' UNITED STATES PA ENT OFFICE.
ROBERT S. RAMSEY, BELLEV'UE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T PRESSED STEEL f CAR COIMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, CORIPQBA'IIQN OF NEH? JERSEY.
DOOR MECHANISM.
Application filed November 29, 1922. Serial No. 604,000.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT S. RAMsEY, citizen of the United States, residing in Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dump cars, and more particularly to that type of dump car having horizontally disposed doors and has for an. object the provision of means for supporting and locking such doors inclosed or partly closed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide the discharge doors of a railway dump car with a plurality of supporting ledges. adapted to be engaged by members attached to the car body, whereby said doors may be supported in closed or partly closed positions. I
These and other objects will be apparent from the following description.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a portion of a railway dump car, embodying the invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken ori the line 2--2 of'Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 1 indicates the car body, which may be of any desired type or construction, but which, for illustrative purposes, comprises a side wall 2, center sills 3 and drop doors 4, such doors being preferably hinged at one edge, to the center sill 3 and having their opposite or free edges adjacent the car sides. Each of these doors is provided with spaced strengthening members 5, which are preferably of angular form, having horizontally disposed flanges 6 secured to the underside of the door and vertically disposed flanges 7 depending therefrom. These members preferably extend beyond the free edge of the door and adjacent their outer ends are provided with members 8 with which door supporting members 9, pivotally mounted on the side walls, are adapted to engage. Each of these members 8 is preferably secured to the horizontally disposed flange 6 of one of the members 5 and below such flange is provided with a ledge 10 with which the sup porting ledge 11, formed on the member 9,
engages to support the door in closed position. It will here be noted that the flange 6 forms one of the supporting ledges but it will be understood that the member 8 may be provided in itself, with a plurality of supporting ledges.
The members 9 adjacent their upper ends are pivotally connected with'bracket members 13 which are preferably secured to the side walls 2. Each. of these bracket members is provided with a back portion ltwhich is secured-to the side wall 2 and is also provided with a front portion 15 which is spaced away from the back portion and connected therewith by transverse portions 16 which together with the parts 14 and 15 form an opening 17 through which the upper portion of one of-the members 9 extends, such portion being pivotally connected between and with the parts 1 1 and 15. The members 9 opposite their pivot points are provided with weighted portions 18 which are adapted to cause the lower portion of the members to move by gravity, to such positions that the supporting ledges 11 thereon will engage the supporting ledges on the door when the door is being closed. When each member 9 isin its door supporting position the underside of the weighted portion 18 engages one of the portions 16 of the bracket member and when in such engagement assists the pivoting means in supporting the door and any lading carried thereon. When the doors are in open position, the engagement of the portion 16 by the weighted portion 18 of the member 9 will prevent the lower portion of the member 9 from moving to an inoperative position. The lower surface 19 of each member 9 is so formed that when the door is being closed the engagement of the top surface of the flange 6 on the ledge 10 with the surface 19 will cause the lower portion of the member tomove outwardly a suflicient distance to permit the ledges 6 and 10 to pass the member.
To look the members 9 in door supporting positions, gravity dogs 20 are provided which are pivotally mounted on the bracket members 13 above the members 9. The lower portion of each of these dogs when in looking position extends between the arts 14 and 15 of the bracket member an the lower camsha'ped surface of the dog engages the upper surface of one" of the members 9. When the dogjisin locking'position as just described the parts let and 15 of the bracket V 5 member will prevent undue sidewise movedisengagement .of the dog. 7
Assuming the door to be in open position and it is desired to close'it, the operator, by 10 the use of any suitable expedient, raises the door to closed position, or to partly closed position. As the door is raised, the upper 7 surface off-the flanges 6 of the members 5 'f first engage the lower surfaces 19 of the .15 members-9, andthe continued movement of the door causes the members 9 to move out of the pathsofthe flanges 6 until such flanges have been moved above the ledges 11 ofthe" members9 which time the lower 20 portions of themembe'rs 9 will move, by gravity, to suchpo'sitions that the ledge 11 willbe'in supporting position beneath the flangefti; the operator may now stop raisment of the dog and thus prevent accidental V F ingthe' door'a'nd let thebottom surface of the flange Gengagethe supporting ledge 11 thus supporting the door inpartly closed positionasshown in'dotan'd dash'lines in it is diflicult to 'move the door from open posi'tion'to final closed position,
7 the supporting of the door in'partly closed position affor'ds the operator an opportunity to change his position before starting the final'doon closing moveme'nt. The door is again movedfupwardly until the upper surfaces ofthe" ledges 1O engage the surfaces 19 of the members 9 and'the continued upward movementof the door'causes the memhere 9 to be-again moved out ofthe plane oftheledges 10 until such time as the door has reachedits final closed position, at which time-"the lower portionsof the members 9 move automatically to such' positions'that the ledges 11 'of the members '9 engage the lower surface of the ledge 10 and thus'sup port the door in final closed position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l and in full lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing. To hold the members 9 in their door supporting positions the operator moves the dogs 20 from their inoperative positions as shown in dot and'dash lines in Fig. 1, to their operative positions in engagement with the members 9 as shown full lines in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the foregoing, the invention has been described in connection with one door, but it will be understood that the invention can be used in connection with any number of doors,
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains that many changes may be made in the details and arrangement of thcseveral parts forming the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims. Iaving thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
-1. In a dump car, a discharge door. a bracket secured to said car, a member pivotally' mounted in said bracket and adapted to support said door in closed position, and an extension on said member adapted to engage said bracket when said member is in door supporting position.
2. Ina dump car, a discharge door, a
bracket secured to said car having spaced front and rear portions, a member pivotally mounted between said portions, adapted to support said door, an extension on said member, adapted to engage said bracket between said portions, and a locking member adapted to engage said extension.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
