object of the in rention is to actuate this closing means on the movement of the step. These objects we attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l, is a transverse sectional view on the line l-l, Fig. 4, through a portion of the platform; the step .being lowered and the door being open; Fig. 2,,is a. view similar to Fig. 1, showing the step raised and the door closed; Fig. 3, is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig". 4; and Fig. 4, is a side view of a portion of the platform of a car; the stop being in the positionvillustrated in Fig, 1.
In the accompanying drawing, A is the body of the car and B is the platform. The floor 6 of the platform is some distance be-.
loiv the floor a of the car body and the transverse sill forming part of the framing of the car is directly under the floor a and consequently if the sill is cut away it weakens the car framing considerably and yet it is desirable in many cases to providea sliding door at the side of the platform so as to close the passageway, leaving the doorway 0 en between the platform and the body of t e car.
D is the sliding door for closing one side of the platform and this sliding door is adapted to a channel in the body of thecar, but. in order to obviate the necessity for cutting away the sill of the car, wc mount the door' so that it. will slide above the sill. lVhen this door, however, is closed there is a space left; between the bottom of the door and the tloor'of the platform and one object; of the present invention is to close this space.
this step is secured to a pivot shaft a mounted in brackets F fastened to theunderside of the framing of the platform and projectingfrom these brackets are fixed supports upon which the step rests when in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, so that. )assengers may enter or leave the car. he pivot shaft tn on. which the step is mounted has a bevel gear 0 which'meshes with the bevel wheel 5 on a vertical shaft G, ha ving at its upper end a pinion i which meshes with a rack (Z on the door This rack is so located and the mechanism is so timed that the step will not be raised tintil the door is partly closed and on the first movement to open the door the step is lowered, thus preventing the tripping of passengers endeav 'oring to-board or leave the car during the first movement of the.closing of the door.
Mounted on the underside of thcstcp near shaft; I carrying a su )plemental door I, and mechanism is provied so thpt the door swings under the step E when it is lowered and in the position illustrated in Fig. Land .when the step is raised, as shown in Fig. 2, the door I is turned on its pivot and rests either directly under or against the door D, closing the space between the main door D and the support of the latform. In the present instance we provi e a pinion 2' on the shaft I, which mshes with a rack par N pivoted at a to the bracket at a point; below the pivot e of the step. i
The parts are so proportioned that as the step is turned on its pivot from the position shown in Fig. 1 to-that shown in Fig. 2 the shaft; from the position under the step, as in Fig. 1, to the ing the space etween the main door D and the floor of the platform. Other means may be resorted to for confining the movement of this hinged supplemental door Without. departing from the main features of our in-- .vention. 1
step at. one side of the platform, it; will be understood that whendesired both sides of E is a step at the side of the platform and osition shown in Fig. 2, clos- While we have shown in the drawings the" the platform may be provided with this supplemental door I will be turned on its mechanism, but where the platform is closed on one side, then the above described mechanism is only necessary on the en side.
\Ve do not claim broadly in t iis application the supplemental door for closing the space between the main door and the bottom of the platform, nor do we claim broadly the two doors connected so that they wil work in unison so that the supplemental door will be actuated on by the movement of the main door, as this is fully set forth and claimed in an application for Patent filed by as of even date herewith.
\Ve claim z- 1. The combination in a passenger car in which the floor of the platform is below the end sill of the car body, of a sliding door mounted above the sill and arranged. to extend over the platform, a, movable step and a supplemental door, with means connecting the supplemental door and the step with the sliding door so that on the closing of the door the step will be raised and the space between the sliding door and the floor of the platform will be closed by the supplemental door.
2. The combination in a passenger car, in which the floor of the platform is below the floor of the body of the car, of a sliding door mounted above the sill of the car body and arranged to extend over the platform, with a movable step and a supplemental door carried by the step, with means connecting the step with the sliding door so that on the closing of the sliding door the step willbe raised and the supplemental door will be i moved into position, closing the space he l tween the main door and the floor of the 1 platform. l
8. The combination in a passen 1' car in which the floor of the platform is low the end sill of the car, of a sliding door mounted above the sill of the car body and arranged to extend over the platform, a pivoted step at one side of the latform, gearing between the step and the slidin door so that on the closing and opening 0' the sliding door the step will be raised and lowered, a supplemental door pivoted near the outer end of the step, and means for turning the supplemental door on its pivot as the step is raised and lowered so that when the step is raised and the sliding door closed the supplemental door will close the space between the sliding door and the floor of the platform.
4. The combination in a passenger car having a platform, the floor of the platform being below the upper surface of the end sill of the car, a. sliding door adapted to close one side of the platform and mounted above the sill, a step pivoted to bearings at one side of the platform, a pivot shaft mounted on the step near its outer end, a supplemental door carried by said pivot shaft, a
pinion on said shaft, and a rack engaging said pinion and pivoted at a fixed point at some distance from the pivot of the step so that as the step is raised a rotary motion will be imparted to the supplemental door.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
